How were 90s kids supposed to know this?
>>
>hmm im not making a lot of progress... how can I get around this?
>let me ask my friends in school
>got no friends? I'll just buy a strategy guide at the game store.
>no money? hmm guess I got no choice but to press A on every tiny thing until something happens
this is how 90s kids solved problems. They asked for help, bought strategy guides, or poked and prodded at the problem until the solution presented itself.

Exploring and talking to people.
>>
>>739605676
By touching myself at night.
>>
It's optional.
>>
As an ESL playing pokemon I was stuck on Sapphire because of Surf. You had to talk to this random nigga in a house to get it, in Emerald they automatized it where you automatically get guided to the npc.
The rest of the games like RBY and GSC I figured out on my own through exploration.
>>
Japanese and American kids were simply more intelligent than you.
>>
>>739605927
This, true RPG fans like to talk to people (in game not real life)
>>
>>739605676
I got this when I was 6 and could not even read English
>>
>>739605676
As a 7-8 year old kid playing Pokemon Red, I remember having trouble getting passed the guards because I didn't know what I had to give them. As an older kid, I remember it taking me a while to find the machine parts in Misty's gym in Silver.
>>
Most of my friends just groped their way through Rock Tunnel without using Flash. I had a big brother that just gave me all the answers in every videogame.
>>
>>739605676
I figured it out.
>>

Just go through Diglett's Cave? You're funneled through it by the sleeping Snorlax and it's a short linear path to the building.
>>
>>739605676
We just clicked around until we found the solution. Sometimes you got stuck for a couple hours and then you asked your friends.

>want to beat the game? better hope you talked to that random npc in the early game to get the radio!
What the FUCK
>>
At the time it was basic RPG etiquite that you talked to every single NPC because they either provided quests, hints or exposition/lore. Not like today where evrything has quest markers/yellow paint or straight up telling you exactly how to progress.
>>
>>739605969
>As an ESL playing pokemon I was stuck on Sapphire because of Surf
I think i was stuck on that for a little while as well. for me it was the flute to wake snorlax on pokemon blue. In the end I got help from some kid in school but I was stuck on that for long time
>>
>>739605676
its a small linear game where you just press A
>>
>>739605676
Is it the flash guy? I just brute forced the cave in darkness, but it helped that you could see the walls. I thought it was supposed to be like that for challenge.

you guys dont talk to every NPC you see?

You never needed Flash for Rock Tunnel. You can literally see the walls in the dark. The only difference with Flash is you can see the trainers.

The trainer dialogue literally references this

>>

>>
>>739609742
Same here. Don't remember it taking too long though.
>>
>>739609742
Yeah I just thought that was the challenge.
>>
>>739605676
I just went around exploring and pressing A on everything. I couldn't even read at the time. How does anyone get stuck in a pokemon game? Brute forcing rock tunnel without flash isn't even that hard for a kid.
>>
>>739609742
>somehow
You can literally see. Flash isn't the solution to the puzzle, it's the "skip" button.
>>
>>739605676
Kids have alot of time and wonder on their hands so talking to every NPC didn't seem like WV arduous task it was just part of the adventure. Just doing anything and everything to get the most mileage out of a game. To this day I still remember figuring out that the Radio on Pokémon can be used wake up your Pokémon in battle and taking that information to wake up the overworld Snorlax. If that happened today no doubt I'd only know that information from an online guide or something.

Talking to every single NPC in town was the norm on old JRPGs
There's even series's (Trails) where the NPCs get new dialogue after every single tiny event that happens in the story, even if the town is all the way out of the way from where you need to be. 99% of players will never see this dialogue, but those who for example travel all the way back to the starting village after something happens in a city halfway through the game, can read new dialogue from the NPCs.

its the same logic behind hidden walls in souls games
>>
>>739610342
Because wikis and internet access weren't as widespread or fleshed out yet so there was no choice.
Games today are worse in this regard if you ask me. You may not have to buy the strategy guide but you do have to consult the wiki. At least if you have this kind of mindset where you can't figure things out on your own.
>>
>>739610342
You used to be rewarded for exploration. Now thanks to braindead zoomers like you that is all but gone.
>>
>>739605676
Late 90s / early 2000s games are often designed so you usually need to buy supplementary materials such as a gaming magazine or official guide in order to be able to complete the game successfully but at the same time have enough plausible deniability that the devs could just say that you were not trying hard enough.

