After playing for an hour:>The game has pretty graphics but run at much lower fps than expected on older hardware. Given that Jonathan Blow has built his whole brand and online persona on performance and optimisation, and made his own engine and language for 10 years, this was an unpleasant surprise. Hopefully there is still time to greatly test/improve performance.>Character controls are subpar, sluggish and inaccurate he didn't nail it in my opinion. Knowing how much of a perfectionist Blow is and given that the whole game is about moving characters around this is a pretty huge flaw that needs to be addressed urgently.>The tedium in his games keep increasing from Braid to The Witness to this game. Braid was really gentle and accessible game in that regard, also very innovative gameplay-wise. The witness was feeling much more like a puzzle-heavy type of game, but objectively is still a masterpiece on multiple levels (except for putting videos in it, which I still find incomprehensible to this day). With Order of the Sinking Star it feels like the tedium is reaching close to unbearable level; it will be a hard sell beyond the puzzle game enjoyer niche.>Another reserve is the "character abilities combination" part of the game, he hyped it pretty hard for years and now that i can play it and see where this is going i'm not super convinced that the character-abilities really mix/blend enough to enable new emergent gameplay. I guess it will depend a lot on the level design in the later part of the game.In conclusion I have some concern about the commercial success of the game. Performance and controls can still be saved though. I want this game to sell well so Blow can make more games but I am quite worry now, especially since he has sunk 30 millions dollars on this project and had to take a publisher. Please share your impressions.Previous thread:>>741145449>>741145449>>741145449
Eh. I played it for about half an hour and got tired of it. Idk it just feels like there's no point to the game, you just run around pushing boxes and shit.
Another issue:>Early in a stage you put the first piece is a game over position.>But you don't know about it since there are no feedback.>So you start pushing the other pieces for few minutes even though that first piece meant the game was already over.>Also rewinding means basically restarting the level in this case and you were just wasting your time all along with other pieces.
the queued animations really need changed.I get this is probably a technical thing because of his transaction system tying into the undo system, but it feels so bad, and sometimes fucks you up.
>>741175596>With Order of the Sinking Star it feels like the tedium is reaching close to unbearable levelWhat was tedius exactly? I thought the puzzles in the demo were 3x better than any puzzle found in the witness or the braid.
Jonathan Blow is gay, right?
>>741175596>>Character controls are subpar, sluggish and inaccurate he didn't nail it in my opinion. Is it true, as one Anon said, that the demo might be around 50 hours long?If so, then the developers have made a huge mistake. Fifty hours is more than 50% of people are willing to spend on a puzzle game, so a lot of people will be satisfied with the demo and won’t buy the full game.

>>741189673It is rushed. They started recording voice lines 5 days before the demo released.
Okay this game is cool, I want it. I read the description again and found out it's one of those wretched "timed' demos where you won't be able to play it after June 22nd. Those things suck but hopefully someone makes a trainer for it or something.
the game itself is cool so far. i just have the mirror area left.the voice acting and writing is pretty clearly rushed which is crazy considering he's been working on this for 10 years. i really hope they're able to pull it together by the end of the year or else i really think he ought to delay this, and put more time into it. because it's going to be hard for the vast majority of people to look past it and is going to tank the whole experience.

I know a lot of these lines are voiced by AI, but some of these voices sounded familiar. Do we know who the actors are, or is there a credits menu in the game that I didn't notice
Man, I just want to solve puzzles
>>741194502I'm also watching the stream and he mentioned the full demo altogether is about 10% of of the full game. He recorded 10% of all the required VA in like a weekend. If he literally only records VA on weekends, he's done in 10 weeks. You're retarded.
Can someone give me /v/ lore of this game? It looks like generic block pushing game.
>>741194889do you like puzzles?ootss is the game for u

