After playing for an hour:
>The game has pretty graphics but run at much lower fps than expected on older hardware. Given that Jonathan Blow has built his whole brand and online persona on performance and optimisation, and made his own engine and language for 10 years, this was an unpleasant surprise. Hopefully there is still time to greatly test/improve performance.
>Character controls are subpar, sluggish and inaccurate he didn't nail it in my opinion. Knowing how much of a perfectionist Blow is and given that the whole game is about moving characters around this is a pretty huge flaw that needs to be addressed urgently.
>The tedium in his games keep increasing from Braid to The Witness to this game. Braid was really gentle and accessible game in that regard, also very innovative gameplay-wise. The witness was feeling much more like a puzzle-heavy type of game, but objectively is still a masterpiece on multiple levels (except for putting videos in it, which I still find incomprehensible to this day). With Order of the Sinking Star it feels like the tedium is reaching close to unbearable level; it will be a hard sell beyond the puzzle game enjoyer niche.
>Another reserve is the "character abilities combination" part of the game, he hyped it pretty hard for years and now that i can play it and see where this is going i'm not super convinced that the character-abilities really mix/blend enough to enable new emergent gameplay. I guess it will depend a lot on the level design in the later part of the game.
In conclusion I have some concern about the commercial success of the game. Performance and controls can still be saved though. I want this game to sell well so Blow can make more games but I am quite worry now, especially since he has sunk 30 millions dollars on this project and had to take a publisher.

Please share your impressions.

Eh. I played it for about half an hour and got tired of it. Idk it just feels like there's no point to the game, you just run around pushing boxes and shit.
>>
Another issue:
>Early in a stage you put the first piece is a game over position.
>But you don't know about it since there are no feedback.
>So you start pushing the other pieces for few minutes even though that first piece meant the game was already over.
>Also rewinding means basically restarting the level in this case and you were just wasting your time all along with other pieces.

What was tedius exactly? I thought the puzzles in the demo were 3x better than any puzzle found in the witness or the braid.

Is it true, as one Anon said, that the demo might be around 50 hours long?
If so, then the developers have made a huge mistake. Fifty hours is more than 50% of people are willing to spend on a puzzle game, so a lot of people will be satisfied with the demo and won’t buy the full game.

Not racist but definitely got a bit interested in guns after those riots. (like a lot of lefties were)
Chud i'd say in a narrow sense of the word in that even early on he used to ban people for talking shit about SpaceX specifically (rather than Musk) because he considered it anti-american to be against the only real improvement for US space capabilities.
IIRC he also thinks SF wokes were ruining Berkley his alma mater, that the anti-business leftists devastated San Francisco in the last years he was there with boarded up sidewalks and he mocked gamedev twitter specifically saying all they did was whine about the work and pile-on newcomers on the indie scene who actually did work and post progress regularly.
That's all paraphrased from memory mind you so it might be slightly off.
>>741181025
Probably depends on how fast you solve puzzles.
I get the impression that those who are quick already know the solutions to early areas from the games they're based on.

the game itself is cool so far. i just have the mirror area left.

the voice acting and writing is pretty clearly rushed which is crazy considering he's been working on this for 10 years. i really hope they're able to pull it together by the end of the year or else i really think he ought to delay this, and put more time into it. because it's going to be hard for the vast majority of people to look past it and is going to tank the whole experience.

I'm also watching the stream and he mentioned the full demo altogether is about 10% of of the full game. He recorded 10% of all the required VA in like a weekend. If he literally only records VA on weekends, he's done in 10 weeks. You're retarded.

>>741194823

>>
>>741194823
does that really sound like the right way to record voice acting for a game youve spent 10 years on? he can certainly do that and get it out on time but SHOULD he? i mean look at the results of just that 10%, it's pretty freaking bad. not as bad as the trailer but yikes.
>>
>>741194994
you dont want to re-record or bring actors to a studio multiple times, often they charge based on half a day sessions
so VA is done after the game is complete, the script is complete and nothing is going to be changed
>>
>>741194617
Pretty sure the red guy is Troy Baker, that one stuck out.
>>
>>741194985
>The % is based on 30 second levels dumbass
The levels get more involved down the line, retard.
>And he's not finished writing the story so how could he record it
He has a majority of the year to finish the story. Recording all the VA will take two weeks at most and implementing it will take 2 days. See: The demo.
>>741194994
There's more to making games than VA, anon.
>>
>>741195178
there is certainly more to making games than VA, but this is a heavily story based game, where the characters are constantly talking to each other. it is like 50% of the experience of playing this game, so it should actually be a pretty high priority for it not to be dogshit.
>>
>>741195352
>but this is a heavily story based game, where the characters are constantly talking to each other. it is like 50% of the experience of playing this game

>>
>>741175596
there's more tedium than in his other games, sure, but that's just a consequence of being a sokoban-like. In terms of sokoban-likes I'd say it's probably the least tedious out there just because of blow's very intuition-based approach puzzle design. Maybe I just think similarly to him in some way but there's a lot more time having some idea what needs to happen and actually solving the puzzle and less aimlessly trying to find some framework to solve it than with say, baba
>>
>>741195138
Troy Baker?! I was thinking the red guy sounded like the English VA for Sterk from the Arland games.