Illusory walls hide cool optional content that makes you go "whoa" if you happen to find it without outside help
Flash is damn near required. I know it technically isn't, I've done plenty of playthroughs as a kid where I was too lazy to go get it and just ran through rock tunnel in the dark

When you beat Vermillion, you only have two ways you can go, back through the way you just entered, or through the Diglett Tunnel.

The Diglett Tunnel spits you out in front of a path that leads to the house where you get Flash.

Retards say similar things about arcade games, and are equally wrong.
>>
>>739609393
>Buy the guide

Nobody did this. We had internet guides when Pokemon first came out.

I any case most kids just talked to everyone and either figured it out or just stumbled on the solution by going over every square-inch of the entire game.
>>
>>739605676
you can get your dex rated by Oak at the PC and he tells you that you can get an item from one of his assistants so that's a starting point. And diglett's cave is the only place you haven't visited at that point

flash and fly are not required to beat the game.
>>
>>739609742
you can literally see the walls. on the GBC you can even change the game's pallet, and there was a brown pallet that made it just as easy as if you had used flash. in gold and silver the dark caves WERE literally pitch black and it was entirely impossible to see anything.

Only Dancers know how to boogie
>>
>>739611530

>>
>>739605676
I figured it out easily in 1st grade and had no guides or anyone telling me shit. same for fly.
although when I replay it now I don't even get fly and just go through the cave in the dark which I have memorized.

>>
>>739617906
squirtle is great though. blastoise can learn surf, ice beam, and earthquake, and you get bubblebeam early while other starters are stuck with 40 power attack moves until halfway through the game. his only downside is that he exists in a game with a bunch of other strong water types.
>>

>>739605676
How were we supposed to know what? That you should talk to every NPC in an RPG? It's just common sense.
>>
>>739618373
Zoomers grew up on modern slop where there are 100 useless NPCs in every town and the ones you're actually supposed to talk to are always clearly marked. They have no concept of talking to every single NPC because modern games actively discourage that kind of thing.
>>
>hmm I can't seem to progress,

>>
>>739617906

It's because there were strategy guides, gaming magazines with tips, and manuals everywhere so someone always knew what to do.

So you heard what to do through word of mouth, or you read about it and you could end up reading about it just going to the grocery store with your parents because most of us would grab a gaming magazine and read it throughout the store and of course steal any stickers from it after our mom said we couldn't get it.

Do zoomers really lack curiosity to this degree? Why wouldn't you go everywhere you could and talk to everyone you see just to see what's there and what they say? products these days are made so that even the biggest retards and zoomoids who can't retain information longer than 30 seconds can access them. its why every relevant item is just given to you in modern pokemon games. there is zero indication where or how you get surf or strength in gen 1.
>>
>>739609742
I memorized the route back in the day.
>>
>>739641507
and if you did that, you'd quickly learn that very few of them say anything useful. a less patient person might even conclude that talking to all of them is a waste of time. in red and blue, almost none of them even just give you random stuff, the only ones I can think of is the guy that gives you a potion on route 1 and the guy that gives you a lapras. the rest of the ones that give you stuff are either plot relevant or require you to have to do something for them in exchange.
>>
>>739642640
>there is zero indication where or how you get surf or strength in gen 1.
There's an NPC that tells you about the golden teeth and the guy having Strength, and then there's I think a Trainer Tips or an NPC near the Safari Zone that tells you about the Safari Zone giving you a prize if you reach the special house.
>>

most of the other good water types aren't even available until you have surf anyway, at which point trying to use one is pointless. you can also get magikarp/gyarados and lapras without surfing or fishing, and if you're not interested in using a water type at all, there are a ton of non-water types that can also learn surf like nidoking and snorlax. Water pokemon are great in gen 1, but most of them aren't available until well after the point where you'd even bother adding them to your team.

It was a very peculiar and specific transitional period of time in the 90s where facts, fiction, and mythology about video games were primarily passed from those who had a strategy guide, an older brother, or rudimentary internet experience from child to child at recess like a game of telephone. Walkthroughs and secrets were almost like an oral tradition the way most kids discovered them rather than just googling for the optimal strategy.
>>

