You have no right to complain about indie games, period, until you meet the following qualifications:

10 Farming Sims at 100% completion
500 demos played per year
Game Purchase Rate of at least 1 per week.
Your name is in the credits of at least (one) kickstarted game
Played games with a zero review ranking
Defeating at least one video game per month
You have fun playing video games

You just can't be taken seriously without any proof you know what you're talking about. Being a professional whiner is insufficient credentials.

Played a bit of this last night. It was slightly overwhelming at first but once I got into the stride of it, its pretty fun. Is a fucking bomberman with an advancing wall of doom that eats the single-screen stage, too many power-downs like making said wall faster because fuck you. This game is wrong, is a bomberman with meta progression.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4360280/Of_Bricks_and_Patterns/
A silly Tetris game where you fill a board to score higher. It is what it is.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3748520/SPRAWL_zero/
Gravity gun, pick up any weapon, use your shield to reflect bullets. It feels more like a FPS Dark Messiah than a boomer shooter or Halo. Good game so far.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4714100/Veritas_Tales_Witch_of_the_Dark_Castle_Demo/
So far I think this is my MVP, the art is good, looks like you do have a lot of choices, even though I didn't finish the demo it was enough to know that I liked it. Is strange the durability mechanic all your equipment has and how my starting sword can't really handle a strong move because it has a dur of 18 and counter spends 10 points. Day one play.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4078160/Changeable_Guardian_ESTIQUE/
it was alright, old school shmup. If you tap in the mecha form you shoot an overpowered wave shot. Ok game

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4341810/LarsGadiel/
Basic as fuck metroidvania, at least the dev is french and loves anime boobs which is based. Demo was a bit too short, nothing presented a challenge and stairs are terrible. Another ok game.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4041580/Scraps_Of_The_Machine/
The enemies are too strong and if you die you lose everything, I ain't going to turn around and start to hit respawning crates to build my laser again. Shame because it was interesting, you mech needs more health.

Not optimized for such a simple game, I checked my GPU temps and they were normal, but my fans were spinning hard I think it might have been my CPU though.
The voices are good and the massaging soon turns into "pero pero pero~" as you shop for upgrades.
Fairly basic game though but enjoyable for what it is.

Played a bit of this last night and its not usually my thing so I didn't really know what I was even in for. It's pretty short at about 30 minutes but it seems promising. It shows off a bit of the combat mechanics and its got nice 2D artwork and the girl appears as a 3D model that pops up in conversations at times too, and as far as I can really tell none of it stands out as being obviously AI. It's pretty light on the goon material for the demo but they did throw a little something in.

>I'm still having some trouble getting the hang of target acquisition. I think it's measuring via a combination of bearing for one spot and and distance for another spot that's throwing me off.
Oh yeah I've definitely noticed this too lol. It's a bit clunky at times as I've had things hit right on target and not register. The planning table and clipboard can get real fucked up real fast too when you're trying to plot out multiple bearing and distances.
>The devs stated on the steam store page that PVKK was one of the main inspirations for it
DIdn't notice that but that's pretty funny since they're kind of outpacing them on development.

Played a few games of that Sand: Raiders of Sophie game. One solo and one with a buddy. It was kind of fun in that Sea of Thieves sense but aspects of it are kind of jank. You can't swap weapons while sprinting, you get stuck going up stairs constantly because your hitbox collides with the landing hitbox, you get stuck at the top of ladders sometimes and interfacing with radial menus on PC kind of just fucking sucks. Does feel nice to loot stuff, piloting the walker is fun, shooting the gun emplacements is fun. Didn't really get the opportunity to fight any other players, the first solo game someone tried fighting me but he got jumped by the AI walkers so I skedaddled. I wish there was a way to properly repair your walls when they are blown out but either you just can't or I haven't discovered how to yet.

I tried out GrimDelve and it's so ass
The demo is basically a 50 minute RPGM VN loredump but sometimes you walk around and do basic sokoban puzzles.
Some elements of the worldbuilding are cool but the main villain is Evil old man rapist Goku with mind powers that lets him explode people's heads by thinking really hard.
My understanding of how this game came to be is the dev played LonaRPG and thought "I should make a game with rape in it too" and that was basically all the thought that went into it.