>>
>>741189808
Probably. I did something similar and only had one gem underground left, but the power of pushing gems around with the rod worked after 30 minutes. Someone said the restart point is when you get the rod, so worst case you have to do it from there, everything until that point probably can't be a softlock.
>>
>>741189808
I didn't have to restart at all, nor did I bother thinking too hard about locks, with the rod I just spammed along the green tunnel until I could get the gem.
>>
I enjoyed the promise, the rest was boring. Maybe 10 hours in you get to start using all the abilities and puzzles start to get a little more free-form, but I get the feeling Blow doesn't like the many solutions approach. All of the story stuff is tedious and awful, if you can start overlapping voice lines in the first 2 minutes of gameplay, you have added too much bullshit.

I don't know if I'll bother with the full game. I didn't last long with the witness, this game feels slightly less pretentious but I still feel like there's going to be nothing keeping me playing through the easy puzzles.

I eventually got my gems, I had a cool moment of clarity when I realized I could flush any row or column by repeatedly placing a gem and then pushing it. If this game's got more stuff like The Promise, it's gonna be an all-timer (though I don't know how much is original and how much comes from Promesst).

How many levels are there? I did 72 and I have no idea what I missed. Anyway, the game is boring and I don't like that there wasn't a single level in the whole demo that uses the 3D. Everything could have easily been done in 2D and it would have been easier to see what the fuck is going on. West was the most interesting, but it seemed really easy to just softlock yourself. The beams are also a visual clusterfuck.
>>
>>741198564
Wait, I forgot there was one thing I found that uses 3D. The mirrors can teleport the blocks while it's in the water but none of the levels use it.
>>

Many of the levels at the beginning are adapted from 2D puzzlescript games

Leaf's Odyssey, Can of Wormholes, A Monster's Expedition, Bana, etc. all just completely BTFO anything this game does. It was, originally. What's in the demo at the moment is a recreation/adaptation of the original puzzles. This is basically the intro, and not even all of it since Promesst 2, Heroes of Sokoban 3, and Skipping Stones to Lonely homes are missing. Only Mirror Isles has new puzzles, probably due to being the smallest of the originals.

>>
>>741199936
The dialogue was terrible during the intro because you go through the levels faster than the audio plays, but in the heroes/mirror areas it was well timed and added to the experience similar to The Witness' audio logs. The writing was cringe half the time though. The mirror man's character was interesting but I found the asmr therapy woman voice unsettling.

fez, return of the obra dinn, antichamber, chants of sennaar, recursed, and lorelei and the laser eyes are some similarly approachable puzzle games, but neither have very much in common. There's also blow's other titles braid and the witness, the witness is one of my favorite games of all time so it's an easy recommendation. If you want more grid based stuff can of wormholes, stephen's sausage roll, english country tune, patrick's parabox, void stranger, and baba is you are all good games, though most are pretty brutal and baba is you has a nearly inverse design philosophy in how it handles puzzles (blow games, including this one, tend to have a strong focus on presenting mechanics intuitively and iterating on that intuitive understanding while baba revels in giving you incomplete information, misleading you, and forcing you to experiment to figure out what's going on pretty frequently)

something about the game's presentation feels off to me.
like the way the level access runes are just plastered on the floor in an unassuming way in the overworld looks very work in progress or like I'm in a debug level.
and then within the levels (I went with hearty haulers or what it's called first), the characters start talking to each other as soon as the level starts, but I often don't even see who they're talking to until the responding character says their voice line, and that's a problem when the combination of the two characters you're controlling changes every level. idk, it might sound like I'm just retarded but I feel there's legitimately something wrong with the game's legibility. and then on top of that the voice acting isn't doing it for me either, it sounds like the monologues of passages being read from the witness, except it's meant to be dialogue so the delivery feels mismatched. the actual game is fun so far though, but idk it feels strange. also pressing random buttons on my controllers makes the characters skip around in weird ways.

With all the respect that I can possibly show in a mongolian anime forum, the game felt like a chore to me and wasn't that interesting from what I've played in the demo in ~6 hours. Got spoiled a little bit, if you can call it that, and went west first as many suggested in previous threads.
I was still unimpressed by the experience. I've played puzzle games and sokobans here and there, it's not one of my top genres but I have some experience finishing this type of game. (Animal Well, Baba Is You, La-Mulana, Paquerette Down The Bunburrows, Theta And Paralldox, Treasure 'n Trio, Tunic, Void Stranger, etc.)

