What changes do we want gameplay wise? The only way youd be able to make an appeal to the lowest common denominator retarded fan with no standards, is by invoking IP, or highlighting the games most "likeness" aspects aka: Knight swinging sword on dragon or Female Protagonist spooked by zombie and escaping a grapple.At that point videogames are leaning to heavily on the visual aspect of their medium to flash interest. And my theory, is that this very fact, this fact that a videogame cant easily be marketed any other way than appealing largely to its visual aspect, in an economy and enviroment, where interest and value is dominated by how interest, attention, and desire is monetized. Is why so many videogames try so desperately to be "movies" because the familarity of a cinematic experiences allows those games to sell easier.This fact also explains why FF7 (1997) was such a phenomenon if you know anything about its marketing. The baffling thing to me, is how people reconciled that disconnect with the graphics, in the modern day people would go crazy about disjointed presentation.
