Music and art direction (colors and sky boxes). The remake completely butchered the art direction which is why most people still prefer the PS1 version.
>>
The first Spyro has a "fantasy painting" aesthetic where it doesn't really "work" in a logical sense but it also isn't really meant to.
It's whimsical.
>>
>>739291957
This faggot made this image and was waiting so long to post it only so people could point at him and laugh for circling the word "official" on a magazine authored by a small independent team and published by another third party (Ziff Davis) which was amongst the first to use the PSX abbreviation anyway.

>nostalgia
True, but not in the way you're probably using it. The really great parts of Spyro 1's levels and style is that they feel nostalgic even if you're experiencing it for the first time.
>>
>>739289684

Cartoon games don't need realistic lighting like modern cartoon games.
>>
>>739289684
I don't know. I had this game as a kid but I preferred Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. On my PS1, I preferred playing Parasite Eve 1 and 2, Vagrant Story, and Resident Evil 3. I think Spyro is pretty overrated and isn't really that great of a 3D platformer at all, honestly.
>>
>>739296614
This game cleared every 3D platformer out at the time, you were just a dumb brand loyal kid but that's fine it was probably not your fault
>>
>>739296747
I dunno man, I really gave it a good shot but it was exceptionally average with nothing really special going for it for me. I was the right age to enjoy it, around 10 or 11 years old. It just never clicked for me. I think the level design was very bland. I will say that the item pickups had really nice graphics though, and it's far from the worst 3D platformer I ever played on the PS1. That honor goes to Jersey Devil. God, what a piece of shit that was. It was also better than Croc, for whatever that's worth.
>>
>>739296921
Like I said kids do dumb kids like insisting on McDonalds even if they have a healthy home cooked meal available, your brand blindness as a kid wasn't your fault as long as you worked to correct it later on

What "brand blindness"? I just listed
>a Nintendo game
>a Rare game
>3 Squeenix games
>and a Capcom game
I also hate modern Squeenix games and haven't played any in decades. So because I don't masturbate Spyro, I'm "brand blind"? Are you okay, dude? Are you gonna cry? Are you gonna piss your pants?
>>
>>739297087
Yeah, I also played Goldeneye at 9 and Code: Veronica at 11 or 12. What of it? Gonna try and tell me I'm lying about my childhood gaming experiences?

>nostalgia
explain how was nostalgia a factor when it being special was something that people felt about it even back then
hell, even when spyro 2 released only 1 year later, people were already saying that despite being good, it lacked that "je ne sais quoi" of the first game
>>

>>
>>739298524
no, only dumb zoomers call shit they never experienced nostalgic
>>
No upgrades, so when you saw an item you couldn't get you knew it was because you just hadn't figured out how to get there with the mechanics already at your disposal, encouraging players to really stink their teeth into the movement. The next two games got rid of this and added a ton of fat with shitty minigames and unnecessary extra playable characters
>>
>>739298568
I didn't say it was nostalgic, I said that it gives as nostalgic feeling whenever you play it. "It makes me think of being a kid" is not the same thing as "it makes me think of when I was a kid"
>>
>>739289684
(you) played it as a child and it was as close as you could get to mario64
>>
>>739298881
"Ugh. Nostalgia why that thing you liked is actually shit. No, Nintendo games were actually even better than you remember and are actually amazing always and forever."
>>
>>739297121
no point arguing with mentally unwell gay furrys, anon. for what it's worth, i completely agree with you. nice looking but overrated as fuck. i wasnt even a n64 kid growing up but even i know mario 64 and banjo were much better platformers. spyro's not even the best platformer on the ps1, that honor goes to crash (and then gex)
>>
>>739299260
I also happen to think Crash wasn't that good. As for which was better? Eh, I guess I enjoyed Crash 3 Warped more than I enjoyed Spyro, but not by much. I felt Crash was too difficult, and didn't enjoy the collectathon it offered as much as I did with Banjo and SM64.
>>
The biggest mistake PS platformers committed was not being on a Nintendo console.