One constant among all the titles I mentioned is that I could run them on poorfag machines, and yet they would still have a stronger artistic direction/presentation than Order of The Sinking Star. It's commendable that Jonathan Blow built the engine from scratch and worked on the game for quite some time, but from a gamer perspective playing the demo, all of this prior marketing just falls flat. People who've played the game will know what

i thought the missing bridge tile is a red herring
>>
>>741205021
1. You need to get the mirror on the other island.
2. Isn't that a conveniently placed tile of land between the islands?
3. You need to build a bridge for the mirror.
Solution: Sink the first crystal between the other island and the single tile of land, then teleport onto it. Push one of the crystals towards the mirror to finish the bridge. Mirror the last crystal onto the starting island and sink it behind the mirror so that you can push it.

It's growing on me. I did the mirror isles section first and was about to drop the game because of all the gay dialogue and same-y levels but then I went to the heroes section and there it was fine and made the characters feel fun. A bit Joss Whedon-esque at times but it didn't feel like the usual Jon Blow fart huffing.

I'm talking about the time that Steam tracks. Like if you play 5 hours now you have 5 less hours on the full game, so it's wasted in that sense

>>
>>741201910
192 map grids i see, 12x19
23 look like ocean or clouds, so we can subtract those. I suppose its possible you might activate mechanics later that raise tiles from the sea, or find a way to reveal whats under the clouds but who knows.

169 maps. Looks like you circled 6.
So you get to play 3.5% of the game in the demo.

Theres also the possibility the map expands as you reach the edges like how elden ring did after you leave the first region. This picture also looks cut off with western tiles, as well as the cloud tiles which suggest each should be a + sign. The lower right land also suggests its curved and connects to more outwards down or right.

I will play the demo tomorrow

Gave it an hour of my time despite hating sokoban because I was somewhat interested in its development history. A few things surprised me:
1. The game runs poorly. I'm running a 1080 with a 4k monitor so most games with any fidelity struggle but Blow harps about optimization and the game isn't very visually complex so I wasn't expecting to get sub 30 fps drops.
2. The dialogue pacing is horrible. I was constantly getting dialogue interrupted by solving puzzles too fast and I wasn't even using the run button. I only tried the north path which has 3 characters so that might be why but you'd think they would've tried a little harder. Constantly skipping through dialogue didn't really bother me though because...
3. The dialogue sucks. Again, only tried the one route, but the overworld character was annoying too so I assume its all as bad. It's either "huh? what's going on? giant crystals, this is crazy" or something snarky.
Anyways that's what stood out to me. I'm sure people who like sokobans will probably like it but that's a pretty niche demographic so I think JBlow is in trouble. I'd probably still play it if it was way shorter but I'm really not interested in push shit around 1000 times.

The level layout is the hint. When solving a puzzle always asses the possible moves first.
Look at the middle goblin for example, just from his position you can tell that you can only move him vertically and to the left, the right move is impossible.
All three need to die at the same time, so that basically tell you that he need to move last.
The first goblin is locked, so the only one left is the right one. What you have to do is basically trivial and that point.

>but you can also use thing 1 and thing 2 at the same time to use it to go to the screen above, but it blocks the paths right and left.
It makes a lot more sense to allow the play to reset thing 1 and 2 individually, and not both at the same time.
As far as I remember there is no example like this in the demo, but it's 100% going to be a thing in the finished game.

Think about it, Anon. What happens when you press R on a level? It gets reset to the starting state. And if it's a big level, it gets reset to the state it was in when to reached the last checkpoint. But how would that work on the overworld? Should R reset the whole map? No, that's stupid. Should R reset only the screen you are on? On the surface level, one might say yes. But what happens when you only need to reset 1 block, like in the mirror section? This might block your way, or if it also resets your position, it would be annoying to go back. And what about puzzle elements that leave the screen? This is very much possible due to mirrors and skipping stones. The current system is great because it allows for more granular control and more creative puzzle design (as already shown in the demo on the second screen of the mirror part).
>>
>>741210556
>Physically modelled stuff, which are very popular these days
Basically nobody is using physical modelling. It's been a meme since the VL-1, which is a shame because it's fantastic, but programming physical modelling is like trying to program a DX7 with your dick while on fire.

Nobody is advocating to reset the whole map here let's be real.
But obviously if you have unlocked things (sub sections, sub goals, whatever you want a call it), even if they cover multiple areas, you did it step by step in a certain order there has to be a way to reset them in the reverse order (via a stack or a unlock tree).
Perhaps you could rewind but also fast-forward if you went too far.
At minimum you should be able to sub-reset the thing you were currently progressing in (contextually).
Think about the amount of time player are going to waste when they are stuck/blocked, but then in order for them to reset they have to unfuck themselves (every time) first just to reach the reset tile, this is just terrible.
The reset already exist anyway, is just that currently it's a tile you have to go to.
Maybe it can be solved through UI, doesn't seem like rocket science.