I'm thinking about doing a run where I hack in a team at the start. There are lots of cool gen 1 Pokemon I want to use that you can't get until the last like third of the game.
>>
>>739646837
Which ones?
Tangela would be fun to start with off the top of my head, you don't get it until really late but it'd only be useful early game for any real point.
>>
>>739646837
That's half the games desu.
>>
>>739646837
A lot of the late game pokemon aren't even good. Also worth noting that there are a lot of late game pokemon that just don't learn any moves at all until like level 40 because there's no way you could get them before that so they didn't give them any moves.
>>
>>739646968
Tangela's starting move is constrict which is notably one of the worst moves in the series. It has good special but it can't do anything with it for a long time. Constrict is not like Wrap where it traps the enemy for multiple turns. It's a base 10 power move that can lower speed.
>>
>>739647093
Its starting move is also bind which is just wrap
It doesn't get fuckall for grass moves forever because I guess fuck it you could never get a low level tangela anyways, fuckin gen 1 man

On the plus side starting with something like Dratini is actually great. It's one of the rare ones you can get pretty early so has a decent level up learn set with alright moves all around and can use a good amount of TMs. If there's anything that's fun to run through Red and Blue with you'd hack in Dratini is a frontrunner for fun.

I guess if you didn't explore everything. There's a fuck huge department store in celadon and there's no reason not to visit every floor. I guess you'd just have to make the connection that the guard wants a drink, and that you can buy water bottles.
>>
>>739647992
well yeah, it takes you several days to beat if you have no idea what you're doing. you can easily beat it in three hours or less if you know exactly where you're going.
>>

how can you beat it in 3 hrs without cheating?

If the guard actually said he wanted a drink I probably would have figured it out, but "Gee I'm thirsty though" seemed like a non-sequitur and my 5-year-old brain never would have guessed it had anything to do with opening the road. I'm pretty sure it's the only wall in the game you need a non-key item to pass too. I ended up solving it on accident by buying water just because and was really surprised when I gave it to the guard.

Aside from catching HM slaves, there's no reason to engage with any wild pokemon, but you're gonna need those MAX REPELS. There are more than enough mandatory trainer battles to overlevel your starter with, and all three starters learn more than enough useful moves to deal with the E4. Just don't teach any of your starters any HM moves exdcept maybe Surf on Blastoise and you're never locked in to any one moveset.

i knew all about the vending machine but how the fuck was I supposed to know how to get past the guard? I figured it would open when I beat another gym leader. It's an incredibly out of place side quest and it's not solved with a key item which is also wierd because it could easily soft lock you.

IIRC you can use any of the 3 drinks right? So I guess so long as people buy at least one of the drinks whilst in Celadon there's a good chance they'll try and go past the gate with one of the drinks in their inventory. Still an annoying "quest" regardless due to a lack of information.
>>
>>739648768
buy coupole of x accuracies and get ohko fissure and horn drill ezpz
>>
>>739648805
>which is also wierd because it could easily soft lock you
I guess if you were exceptionally bad or just did something stupid like spend all of your money on great balls and super potions. I guess it is technically possible, and they actually did change this in the remakes so that the Tea you have to give them is a key item, though it's an entirely different location.
>>
>>739648573
what level will your starter be if you just use it and nothing else? when I played as a kid I used charmander and usually I would defeat brock at lvl 16 and it was smooth sailing from there. But by the time I got to the E4 I was usually level 80ish
>>
>>739648840
I don't mean that I beat it in less than three hours real time, I mean that I beat it in less than three hours in game time. They generally correlate at 1x speed. If you are only battling with one pokemon, you're not wasting any additional time with the rest of your party. Catch a pidgey for fly, catch a paras for cut and dig, pick up the silph lapras for surf and strength, and you're set. The only part of this that's going to take a little longer is paras, because it is kind of rare.

>>
>>739649112
It really depends. There are 12 rare candies you can pick up in the game. One is in the power plant and one is in cerulean cave, so it's effectively just 10 candies, but that's an additional ten levels on top of wherever you wind up when you reach the league. Last time I did a charizard only run, a few months ago, I beat the league at with it at level 68.
>>
>>739649243
why not krabby slave? old reliable
>>
>>739649386
while it's true that krabby is a better HM slave, you can't get it until you have the super rod, which is located on one of the eastern routes you don't need to travel down, and you have to fight a bunch of trainers first, and you're better off clearing silph with its 4 mandatory trainers, getting lapras, and going down cycling road with zero mandatory trainers.
>>
>>739649674

Surf, while mandatory, is not in a mandatory location. Flash comes from Sprout Tower, also optional but it's good for early experience. The only HM you're given directly through progression is Cut. Getting to Cianwood only to realize you need Strength must have been a pain in the ass, because you can't even Fly back to go get it.

