Convinced every indie dev from that era got a free ride. Started playing fez recently and it's fine, but it would be immediately forgotten if it came out in today's market. Some of the games from then were genuinely very good and worthy of the praise, but others not so much.

It's the "fans" of these games that get a free ride while expecting the developer to continue updating it with updates at no cost for the next 29561954 years.

The devs that do this do it to themselves, just don't update the game if you don't want to. Giving shit away for free is what almost killed yacht club recently as well. Scope creep is a bitch and it's mainly the inexperience of these developers that causes it.

I think for a lot of them, they're enjoying the spotlight of having a bunch of "friends" that are interested in their project for the first time and don't know when to draw a line.
>>
>>739948805
Yeah that too, there's also a degree of wanting to be nicer than the AAA companies who always paywall shit or some delusion about nobly suffering for the perfection of your art, both of which end up leading to making poor decisions in the long-term

I guess devs just need to accept that their constituents are largely malicious ingrates. Helps to have personal experience with a family member who has BPD. Once you start to expect the unexpected, it makes it a lot easier to deal with shocking stupidity without a knee-jerk reaction. The only cost is that you begin flirting with becoming insane yourself on a regular basis,

I am working in Unity to make a game I really want to play.
You faggots will not see it until it's ready to release.

Basically it's fantasy XCOM. You have a Tower, you have your soldiers. They have a race. They gave a class. You have an evil unread lord sending enemies from Not-Mordor, and you have to fuck with his plans through your elite team.

Some of the critique I've gotten on Discord is that there isn't much to do in the Tower, your home base. I added home base defence missions that let you field every soldier you have. They said they wanted more to do *in* the base at peacetime, not understanding that peacetime means there's no game because the game is called "Tactical Fantasy Operations"

It gets to the point where you gotta ignore some feedback and just make the game.
>>
>>739946805
>Convinced every indie dev from that era got a free ride
They absolutely did. What's worse: They immediately moved to try to make Japanese indie devs lives harder despite the fact Japanese Indies existed far longer than indie games in the west have.

The entire western indie scene was a concerted effort from a bunch of retards who couldn't cut it in the industry from being too egotistical and formed a gigantic clique that directly lead to gamergate.
>>
>>739946182
A more accurate analog would be
>99% of people like red apples? I'm going to hire a consultant firm that tells me to make brown apples, never question them, add worms to my brown apples, then call everyone a chud if they don't want to spend 70 dollars on my AAA brown, worm-filled apples!
>>
>>739949618
That's fucking cool anon, keep developing the game you have in mind and not what outside redditors want your game to be (they probably want peacetime operations so they can date the operators)

>>
>>739949618
>It gets to the point where you gotta ignore some feedback and just make the game.
This is true of feedback and critique of anything actually, not just games. You kinda have to extrapolate potential improvements out of what they say and decide for yourself if it's a fit for what you're making, rather than implement what they want exactly. A lot of amateur writers get stung by this when they get people to read their rough drafts.

>I'm giving away free apples

If you ever thought dumb food analogies were /v/ culture, behold and despair at the dumbest defense of a flopped game ever. At least the ratio here is amusing.

Based, that's the exact mentality you need to have. If you've got a clear vision and path to achieve it then it'll turn out well. Any genuinely good suggestions you can easily shelve for a DLC or sequel too. Best of luck with the game anon.

Phil got a Canadian government grant, some additional funds from Trapdoor and I think won a cash award at IGF. Tale of Tales, another particularly infamous pretentious studio from the time, also got governmental arts and culture grants as well as museum commissions. A lot of indies from that time liked to LARP as struggling artists, but really weren't.

>>
>>739949624
You're thinking of Zoe Quinn and the vocal minority of fuckups that had to use Indie Game the Movie just to sell their games years after release because they couldn't make anything more than a one hit wonder, other than McMillen who actually is capable of making games. Plenty of other indie studios like Behemoth, Supergiant, and Re-Logic survived that era by continuing to work instead of trying to survive forever by releasing a $20 game in 2008 with no other work planned.