Action "pick a route, pick a upgrade, repeat" roguelite. I like that equipment/accessories changes your character's visuals, and you can add (and stack) special effects to your attacks (if you get a "fire explosion" effect, you can add it to your combo finisher, or your dodge attack, or your energy attack, etc.) which adds a bit of customization the roguelite gimmick.
A bit too easy and simple but it's a pretty competent demo overall.

I played the original version of this demo and found it rather dry and bland, but sometimes I leave them on my wishlist and wait and see if it gets better. This time, it did. Much higher quality stuff, lots of stuff laying around to look at, they start further on in the story than a slog at the beginning so you see interesting stuff faster. There is this maid who is down to fuck or something and you're living in old timey days so maybe marrying a maid is a scandal or something I'm not sure and anyway the demo ends with you finding the maid with her tits out masturbating to your dead grandfather for some reason. I think she might be a succubus I think we're going with "evil succubus" as the solution to the mystery. She was down to fuck your patriarch and now she's down to fuck you! aahhh

Not every game needs voice acting but I think this is one of the games that does need it. I'd buy it on sale.

FMV GAME

They got real police uniforms. Actors are half decent. Dialogue choices have a timer. You play as a kidnapped girl stuck in some desert hovel. Don't think the dialogue choices matter too much, at least in the demo. It's not bad.

a simple game but very effective. once i got the auto-mouse going, it was very enjoyable. i do think the gameplay could be slightly deeper. i know that some places are more effective than others, but it could also be music, the order in which you massage, how fast or slow, etc.

Way less demos have caught my eye but the ones that have have been better on average. I genuinely hope this shit turns into a genre of its own. Ever since that really brief part in The Darkness with the giant fucking railway cannon (which in of itself was just a really brief and heavily scripted part) I've had this itch going on almost a god damn decade now for a game where you're actually controlling a ridiculously huge piece of artilery like that. Pretty sure this along with PVKK are the only games so far that might actually be able to scratch that itch.
I suppose there's Foxhole too if you can find enough people autistic enough to build, supply, and man a storm cannon
>>
>>741263462
I think it's because certain genres just don't have any good games sometimes. For example, this next fest, there's no good fps games, and I'm only talking about actual fps and not game in first person which is different. Sure there's the sin remaster but that's it.
I think when people bitch that there's no good games, it might be because there's no good games within the genre they prefer for that specific next fest season. This of course, if we're taking their bitching in good faith. However I always see next fest as an opportunity to explore games I never would have normally so I suggest everybody else do the same.

Not ranking/rating yet since I'll probably replay a handful of these, there's so much less that interests me this Fest:

Signy & Mino Against All Gods - RPG where you build juggle combos out of limited moves with some aspects of timing. Scratches the itch of SRWOGS Endless Frontier/Project X Zone games with a bit of Paper Mario. Been excited for this one for a while.

Dewdrop - If that one Electroplankton minigame with the tadpoles and leaves was a physics puzzler. The last couple puzzles feel great when you get a solution that sounds good and there's a pretty deep sandbox mode.

BREKEKEKEX - Boy with pitchfork beats up frogs in a swamp. Way too early for NextFest. I couldn't get a handle on the controls and the camera is disorienting, but the core combat looks and feels solid and the enemies are VERY aggressive. Closest comparison is genuinely Kill La Kill IF.

Truck-kun is Supporting Me from Another World?! - Comes off like a meme but the actual mechanics are super engaging and reward constant pivoting to complete objectives, make deliveries, gain time, maximize enemies defeated, etc. with that getting easier as you learn the controls and the map. Probably the best game from this team so far and my favorite demo so far too.

Hyper Bun Buster: Rocket Hammer Action - Super slick single-screen arcade action game. Uses a mixture of Bomberman bomb kicking and Ys bump combat with a simple & effective scoring system. Genuinely difficult as well, I beat the demo on the normal difficulty after the hard equivalent was starting to filter me at the end of stage 2.