More like they simply stopped existing altogether. GTA 3/Vice City came out on the PS2 and Sony immediately stopped caring about having mascot platformers. Sony's soul died with GTA on the PS2.

>Best graphics on the PS1

It’s not the only one
>>
>>739299637
Nah, because then people would be saying "why did they stop making these games when they were so good."

In order to be consistent your argument should be that they were CORRECT to stop making them and switch to something else, because the games were bad and nothing was lost.

Why would Sony, ND, Insomniac, etc. be still making games that, this thread informs us, are only slightly above Bubsy 3D, instead of changing to something else?
>>
>>739299678
That looks like absolute ass. Vagrant Story is probably the best graphics on the PS1.
>>739299719
I don't think they were right to stop making them. I think they were wrong to stop trying.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>739299792
>I don't think they were right to stop making them.
Nah, of course they should have stopped. How many times can you keep making the worst shovelware you've ever played, no better than trash like Jersey Devil before you just cut your losses.

In fact, much like with trash like Jersey Devil it'd be better if they never made them at all.

It doesn't matter though, because now their only memory, only legacy, is how bad they were. How utterly trash they were compared to Mario and Banjo. Can't defeat the kings, so it'd be best if we just pretend they never existed, just like countless other games.

Not being on a Nintendo console was the greatest blessing any 90's kid could ask for. The efforts people went through to make games like Crash and Spyro vastly triumph on a technical and thematic level, any Nintendo game on the 64.

>>
>>739289684
I'm not saying the gameplay was bad, but Spyro was a standout due to the great art direction and sound track. It also helps that Spyro is fun to move around and the characters in 2 and 3 (because there really aren't characters in 1) are funny and memorable. A lot of the heavy lifting that makes Spyro stand out compared to the other games from that time is the sound track and art direction

What's going on here?
The PS1 games had a team that understood the hardware and adjusted their games to it. Same with Crash and Naughty Dog.

one was revolutionary, one wasn't. objective fact.

The worlds are what make Spyro special. Also the music. The gameplay is kinda eh, but is heavily made up for by the worlds and music.

Then you'd do well to know there were also reams of "unofficial" mags, including "PSX" magazine.

Why not compare like for like? You are using a small Bowser course for what purpose?
Why not compare the big open areas to big open areas?
>>
>>739316731
Okay, post the Spyro stages that look like random assets just thrown on the screen and we'll compare them like for like.
>>

lack of an n64
>>

It's simple and the graphics don't insist upon themselves.
>>
>>739316854
It's an obstacle course made by Bowser.
That's exactly what it's supposed to be.
But you are a retarded fanboy and there is no reason in your demented little brain.
>>
>>739317480
You're right. Sorry. Here's a load of grey walls and grey floors and a floating pendulum for no reason.

But I wont be unfair, I'll let you post the obscure Spyro stage that looks like a load of assets thrown together.
>>
Sound and visuals had a fun but dream like quality, gameplay was fun and novel for the time, humour was just right and it got a lot right for it's genre.
>>
>>739289684
you were young
>>
Are we seriously at the point now where Nintendo fans wont even accept that a game can even LOOK better than a Nintendo game?
>>

>>
>>739318057
>Spyro stage that looks like a load of assets thrown together.
Once again, you're being a shitter, the games were made with different intents in mind and use that to justify bullshit comparisons because you are an autistic demented fanboy that can't simply talk about a game they like they have to feel a sense of superiority based on they toys they play.
>>
>>739298514
Nah
I played a bunch of shovelware when I was a kid and I genuinely forgot about some of it until I saw it in a YouTube video or on the shelf of a used game store
Meanwhile games like Spyro actually stuck with me and many others
It's true that we tend to overrate games we're nostalgic for, but to say there's nothing about the game itself that makes it memorable and special is just wrong

It's mostly the music. Still the best ost for a video game ever made. Gameplay is tight too.