>>741194994you dont want to re-record or bring actors to a studio multiple times, often they charge based on half a day sessionsso VA is done after the game is complete, the script is complete and nothing is going to be changed
>>741194617Pretty sure the red guy is Troy Baker, that one stuck out.
>>741194985>The % is based on 30 second levels dumbassThe levels get more involved down the line, retard.>And he's not finished writing the story so how could he record itHe has a majority of the year to finish the story. Recording all the VA will take two weeks at most and implementing it will take 2 days. See: The demo.>>741194994There's more to making games than VA, anon.
>>741195178there is certainly more to making games than VA, but this is a heavily story based game, where the characters are constantly talking to each other. it is like 50% of the experience of playing this game, so it should actually be a pretty high priority for it not to be dogshit.
>>741195352>but this is a heavily story based game, where the characters are constantly talking to each other. it is like 50% of the experience of playing this gameOverplayed your hand, mr ragebaiter
>>741175596there's more tedium than in his other games, sure, but that's just a consequence of being a sokoban-like. In terms of sokoban-likes I'd say it's probably the least tedious out there just because of blow's very intuition-based approach puzzle design. Maybe I just think similarly to him in some way but there's a lot more time having some idea what needs to happen and actually solving the puzzle and less aimlessly trying to find some framework to solve it than with say, baba
>>741195138Troy Baker?! I was thinking the red guy sounded like the English VA for Sterk from the Arland games.
>>741194889It's made by the guy who made The Witness, a highly acclaimed and pretty great puzzle game, and Brain, a highly acclaimed and alright puzzle game, so the expectations are high, especially since it took 10 years to make. It also seems to tie into the secret ending of The Witness.
>>741194889it's a block pusher with a bunch of wacky gimmicks made by one of the best modern puzzle game devs, I'd say to just try it and see how it feels since I started enjoying myself pretty quickly

should I be killing these two at the start? it'd be convenient to keep one alive to handle the others but it doesn't seem possible
>>741197050You'll be killing them all in pairs, you've got the right opening move.
>>741197050You have no reason to keep them alive. But you also don't outright need to kill them all.
>>741197129alright, just wanted to be sure I wasn't on a wild goose chase progressing with them dead
>>741189808Probably. I did something similar and only had one gem underground left, but the power of pushing gems around with the rod worked after 30 minutes. Someone said the restart point is when you get the rod, so worst case you have to do it from there, everything until that point probably can't be a softlock.
>>741189808I didn't have to restart at all, nor did I bother thinking too hard about locks, with the rod I just spammed along the green tunnel until I could get the gem.
I enjoyed the promise, the rest was boring. Maybe 10 hours in you get to start using all the abilities and puzzles start to get a little more free-form, but I get the feeling Blow doesn't like the many solutions approach. All of the story stuff is tedious and awful, if you can start overlapping voice lines in the first 2 minutes of gameplay, you have added too much bullshit. I don't know if I'll bother with the full game. I didn't last long with the witness, this game feels slightly less pretentious but I still feel like there's going to be nothing keeping me playing through the easy puzzles.

How many levels are there? I did 72 and I have no idea what I missed. Anyway, the game is boring and I don't like that there wasn't a single level in the whole demo that uses the 3D. Everything could have easily been done in 2D and it would have been easier to see what the fuck is going on. West was the most interesting, but it seemed really easy to just softlock yourself. The beams are also a visual clusterfuck.
>>741198564Wait, I forgot there was one thing I found that uses 3D. The mirrors can teleport the blocks while it's in the water but none of the levels use it.
>>741198564I found 75 but there could be more.>there wasn't a single level in the whole demo that uses the 3DMany of the levels at the beginning are adapted from 2D puzzlescript games
>>741198660Yea... I played those games. They weren't even that good to begin with not sure why he wanted to use those mechanics. Sokoban games that only use 1x1 cube shaped objects are just not interesting anymore.

the games audio keeps randomly cutting out for me, like it will work fine than after like 5 or 10 minutes it just mutes and won't turn back on until i reset the game. Anybody have any ideas how to fix it?
I'll admit the dialogue sometimes worked for me.>introduce the new hero, who's mute>next few levels are just her + one other guy>all of them start treating it like a therapy sessionMade me smirk.
>>741199936The one with the thief was my favorite, literally dragging her along while chatting
>>741199936The dialogue was terrible during the intro because you go through the levels faster than the audio plays, but in the heroes/mirror areas it was well timed and added to the experience similar to The Witness' audio logs. The writing was cringe half the time though. The mirror man's character was interesting but I found the asmr therapy woman voice unsettling.
>>741199310fez, return of the obra dinn, antichamber, chants of sennaar, recursed, and lorelei and the laser eyes are some similarly approachable puzzle games, but neither have very much in common. There's also blow's other titles braid and the witness, the witness is one of my favorite games of all time so it's an easy recommendation. If you want more grid based stuff can of wormholes, stephen's sausage roll, english country tune, patrick's parabox, void stranger, and baba is you are all good games, though most are pretty brutal and baba is you has a nearly inverse design philosophy in how it handles puzzles (blow games, including this one, tend to have a strong focus on presenting mechanics intuitively and iterating on that intuitive understanding while baba revels in giving you incomplete information, misleading you, and forcing you to experiment to figure out what's going on pretty frequently)

