Vanessa and Seth should be good against the mages here along with whoever is holding the Pure Water.I can see why you're having trouble though, this chapter has fog, poison weapons, steel weapons, ranged weapons, and a good enemy mix to take into account, along with reinforcements that jump you.

My disconnect with Verdant Wind and Claude as a whole is that it just sort of feels like it’s personally not interested in the broader narrative. I’m still not even really sure what exactly Claude’s motivations entirely areDimitri and Edelgard both had vast personal traumas that shaped them and they have clearly defined goals beyond “I want Fodlan to be nicer”. With Claude there’s not really a shaping trauma, and the only really negative event in his life was minor racism about him being brown. He doesn’t really seem to have any reason for doing anything that he does beyond just wanting to do it.

As the Neutral Route representative (to borrow SMT terms), he is not supposed to have the same emotional hangups that would prevent a rational hand in saving Fodlan. Not being stuck in his own head lets him view the world as is and lets him make the most "human" of geopolitical choices. But also he understands why radical solutions would be necessary, it is why even he says he would have just invaded Fodlan with Almayra should push comes to shove, Edelgard just beat him to the punch.This is why Three Hopes made it a point in him needing to personally kill his brother to stop Almayra's invasion, this (combined with no Byleth) RADICALLY steers his decision-making to a more emotional, irrational level. Claude CAN go wrong, it just that Three Houses wasn't interested in making him another basketcase in a game filled with them.All this said, yeah, it does just make him a really lame character.