Normal Golf Game - Intentionally convoluted control scheme for a golf game with weird objectives. Has FMV sprites for the player character which is neat. Made by the guy who created Fruit Ninja.

Garuda Emblem - A River City Ransom clone made by people who clearly don't know what makes a good beat-em-up. Everything is sluggish, imprecise and definitely didn't get even one pass for balance.
>>
>>741264373
EGO - Insane art and visual style, even more insane controls that made no sense and wasn't helped by the tutorial having no text. I wish I understood what it wanted because it looks so interesting but it also mostly seems like a speed-focused platformer which aren't usually my bag to be fair.

DekaDuck - Solid Mega Man X-like that isn't super derivative and has sleek art. Gimmick is the ability to grab enemies and throw them in 8 directions, so a bit of Mischief Makers.

Lurruna - Classicvania (specifically Rondo's movement options) but you throw bombs and instead of subweapons you use your ammo to buff your bombs. Feels how it should, very pastel visuals and Genesis-sounding OST. Newest game from PD_CGT who has just not missed yet (Disaster Arms is phenomenal and his other two games are quite good).

Changeable Guardian ESTIQUE - 8-bit shmup with good art (mechs and girls, what you'd expect) and presented as if it was a collected re-release of both the Famicom & NES versions of an actual game. Definitely seems easy based on Stage 1 but it could ramp up.

Kinda interesting wallrun horde fps. Movement felt fine, guns were a little wonky but zooming around with the heavy light cannon was pretty fun. Enemy design being shapes did nothing for me.
Didn't see any pilotable vehicles like the store page was advertising which was a lot of the reason I wanted to try this.
Didn't even take any screenshots so you know it wasn't particularly interesting.

Pulsebreaker has pretty good tutorials, actually, surprisingly good. But the combat is sort of complex hence the need for tutorials and the whole point of Survival Horror is pretty simplistic combat honestly if I want complicated combat games there's plenty of action games there's no end to the action games. survival horror is supposed to be more cerebral than just blam blam blam.

you just have to try the demo, you either like it or you don't i guess. it's a rare action combat game with camera aim instead of a lock on system. idk, something about this reminds me of absolver but not impossible to digest for the average person. it's like a 3rd person fighting game. so far i think it's rough around the edges but it has potential to not die immediately like absolver did.

I never used lock on in AC6 because I used KBM.

>>
>>741272645
i'm getting fucking absolutely massacred dude, i'm starting to realize the combat is a lot more like smash bros and i haven't played smash since brawl released. still getting used to the inputs but I still don't quite know how to combo yet. i think the spear guy was easier to play so far but the frog seems like it'd be op as fuck if i learn that disgusting drop kick combo blem kept doing on me
>>
>>741272820
the frog could do with a movelist and it took me a good while to get that fight down

you can often combo his dropkick into the charge he does (left + attack -> forwards + attack)
>>
>>741272774
i've never played that before but the combat doesn't need lock on since your character is always facing in the direction of the camera. it's not like dark souls or nioh where you can unlock and have omnidirectional movement/attacks.
>>741272879
i wasn't expecting to have this much fun with a demo. it's unironically a lot like black desert online's pvp which excites me because for some reason, i love action combat with camera aim way more than lock on or tab target. it's such a rare genre and usually you only get slop combat like new world or gacha games with 3 hit attack chains and 4 abilities or whatever.
>>
>>741272934
also it's very weird how the grab from the first character is on E but on the frog it's d + lmb for some reason, E should probably be the default grab input between all characters

This looks cool but all you do is fly in lock-on range and press your fire support button, it's super boring to play. And despite the game being called "Last Drone War" you don't pilot any FPV drones like the store page advertises, you just call in drone missiles. Really liking this one. When reading about it, I was a bit disappointed when they talked about it including humour, but it was decent enough, and not the kind of obnoxious I've come to expect from modern video game humour.
The atmosphere, music and general ambience was neat. I really like it
I just hope they work hard on polishing it, because some parts are really poor at the moment. Combat being one, which is a kind of a big issue in an FPS. The guns feel like shit (no recoil) and the small spiders are so incredibly annoying and unfair. Also the torch is almost useless.
Most of it I really liked.