She was a part of that group, but Fuck Fish and John Blowjob were very explicitly part of that anti-Japanese group of indie devs that got high off of their farts and actively colluded to make their shit not stink. There are plenty of examples where the devs knew when to call it quits too. Robo Quest i think is the shining example. There's still things you can do at the base outside of battling. There are entire games dedicated to managing military bases.

He also piggybacked most of his viewership via suckling onto larger creators and then barely ever did collabs when his viewerships stabilized. I think it's most apparent what kind of person he really was when Crendor visited his apartment, it's kind of crazy Cynicalbrit ever did garner the kind of attention he did. I guess combining popular content with then grifting along the PC/hardware discussion proved lucrative. Karma is a bitch though, had it coming.

While "suck my dick, choke on it" will forever be fucking hilarious, I will give him his due respect for never backing down on Fez 2. I can't imagine it was far along in development at all but Fez was an indie darling and Fez 2 would've sold well just off of that name recognition alone, enough to make up damn near any budget. Still probably would to this day even, and yet he never went back on his word to make it. He hasn't even been in a game outside of "Special Thanks" since Fez. I gotta give him respect for that much, at least.

Basically Crendor made a video of his fridge which half-accidentally showcased his slop consumption habits that likely attributed to his health issues. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL3ZdFepBHY) Despite the fridge thing being a sort of humorous thing from what i gathered is that the relations in Co-Optional cast had been quite tense for a long while as most guests felt like the entirety of the podcasts purpose seemed to largely be to prop up Totalbiscuits channel. The other issue that didn't help is that basically after marrying his channel with Co-Optional after it was klepped from Polaris he then fucked off to focus on his "WTF is...?" series and technical rants instead of helping run the podcast. Obviously once he died and his wife took over, the podcast simply fizzled out as it didn't any longer serve any purpose on propping up Totalbiscuits brand. I've also always just found his content distasteful and practically easily identifiable as one of the earliest grifters in the Youtuber/Podcast industry. He was horseshit at playing most of the games he got into and most of his actual gameplay never got much traction, but by god did the people around him and (along with the industry) love the living shit out of him for all the wrong reasons.

>Also there wasn't much out there like what he did at the time.
Yes there was, it's just that they didn't have a third of his viewership and even then he used these tech talks to neglect the people who put him in that position in the first place. The Polaris split in particular was kind of egregious because it technically put a lot of people in his circle out of a chance to grow so stuff like Holodeck and Tableflip both had to go with the Polaris merger and kill their viewership as a result. Instead of creating his own brand and company and helping the creators that were part of the bigger sphere (especially ones which had a revolving door for Totalbiscuit as a guest) he just protected the bottom-line and made sure to salvage his immidiate channel by saying that they departed due to "disagreements between Polaris and himself in creative direction" In short, he made sure the competition went down with Polaris who were contractually obligated to stick to a sinking ship financially. It was one dick of a move, but likely one that never got called out as much as it should have been, largely because the guy had a cult following at the time.

I had and loves my original Xbox and 360, but when he said that (and when they tried to launch with always online, no lending/trading/selling games, kinect pre-installed, etc.,) I gave up on the brand. Then they apologized by saying "We're sorry you're not READY for the FUTURE," I never bought another Xbox, and never will. They showed what they wanted, and even after they walked it all back I couldn't trust them to not just update it some day and force it all back in after I'd bought the console.

>ew, a dedicated fanbase is cringe
>wtf why aren't games selling guaranteed millions
this was such a widespread opinion around that time, too. just delet customer and new customer will fill the gap like when you stomp in shallow water and it makes a temporary gap

Phil Fish set the bar for indie dev "STOP BOTHERING ME, I HAVE A LIFE TO LIVE" even though all you asked was "it's been five months, was just wondering if you had anything new to share" crashouts.

exact same situation here. a friend got an xbone and we tried to play perfect dark on rare replay, it wouldn't let us because we couldn't get the temporary 2nd player account to work at all like it would have on the original XBLA version. eventually he was only using it for netflix and before too long he wasn't even using it for that

>exclusives don't sell consoles
What the hell was he smoking when he said this?
Exclusives are the lifeblood of any console, always have been.

>but Nintendo going from the flopping Wii U to the overnight success of the Switch proves he's a retard.
This is not the example to use to drive home that point lol the Switch basically had a library of Wii U games and third party ports.