I don't understand why he did it this way, what is the benefit? That you can pre-press left 3 times and move left three times in the future? It's not necessary to do that if your movement in a grid based game feels snappy and responsive. The delay is bad and it feels floaty and gross

>>
>>741223173
the transaction system is clever, what I don't understand is that it's seemingly based on the visual movement of the player (when they pass over a tile border, if I'm interpreting the clip correctly) when it could just be calculated in the backend, making generating transactions basically instant and allowing you to arbitrarily tweak animations without having to worry about it impacting the actual functionality of the game. I'm able to think of an implementation pretty easily so I'd be pretty shocked if blow couldn't, which makes me wonder why he chose not to implement it that way

The problem I'm seeing, and that I suspect he's concerned about, is that since the animations are a bit slow someone may input [up, right, up] all at once without waiting for each animation to stop and intend for the character to move like in A, while if you have inputs override the current animation you could get a situation like B where a preemptive movement cancels the current one unintentionally. The big issue is that the game can't tell whether you're intending to override your current move or add moves to the queue. I think the best solution would be to keep the current queue/movement implementation while speeding up animations to reduce the delay between you making an input and getting the resultant gamestate you want

Some guy on steam said the game prompted him to attach a debugger when he launched the game lol
>>
>>741224328
>>741224126
It's a little bit of everything.
He needs to have a proper visual debugging mode specifically for the movement/input, highlighting current and next tile (input wise) to see how much character visuals and inputs are in sync. This will be key to visual the problem.
I'm not sure the queue is not the solution, he could allow late turns and cancel the transaction if there is one (basically a rewind then retargeting the next tile), keep the input and character movement tight and snappy (and synchronized).
But again there is also animation delay and such as well that might be interfering.
Also the issue seems to be amplified when playing with an analog stick, that would need to have its own visual debugging.

Ok here's the plan:
1. I clone the guy and put the clone on the bottom side of the right island
2. I put main guy on the right side of the rock
3. I push the rock above the clone
4. The clone pushes the rock into the gap toward the exit island
5. I uninstall

Idk I can kinda see how the documentary might be edited in a misleading way. Like I have some doubt that he had strong feelings about a Soulja Boy video that was basically a shitpost. Like some black rapper "probably" wasn't his intended audience for Braid anyways, so he was probably complaining about people in the industry not understanding his game or whatever.

But yeah the way they edited it with Soulja Boy nigging over footage of him complaining was hilarious, especially the scene where they told him to sit in a dark room while they played the Soulja Boy audio over it lol

It's the legacy of Promesst. Thekla already did a great job removing the tedium from it. They made the worst of the 4 games into the best of 4. But there is only so much that can be done without completely abandoning the idea of it.
>>
Looking at the dev streams, I hope this game gets a level editor after the launch. The system Blow made for himself is pretty good looking.
>>
>>741217290
What a terrible example, that game has some of the least responsive controls I've ever seen. OotSS feels sluggish until you realise that the animation speeds up if you input controls faster and it keeps a queue of your inputs
>>
>>741232674
On another note, I do recall him saying that this game is kind of a proof of concept (side project lol) for the language and engine that he's making, both of which he is going to release for free to the public. I wonder if the engine will release with examples from this game.

Apparently, Isodore is voiced by Darin De Paul. There are some sizable names in the cast. Explain why only the writing felt questionable so far, but not the acting.

Does anyone actually enjoy the shitty dialogue? The puzzles are cool but that shit is annoying
>>
>>741238335
I only really cringed when the 3 heroes talked to the big bad of the north world. Everything else ranges from passable to interesting. I'm actually intrigued about the main plot, as well as the story or The Promise and Mirror Isles. But I worry about Skipping Stones since there is a talking boat.

>>
>>741238335
It's charming in it's own way. The mirror zone dialogue seems a bit up it's own arse but I didn't really cringe at anything in the game. Even the diegetic wishlist begs
>>
>>741238335
It's okay sometimes, but it will either teeter to reddit or out of place pretentious far too often.
But more importantly, Blow has no experience with dialogue pacing, so going from The Witness to maximalist talking and story is a bit too extreme and the lack of experience shows. And the intention of playing while they're talking is lost on most people with too much experience playing games that don't properly handle audio and progress. So most sit in the same room waiting for the extended monologues to finish.

How do you push the gem upwards when you have no room to turn? I solved this puzzle by bringing the orange teleporter beam over instead.
>>
>>741242101
If you think you might be softlocked then restart there's only about 4 gems to collect after the checkpoint so it's not a huge setback

You're not softlocked and everyone else is telling you the wrong solution for some reason.