How come some of these demos don't have an invert mouse option. I get that I'm a werido for still using an inverted Y axis, but its insane to me that such a simple thing gets left out of these indie games when every big budget first person game for the last ~30 years has had the option.

>>
dust front is cool but i wish you could zoom out and the camera angle is kind of weird
>>
>>741275189
I'm fine with that. I'd rather listen to shit actors try their best than expensive actors with overly inflated egos act in the same "perfect" way, sounding exactly the same, in every fucking AAA game.

Also, it's not as if OG System Shock didn't have some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard, and I still love it.
>>
>>741273849
Horribly clunky. The game has no controller support so you're forced to use your mouse.
>>
>>741275245
Agreed. Also looking at trailers I was expecting it to be a bit slower, and a bit more like CoH or something in terms of gameplay. As in, cover matters a lot and combat is a slow tug-of-war. It feels a bit more generic than I expected; build one mirrion troops, attack move them until you win. Maybe I'm just shit at it?

Either way, the ambience of the game is amazing, and all sorts of artillery in this game give me orgasms. Can't believe that it doesn't feel as good in other RTSs. Despite its flaws I'm still exited for the final game.
>>
>>741275245
This is my main gripe as well. Since playing SupCom I find it difficult to not want bigger zoom-out functionality in any RTS. I also find it hard to come up with a reason as to why not to allow it.

Here's what I've gone through so far:
>SRAWL zero
Pretty fun, but a bit easy and simple if you ask me (see >>741197749). Feels more F.E.A.R. than Halo, only thing really resembling the former is weapon pickups and the letterboxing for parts of the levels. Now that I think about it even the F.E.A.R. comparison feels a tad weak, enemy placement and AI in relation to level design could use some polishing. Still good though, will keep an eye on it, I hear it got patched to be less of a cakewalk.
>My Beautiful Faraway, Please Don't Be Cruel To Me (picrel)
Some sort of surreal exploration game, seems to be set in a shared dream or purgatory of some kind. Progression's tied to puzzles - kind of Resident Evil style where you find x item to either put somewhere or activate. Really nice atmosphere, quite short.
>Scraps Of The Machine
First-person mech game with a cockpit HUD that's very HAWKEN. You can get parts/weapons for your mech by finding them or from enemy mechs you destroy. But between the levels being dragged out, and your mech being super squishy forcing you to be passive a lot, gameplay is kind of a bore, found myself playing the game on autopilot after about 10 minutes.
>On The Way Home: Strange Incidents
Nip horror-ish VN. You just direct the two girls home and click on spooky stuff if you want to see them react to it, they're pretty casual about what they see. It's alright I guess, too short for me to make any particular judgements. I like the tone at least.
>Dust Front RTS
I'm not very familiar with the RTS genre, but this is pretty fun, it seems pretty simple, since it's mostly focused on the spectacle of large-scale fights rather than resource autism, resources are still important, but doesn't seem to be the focus. I wanna sink my teeth into it a little bit more, but so far it's fun.
>>
>>741275410
>I also find it hard to come up with a reason as to why not to allow it.
For marketing reasons, I could see it being pretty bad if everyone who plays it on youtube just zooms so far out that you can't see how incredibly detailed all the animations are. If you were to allow it, casuals wouldn't see one of the prettiest RTSs ever, they would just see another RTS where autists zoom out and click everything

Having said that, I hope he adds wider zoom range in the final game.