something about the game's presentation feels off to me.like the way the level access runes are just plastered on the floor in an unassuming way in the overworld looks very work in progress or like I'm in a debug level.and then within the levels (I went with hearty haulers or what it's called first), the characters start talking to each other as soon as the level starts, but I often don't even see who they're talking to until the responding character says their voice line, and that's a problem when the combination of the two characters you're controlling changes every level. idk, it might sound like I'm just retarded but I feel there's legitimately something wrong with the game's legibility. and then on top of that the voice acting isn't doing it for me either, it sounds like the monologues of passages being read from the witness, except it's meant to be dialogue so the delivery feels mismatched. the actual game is fun so far though, but idk it feels strange. also pressing random buttons on my controllers makes the characters skip around in weird ways.

Got spoiled a little bit, if you can call it that, and went west first as many suggested in previous threads. I was still unimpressed by the experience. I've played puzzle games and sokobans here and there, it's not one of my top genres but I have some experience finishing this type of game. (Animal Well, Baba Is You, La-Mulana, Paquerette Down The Bunburrows, Theta And Paralldox, Treasure 'n Trio, Tunic, Void Stranger, etc.) One constant among all the titles I mentioned is that I could run them on poorfag machines, and yet they would still have a stronger artistic direction/presentation than Order of The Sinking Star. It's commendable that Jonathan Blow built the engine from scratch and worked on the game for quite some time, but from a gamer perspective playing the demo, all of this prior marketing just falls flat. Push one of the crystals towards the mirror to finish the bridge. Mirror the last crystal onto the starting island and sink it behind the mirror so that you can push it.
It's growing on me. I did the mirror isles section first and was about to drop the game because of all the gay dialogue and same-y levels but then I went to the heroes section and there it was fine and made the characters feel fun. A bit Joss Whedon-esque at times but it didn't feel like the usual Jon Blow fart huffing.

Gave it an hour of my time despite hating sokoban because I was somewhat interested in its development history. A few things surprised me:1. The game runs poorly. I'm running a 1080 with a 4k monitor so most games with any fidelity struggle but Blow harps about optimization and the game isn't very visually complex so I wasn't expecting to get sub 30 fps drops.2. The dialogue pacing is horrible. I was constantly getting dialogue interrupted by solving puzzles too fast and I wasn't even using the run button. I only tried the north path which has 3 characters so that might be why but you'd think they would've tried a little harder. Constantly skipping through dialogue didn't really bother me though because...3. The dialogue sucks. Again, only tried the one route, but the overworld character was annoying too so I assume its all as bad. It's either "huh? what's going on? giant crystals, this is crazy" or something snarky.Anyways that's what stood out to me. I'm sure people who like sokobans will probably like it but that's a pretty niche demographic so I think JBlow is in trouble. I'd probably still play it if it was way shorter but I'm really not interested in push shit around 1000 times.