It's funny how the remakes basically railroad you with all of these, even Flash, so it's impossible to miss any of them.

Rock Cave is navigable because you can still see the walls. You could probably brute force it if you never find HM5
>>
>>739652794
Only on emulator. You can't see the walls on OG hardware.
>>
>>739652794
It's still a pain even with flash because of the encounter rate and the cave is full of dead ends and even two segments that loop. The only thing flash really helps with is that you can't see trainers in the dark, just the walls.
>>
>>739652918
I don't know about the original gameboy, but you absolutely can see the walls on the gameboy color. You can even change the game pallet while booting it up and some of them make the walls super obvious.

>Dark Cave is manageable without Flash but having it makes it a lot easier
Would HMs be better if they were all like this? You can cut down trees with your bare hands but your lead Pokemon gets poisoned by thorns, you can swim but because you aren't riding a Pokemon every tile is a random encounter ect.
>>
>>739653107
Well the main reasons for HMs is to halt progression. Tying them to pokemon also makes some level of sense. If you could just swim whenever you want, there would be nothing to stop you from swimming directly to Cinnabar and catching a Magmar or something to steamroll the game, because requiring a badge to swim wouldn't make sense if you were the one physically swimming yourself. I guess it kinda doesn't make sense anyway.

Regardless, I like the way later games handle moves like these, even if the games themselves are whatever.
>>
How did you not know about Flash? You're told when you're able to use Flash outside battle, did that not make you wonder?
>>
>>739654191
You don't get flash until quite a while after you're told you can use it out of battle. It stands to reason that someone might have forgot about that by the time they actually get it.
>>
Flash is easy to miss if you're an adult that knows right way to go or a hyper advanced AI that can see trees. But kids are a whole lot more likely to go through diglett's cave and find flash first before they backtrack to route 9.

there's something in claude's training data that makes him think clefairies are rare and valuable so he'll pretty much always catch one if he has the balls for it, and then something else that leads him to pick luna as the name for his (first) clefairy

I absolutely do not see him picking Bulbasaur on the next run, and that kind of kills it by default. In any case, if he DOES do gen II next, while DIG is not mandatory and is hidden in the National Park, still Chikorita is the only one who can't learn it and is by far the worst starter in gen II.
>>
>>739668562
yeah, thats why i say bulbasaur is a definitive gen 1 claude mon, he's pretty much mandatory for the run to not be bricked from the start
if dig ends up being a problem in gen 2 chikorita could very well end up the same way.
>>
>>739668736
yeah but at least bulbasaur is good on its own merits. chikorita is a "bulky" grass type. grass pokemon do not lend themselves to being bulky, and especially in the single player campaign, they are mostly useless.

I didn't use flash, but how I solved it was that whenever you took a few steps with a poisoned pokemon, the screen flashed for a second. I managed to catch the fact that one of my Pokemon was dying from poison and didn't realize the flashing was "hey retard your pokemon is poisoned" but I would keep splashing potions on it, which meant the screen would keep flashing.
I was hosed when it died but I was in the last room with the fossil faggot at that point and managed to find my way out.

Type means less when you can brute force the games by just being 20-30 levels above your opponents, which always tends to happen. Chikorita's levelup moveset is pretty dogshit. She does get Synthesis which is just a ghetto recover, and if claude stumbles into the right TM she could learn giga drain for sustainability, and uhh....earthquake, solar beam, iron tail...nothing great but at least she's a mixed attacker.

I won't deny Chikorita sucks but just avoiding Dig is by itself a godsend.

I clicked on EVERYTHING. Every bin, every tree, every person; because who knows? There was one bin with something good in it too.

This mentality stayed with me through world of warcraft, oblivion, fall out 3, monster hunter, dark souls and even skyrim. I hoarded EVERYTHING.

It was fallout 4 that finally led to me abandoning hoarding. Now in most games I just ignore loot unless its a weapon. This bit me in the butt with No Rest for the Wicked recently as you do want to be gathering EVERYTHING. But in 99% of modern games you will never use or need what you gather so you might as well ignore it.

First you talk to every NPC, and they'll guide you on where to go.
If that doesn't work, and you don't have internet connection like most folks did back then, you either talked about it on the bus with other kids who played Pokemon, or read a guide which were in stores.
Or if you were really lucky, you had internet connection, and just searched for the answer.

Pokemon gen 1 is a small enough game that you could exhaust talking to every NPC fairly quickly and find things.