Hey Demon's Reign dev, I played your demo.
>The second line of dialogue in the intro has botched grammar, that's a bad start. Based on the rest of the dialogue I'm guessing you're an ESL too. Get a native speaker to tweak the dialogue a bit so it's less stilted. In particular your use of contractions in dialogue is inconsistent.
>Don't use the default RPGMaker victory fanfare in your grimdark fantasy game, you fucking idiot.
>Your intro sequence isn't an homage to Blacksouls, it's a blatant copy.
>If your game is meant to be focused on exploration then only having one area be available and it being completely linear until the demo ends is not showcasing that. I also didn't get to fight the bonus boss since I didn't pick the extra key as the starting item.
>The demo was extremely easy, especially since Dodge here is a guaranteed evasion rather than only an increased chance like in Blacksouls. This makes beating the dragon trivial.
>Your original art for characters and enemies is pretty good and probably the best aspect of the demo. Battle effects were also pretty good.
>What was not good was the demo boss just instantly going into battle when you interact with the fog gate, not even having any kind of intro for the actual boss in the environment, come on, don't be lazy, especially when you're aping Blacksouls so much which just makes your game look worse by comparison.
>You promised fairy tits and there were no fairy tits in the demo. Fuck you.

I expected more unique aspects since you are basically piloting a metal gear but the game mechanics are just way more simplified versions of the fire solution calculations from silent hunter / uboat, except here both you and your target are stationary and distance calculation is effortless

Maybe but right now it's in this difficulty limbo where fire solutions are trivial but still take a minute or two of just going through the motions to complete and there's like 5-10 targets every mission so it just becomes tedious.
Robots would help here as well where you could orchestrate the fire mission and your mind slaves would do the basic stuff like elevation and rotation

>Empulse
Blatant Titanfall 2 clone. As a old /tfg/ man this hits pretty well (though needs some polish, sometimes I just randomly stop while slidehopping) and the p.a.i.n.t. gimmick is neat (grenades that create an AoE with buffs like speed or jump boosts). However, the weapons look like they're all hitscan and you're forced to play as a nigger until level 44 where you unlock the white man, which instantly disqualifies this as potentially being good. While writing this I realized this is coming from the splitgate devs, which is probably also a huge red flag.
>Echos of Aincrad
combat is alright (though "switching" is a retarded gimmick that feels like it's just here to copy the anime and has no actual use), map design is atrocious. Game sells itself on exploration but is also insanely restrictive on where you can go if you try to walk anywhere but the paths. Everything either has high walls you can't climb, areas you can't drop down to because of the PATHETIC fall height, or actual invisible walls. I gave up after coming across a bridge that was blocked because "outside the mission area", despite LITERALLY going towards the objective and instead you have to take an extremely long path around. Also death game mode being locked out if you transfer your save to the full game sucks.
>Iron Nest
Pretty cool sim. I think this would be much better in VR, though the dev's already stated a big MAYBE if he ever figures out VR dev (gl with that). The angle controls being calculated automatically feels a little sour though, feels like something you should have to do yourself. Wishlisted

Difficulty feels OK but has weird balance issues like enemy shotguns having further reach than your sniper beam rifle.
Loosing you kit on death and having to farm before proceeding can get old, but it was manageable in the demo level.

I'd imagine moving targets and shit that forces you relocate are going to play a role in the full game. One of the locked req cards is for launching mines which I'm guessing are going to be used to set up minefields for moving targets. There's also a card for moving the iron nest which I'd also imagine is going to play a role in terms of gameplay at some point down the road (maybe there's going to be partisans or some shit down the road trying to take you out and you've got to move the iron nest before they can get too close). Considering you've got a stop watch that tracks how long it takes for a shell to hit a target I'd imagine that's probably going to play a role if they introduce non-stationary targets as well, like calculating how long it'll take your rounds to hit a target so they hit on target while they're on the move

>>
>>741290549
If by rotation you mean switching into characters during combat then I guess so. Never played a gacha in my life so this is new to me. You basically use your skills and combos until the game flashes a "tag in this character for a free combo" prompt, then you do and the character swaps in and does a combo that usually staggers the enemy enough to trigger ANOTHER character's combo prompt.