>>741210243Think about it, Anon. What happens when you press R on a level? It gets reset to the starting state. And if it's a big level, it gets reset to the state it was in when to reached the last checkpoint. But how would that work on the overworld? Should R reset the whole map? No, that's stupid. Should R reset only the screen you are on? On the surface level, one might say yes. But what happens when you only need to reset 1 block, like in the mirror section? This might block your way, or if it also resets your position, it would be annoying to go back. And what about puzzle elements that leave the screen? This is very much possible due to mirrors and skipping stones. The current system is great because it allows for more granular control and more creative puzzle design (as already shown in the demo on the second screen of the mirror part).
>>741210556>Physically modelled stuff, which are very popular these daysBasically nobody is using physical modelling. >>741175596>low fpsAre you fucking kidding me, wasn't that a big thing with jai?
>>741175596what did jack crawford think about it?
>>741222876>what is the benefit?the only thing i could think of on the spot is that it helps with the move history or something, which make undo basically current state minus last turn transactions
>>741221739if you have a transaction system, can't you late-rollback a transaction for late turns so that it's a bit less rigid?
>>741223067No. No language can guarantee performance.
>>741223280Blows entire thing with jai has been how shitty and non-performant all the other options are, as he cries and cries and cries about how bloated and slow everything is, and now he's made a puzzle game that runs like shit.....bravo Jon!
>>741223173the transaction system is clever, what I don't understand is that it's seemingly based on the visual movement of the player (when they pass over a tile border, if I'm interpreting the clip correctly) when it could just be calculated in the backend, making generating transactions basically instant and allowing you to arbitrarily tweak animations without having to worry about it impacting the actual functionality of the game. I'm able to think of an implementation pretty easily so I'd be pretty shocked if blow couldn't, which makes me wonder why he chose not to implement it that way
>>741223067And people are blaming the PC specs and it's not that. Something is wrong with the game performing this poorly.
>>741223182it's multiple things, input delay, animations time, input queue, that needs to be tweaked, it's need to be more snappy
>>741177698>But the way he talks is so homo-codedand? hes the one out banging and making games while youre on 4chan
>>741223647it feels like debug logs are on in the background
>>741175596>The game has pretty graphics but run at much lower fps than expected on older hardware. Given that Jonathan Blow has built his whole brand and online persona on performance and optimisation, and made his own engine and language for 10 years, this was an unpleasant surprise.I think this sums up a lot of "Make your own engine" faggotry.
>>741175596there is still plenty of time to improve performances and movement before the actual release
>>741224126Hes been saying this for years.People clowned the poor performance in the debug build, and now it's in the demo build
>>741207254I mean that quote is kinda true. If you look it the whole indie game scene it's all LGBT POC shit. I mean look at itchio, they always have some new political bundle on the front page every other week. My question is, why are indie games so fucking lame and gay?
>>741223182The problem I'm seeing, and that I suspect he's concerned about, is that since the animations are a bit slow someone may input [up, right, up] all at once without waiting for each animation to stop and intend for the character to move like in A, while if you have inputs override the current animation you could get a situation like B where a preemptive movement cancels the current one unintentionally. The big issue is that the game can't tell whether you're intending to override your current move or add moves to the queue. I think the best solution would be to keep the current queue/movement implementation while speeding up animations to reduce the delay between you making an input and getting the resultant gamestate you want
Am I meant to be trying to merge the two?
>>741223647Ran fine for me.. 100+ FPS at 4k but I had to cap the FPS because it was running hot
The performance issues people are noting in this game are actually kinda crazy when you think about it. This game doesn't look any better than something you'd see on the original Nintendo Switch.
>>741223067Apparently, a lot of people are having FPS issues. Everything is fine on my end, though.
>>741207748I knew how I had to line them up nearly immediately, got way too in my own head overcomplicating how I'm supposed to do so, and felt like a complete retard when I figured out the fairly straightforward solution
>>741224342Not all the way from that island, but yes.
>>741223927It does feel like a debug build.
>>741223067I swear his release mode isn't actually a release mode, and he's leaving a bunch of logging stuff turned on.
>>741223927Some guy on steam said the game prompted him to attach a debugger when he launched the game lol
>>741224328>>741224126It's a little bit of everything. He needs to have a proper visual debugging mode specifically for the movement/input, highlighting current and next tile (input wise) to see how much character visuals and inputs are in sync. This will be key to visual the problem.I'm not sure the queue is not the solution, he could allow late turns and cancel the transaction if there is one (basically a rewind then retargeting the next tile), keep the input and character movement tight and snappy (and synchronized). But again there is also animation delay and such as well that might be interfering. Also the issue seems to be amplified when playing with an analog stick, that would need to have its own visual debugging.
>Want to play more of the game>But I've finished all the puzzles
>>741225073>I'm not sure the queue is not the solutionI'm not sure the queue is the solution*
>>741223590you can even split the work over multiple frames, so you don't have to do everything at oncewhy is logic tied to visuals i have no idea, honesly.>>741224407true, the game is an unoptimized mess currentlyi should be able to even hear the cooler of my 4090 with that kind of game
>>741225073Can't he cancel the animations smoothly? This is what path of exile 2 does and it works well and looks great.
I have a mac that was technically state of the art when I got it a couple years ago, so I play games at 4k all the time. But this game's making the fans come on, which is concerning lol
idk why he felt the need to have fancy animations for a mostly top-down block pushing game.I feel like he'd fume at that in other puzzle games.
>>741225783I watched him play Patrick's Parabox. He seemed pretty happy playing it.
>>741225909Parabox has functional and just polished enough animations that don't get in your way.
>>741225783the problem is the inertia, slowness of animation, and the resulting desync between inputs and animation/movement
>>741225995Oh, I misread your post as "I feel like he'd fume at playing other puzzle games.".
Holy shit the red guy is voiced by fucking Gaara from naruto lol
>>741214163>>741215797Turns out I missed one of the HoH levels in the first area after the courtyard, now I'm all caught up
>>741226354the prison one?i missed it too
>>741226405The blue one on the far rightIt's where Wiz and Beef confront Hussy about her sticky fingers
>>741225121The wait for the full release will be painful. I was interested in the game, but had no excitement. Now I'm pure hype.
>>741175596The game uses all my VRAM on my RX6700XTnice optimization blow
Mirrors and adventuring party puzzles were great. I hated the promise, the gem mechanic is super annoying. Kinda torn on it and I loved the witness.
>>741227012completely the opposite for mewest was fun, everything else felt like a chore
>>741189808I was watching his stream and he said that yes, you can brick the level and there is nothing they can do to fix that.
somehow i just took 20 minutes on this level, maybe i am retarded
>>741227413o shit is he black??
>>741227479worse, brown
>>741227771Oh man!
>>741227413i beat it easily, but looking at this pic i can't even remember how i did it
>>741227325>there is nothing they can do to fix thatThis game is so sloppy, if that happened in another game he would lose his shit while playing. First off, they could not design the puzzles in a lazy way. Second off, they could put a list of object states that are softlocks in the game's logic from playtesting and start playing the fail music when it happens.
this game became borderline trivial once I realized that most levels textures and decals that make the ground seem worn from having things pushed over it, indicating where you should place the blocks
>>741227413It took me a while too, but the solution was quite satisfying for it
>>741228064decals are created by you moving shit
>>741228064Really? But this screenshot has no such marks: >>741227413
>>741228325nta, but it does have it thoughthey even show the solution too
I hate the mirror isles so much. Am I right that I've gotta get the rock into the space between the right island and the top island?
>>741228398The skidmarks are caused by you pushing shit around, i went back to check and they're gone until you start pushing shit around
>>741228419two exits and the orientation of the mirrors already tell you everything you need to know
>>741228545yeah no fucking shit
>>741228419yes
>>741228545>>741228609Ok here's the plan:1. I clone the guy and put the clone on the bottom side of the right island2. I put main guy on the right side of the rock3. I push the rock above the clone4. The clone pushes the rock into the gap toward the exit island5. I uninstall
>>741228846ez
>>741228003like this, pretty fun. There are a lot of these hard until you get it but obvious in retrospect type puzzles
>>741228398You are correct, the markings are there where the crystal needs to move, I had the solution mixed up in my headBut as >>741228523 notes, they aren't there until you move stuff there

