I remember I never watched any of his streams but just then i decided to tune in for the first time and he was fighting blue at the indigo league and managed to put his charizard to sleep only to fumble it by using sleep powder a second time and then he lost. So what happened after that?

Instead he used Rage, which when you use it, you cannot choose a different attack until you die. It was almost certainly unintentional, but Tentacool master baited Blue's Charizard into using Rage so it couldn't attack Claude's IVY with Flamethrower.

On the 3rd attempt Agatha switched her pokemon 3 times causing frustration through proccing confuse and misses. In the final showdown Claude meant to sac one low level mon to heal Ivy and he did sac them but he also forgot to actually heal Ivy until the very last sac that also baited Charizard into rage so no need to worry about fire attacks

Also Normal is not super effective over anything so the only use for Rage is if the opponent resists or nulls Fire or Flying. But even if Tide Water/Poison resisted Fire, Flamethrower would have decimated it. The perk of Charizard using Rage was so that it wouldn't be able to use stronger Flamethrower on Ivy
