I like the first 3 games and Remake a lot. Remake 1 is one of my top 10. I used to do daily playthroughs on the Cube back in high school. I didn't like Code Veronica or Zero at all. Its true the other 4 are "simple" games that anyone can complete (on Normal) but I think thats a benefit and not a problem that needs fixing. If your reference point for "tank controlled RE" are the later two games where they attempted to "expand on the mechanics" and "make it hardcore", I can see why you wouldn't like it.

I just played through the first few RE games and I got used to the tank controls pretty quickly and I understand why they used them(the fixed camera angles) but I think ultimately they are the definition of dated and not good. I really like the pre rendered background though, theres a lot of beautiful mood setting screens that remakes dont even try to recapture I was also surprised how much content was cut out of 2 and 3 in the remakes.

I despise the bosses in re1-3 ps1 but the overall exploration thing and deciding when to spare, wound or kill zombies and other enemies, is still pretty good.For me the bosses are such that all the tank mechanics fall apart for one and you will hate it unless the boss is one where you can escape or just grab a key and leave.The ones where you absolutely have to fight suck because 1) on first playthru they really on you going "oh shit" and being a surprise, but you soon realize you don't have the grenade launcher with special ammo on you because you never use or need it during the normal gameplay loop, and 2) when you reload the save it's no longer a surprise because if you know what the boss is about, you can take your time choosing only the correct weapons, so what's the point?Would I want these games to be like re4 where unarmed enemies drop ammo and in boss fights ammo just appears out of somewhere? No, but there should be at least some environmental way to damage and kill every boss no matter what guns you had on you. And the knife should always be on you, that's what re4 got right, because why the hell would any of them not carry it.

Code Veronica has a lot of "we can't decide if we're a horror game but also RE technology/mechanics aren't refined enough for full on RE4-style action yet" and RE0 peaks at the start with the train. I think CV has the most to gain from a REmake, and even RE0 might be more daringly improved if they just rebuild the whole thing to be a more conventional RE2make-style solo experience with Billy as maybe a supporting NPC in the background rather than juggling two inventories and just throwing shit on the floor.