>>741229453There
>>741229629funniest thing about this video is that he's unquestionably praising the game and it made blow mald because he was enjoying it wrong
>>741229743>>741229629Blow has deboonked this videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SROsAt1T-4
>>741229743blow never cared about soulja boy, he cared about the critics and everyone else online (who enjoyed the game wrong)
>>741229837>I'm NOT mad I'm NOT mad I love soulja boy I am NOT mad Soulja boy is GREAT it's just the MOVIE'S FAULT it's the MOVIE'S FAULT but I'm gonna BAN YOU BYE
>>741229991>>741229743Idk I can kinda see how the documentary might be edited in a misleading way. Like I have some doubt that he had strong feelings about a Soulja Boy video that was basically a shitpost. Like some black rapper "probably" wasn't his intended audience for Braid anyways, so he was probably complaining about people in the industry not understanding his game or whatever. But yeah the way they edited it with Soulja Boy nigging over footage of him complaining was hilarious, especially the scene where they told him to sit in a dark room while they played the Soulja Boy audio over it lol
>>741228031It's the legacy of Promesst. Thekla already did a great job removing the tedium from it. They made the worst of the 4 games into the best of 4. But there is only so much that can be done without completely abandoning the idea of it.
Looking at the dev streams, I hope this game gets a level editor after the launch. The system Blow made for himself is pretty good looking.
>>741217290What a terrible example, that game has some of the least responsive controls I've ever seen. OotSS feels sluggish until you realise that the animation speeds up if you input controls faster and it keeps a queue of your inputs
>>741232674On another note, I do recall him saying that this game is kind of a proof of concept (side project lol) for the language and engine that he's making, both of which he is going to release for free to the public. I wonder if the engine will release with examples from this game.

