Does anyone else like playing complex games with open guides on yt or wikis for efficient learning? I know the best is to learn from your own mistakes but it's much more time efficient to watch someone who knows the game play it. Be honest, it's not cheating because games like Factorio, any Paradox game or spreadsheet simulators are quite vague at times. Also i'm not talking about copying exactly what someone else is doing but learning WHY they're doing it.

If it's a single player game, no, unless i got stuck or if it's some autism simulator
If it's a casual multiplayer game, usually no, but cheese strats are indeed funny sometimes
If it's a """competitive""" multiplayer game, yes, because it's unplayable otherwise, but goofing around with retards at the rock low ELO is pretty fun

god no, stop right there, turn around, end yourself
games are supposed to be fun, fuck your "cheevos" fuck your guides fuck your mom she is pretty hot
>>

i'm mainly talking about factory games, gsg, economy/politics etc. I should've included that on my post, also i'm not talking at all about competitive multiplayer games, these are cancer anyways.
>>
>>739291327
These are autist simulators so yes

Define complex game
>>
>>739290910
I try to avoid it but if I've beaten the game before on my own I'll look up ratios or ideas for optimization. My spaghetti bullshit has launched rockets in Factorio so there's no harm in seeing how the pros do it and taking some pointers. Real Engineers get an education to be as good as they are, so it's the same thing really.

I've played with the wiki open in the past but I try not to in general.
With some games it's impossible though. Like I don't think Minecraft ever tells you how to build the things ? So there are items you won't find out about cause you don't know in which pattern you should put what material.

I guess some games back in the days would require you to play with the manual so it's not that different.

see this, >>739291353
it's a broad category

There are genres like souls, fps, action and other reflex based games that could be played without looking at a tutorial

>>739291437
yes exactly my point
>>
>>739291528
>FPS
>Can be played without looking at tutorials
Ehh...well they're on the easier side to figure out on your own
>>

>There are genres like souls, fps, action and other reflex based games that could be played without looking at a tutorial
I was specifically talking about engineering games, I don't use guides for other shit.
>>
>>739291580
Yeah same, and your first city builder/colony sim games are ok to be played with a guide. After you've played one or two, they work in very similar ways.
>>

>>739291580
At the end of the day I guess you should maximize the enjoyment you get out of a hobbie.
For example I don't enjoy challenge that much so I usually don't play on hard/very hard.
If you've played without a guide and didn't enjoy the game more, and if you don't mind losing that feeling of discovery, I'd say don't stop yourself, really.

Lately my interest has been shifted in more "systemic" games, that require planning and thinking rather than reflex based games like CS2, Overwatch and almost all games of this kind.
>>
>>739291814
Yeah man, it's definitely cyclical.
It flows like this, you'll crave fast paced shit, scratch that itch, go to slower paced games or different styles, different points of views, and soon you'll get that Overwatch itch again and go back for a while, it keeps shit fresh and it renews it.

I do something different personally, I always play two games at the same time. Right now I play Pokémon Leaf Green in the morning while drinking coffees and hanging out, then during the evening I boot up Warcraft III.

>>739291917
Personally, i think my optimal strategy is to focus on one "heavy" game like EU4 with all DLCs and have a couple "lighter" games like Manor Lords and a VN and rotate these, tackling backlog+learning new shit scratches my 'tism itch

I'm unreasonably paranoid about missing out on cool shit.
I just started playing Fire Emblem 6 for the first time a few days ago. Literally three chapters in I stopped myself and opened a guide because I had prior knowledge of a "best ending" and was afraid I might miss out on it.
I wish I could not care about shit like that but I can't control myself.
>>
>>739291528
FPS is 90% angles and positioning not reflexes
>>
>>739292221
The endings in FE6 are short and getting the best ending is kind of irrelevant. However, the older FE games love to hide random bullshit in the game that's difficult to find without a guide, including missable characters with obscure recruitment conditions, so I don't think it's wrong to play them with the wiki open. I think the fault is ultimately with the design of games like that, it's better when the player can trust that they won't miss out while playing blind.
>>
>>739290910
only if i am completely lost in them like zelda
>>
>>739290910
Yes, I do that for strategy games like Paradox games and Total War.

I some times do that for old RPGs and CRPGs but try not to. Like, I'll look up a quest after I finish it to see if there was another route I missed.

>the older FE games love to hide random bullshit in the game that's difficult to find without a guide, including missable characters with obscure recruitment conditions
That is precisely why I stopped playing Shining Force. By playing the first fight normally, you have already missed a recruitable character.

> I do that for strategy games like Paradox games and Total War

Well, exactly the same with what i am doing with Paradox games and i learn a shit ton of things, i would even go as far as to say that learning to play is more enjoyable than playing. As for total war, i don't know because i only have Total War 2 Rome and haven't played much.
>>
>>739290910
You didn't beat the game
>>
>>739290910
You did not beat the game.