Your post reminds me of World War Z, the book. It has walking zombies. one of the short stories happens in Japan, where a hikki has to learn to survive, finds a shovel/sword and starts swinging. the premise that the risk is not being outrun but running out of stamina is far more interesting than another shooting game with running zombies. Zomboid is that but with too much autism for me.

Fast paced early 00's-inspired shooter with no frills, some good music and a unique setting/atmosphere. Has a no-reloading design where you magdump with a weapon, throw it at an enemy and pick up a fresh gun off the ground. Some of the guns feel really cool to use, but the most common ones are just the typical hitscan pistol/smg/ar which I found a bit boring.

Pretty simple cookie clicker-esque town building incremental. Not great, not bad. Hard to put down, but I think the visual progression is lacking.

>Valor Mortis
First person Souls in a supernatural Napoleonic setting. Seems really competently made, animations are smooth and polished and it has kind of a unique setting. But for some reason I just couldn't find myself engaged with it and didn't really give a shit about it, ended up alt f4ing because I got bored. Hard to put my finger on exactly why.

>Mortal Shell 2
Never played the first but it seems like a big glow up from the studio. Solid souls sloppa.

Yeah I feel you. The car selection feels better and more balanced in the demo even if now the sidewinder became the overall best thanks to its ability to take corners better and top speed being less important. In the old demo, the blytz (muscle car) was the best on every map once you knew how to play it, despite the initially bad handling if you maintained top speed you had more leeway to aggressively take turns. I liked that more to be honest. It's just going to take a bit of time to re-adjust. The new maps and music are all better. I thought project turboblast was part of the next fest last year, not this time

Not actually a part of this fest but I would remind everyone that the Quern sequel comes out in a week and has a demo (from a previous Next Fest) available.
I liked it.
>>
If we're being honest I will never have time to play any of these demos although I did enjoy
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3819690/Nox_Mortalis_Demo/
last night

It's a dungeon crawler with just a hint of survival craft which as a survivalcraft myself hater wasn't so bad. And an overworld which as an overworld enjoyer was quite nice from a dungeon crawler. The pacing reminds me a bit of the original Zelda, largely combat and dungeons with a bit of overworld exploration to find gear upgrades and supplies.

What the fuck. Judging by the screenshots I assume it's probably due to stupidly large textures and complex models (it usually is) which is especially retarded because it's a fucking RTS. You're looking at shit from a distant aerial view and you're not going to be taking the time to closely examine your units because you're going to be bouncing all over trying to micromanage a fuck ton of dudes all over the map. You don't need super detailed models.
>>

If the game is fun I don't give a fuck if it's "trooncoded" unless the dev slaps me with a tranny flag over the face.

I finally ended up beating the demo last night before going to sleep. I still think clem is the most bullshit fight his fucking combos are disgusting and he can seemingly just grab you out of any animation with ease. I can't tell you how many times I aerial w+lmb and he just grabs me out of the air. Blue frog wasn't that bad but that's just because I think the pitchfork boy's aerial s+lmb is kinda amazing. I can't wait to see what other characters or fighting styles are gonna be in the game.

If you like stacking on-hit skills and effects to make a completely broken build that spits out pages upon pages of damage procs in the combat log, I recommend Path of Achra. It's offline and no AI, in fact supposedly the guy isn't even a game dev he's a writer/poet.

if you're looking for another SaGa-inspired game, check out Crystal Project. Spoilering because it gets shilled a bunch and people are sensitive about seeing it. Has a 8-12 hour demo to check out if you're interested

I played the demo for LarsGadiel. It was a fine retro-style metroidvania, nothing exceptional. I found a bug where I couldn't buy the necklace in the town despite having the money for it, the buy background disappeared but the text stayed and I couldn't do anything but exit. The music is meh, and the colors are a little grating on the eyes but that's just preference.

Great racer. Feels good, almost a bit easy. I miss the air breaks from Wipeout. The boost focus almost makes it feel more like a platformer.
Very slick. Wipeouts aesthetics are hard to beat and this one is neat but doesn't really come close, other than some aspects of the vehicle design like the nose.
Music is pretty lame though. Stays on wishlist.