>>741236216If it's the worst, then why did I like it?
>>741233525Is there a level after this? I haven't solved it yet but it's my 74 and I can't find the 75th one on the map.
>>741236474Look for a level entrance that's golden instead of glowing white. For me, the missing 75th was pic related.
>>741236741Nah, I've got that one. Guess I'll go back to scouring.
>>741236474My save said 73 earlier but after i exited the level once and came back after exploring it now says 74 solved even though i'm still stuck on the same puzzle, i did however drop this rock so maybe that counts as a puzzle?
>>741236993Ah, it says 74 now. Guess this is the last one after all, thanks.
>>741177163Yes. He unironically ends his stream to go dancing and it's a gay kind of dancing even gayer than normal dancing.
>>741237151There are 75 total.
>>741237280As previously mentioned, I have not solved the long island puzzle.
>>741233525took me an hour
Apparently, Isodore is voiced by Darin De Paul. There are some sizable names in the cast. Explain why only the writing felt questionable so far, but not the acting.
Does anyone actually enjoy the shitty dialogue? The puzzles are cool but that shit is annoying
>>741238335I only really cringed when the 3 heroes talked to the big bad of the north world. Everything else ranges from passable to interesting. I'm actually intrigued about the main plot, as well as the story or The Promise and Mirror Isles. But I worry about Skipping Stones since there is a talking boat.
>>741238506Talking boats can be cool
>>741238335It's charming in it's own way. The mirror zone dialogue seems a bit up it's own arse but I didn't really cringe at anything in the game. Even the diegetic wishlist begs
>>741238335It's okay sometimes, but it will either teeter to reddit or out of place pretentious far too often. But more importantly, Blow has no experience with dialogue pacing, so going from The Witness to maximalist talking and story is a bit too extreme and the lack of experience shows. And the intention of playing while they're talking is lost on most people with too much experience playing games that don't properly handle audio and progress. So most sit in the same room waiting for the extended monologues to finish.
>>741238973>The mirror zone dialogue seems a bit up it's own arseAt first, sure, but then you get schizo kino like this: >>741202528
>>741235602Ties in to promise?
>>741229743is this what it's like to have double digit IQ?
>>741238335I can't focus on dialogs when playing so I have absolutely no idea what the story is about.
I know it's a problem here so am I softlocked?
>>741242101here, here and walk through?
>>741242212>>741242101the laser might be blocking the beam, just push it through to the far end to the north with gems and activate the energy source there
>>741242350>the gem* might be blocking the beam
>>741242101
>>741242620How do you push the gem upwards when you have no room to turn? I solved this puzzle by bringing the orange teleporter beam over instead.
>>741242101If you think you might be softlocked then restart there's only about 4 gems to collect after the checkpoint so it's not a huge setback
>>741242101You're not softlocked and everyone else is telling you the wrong solution for some reason.Hint: Use the blue beam
>>741242794i don't remember honesty, i completely raped the map
>>741242957>I completely ignored that beam.
I AM SO BAD WITH THE MIRROR PUZZLESI did everything else in the game without getting stuck, but I'm fucking stuck in a couple of the last mirror puzzles, they suck.
>>741242794Never underestimate the monkey.
>>741233525Someone post an answer for this, I'm going insane
>>741243558that one easily had the most time sitting there for me, I think it's how particular you need to be about tile distances for some of them, it's very easy to funnel yourself into seemingly close solutions that will never actually work
