When did Pokemon lose its soul?
>>
gen 6 is when it lost everything
>>
The real answer is Gen 3
The answer you want to hear is whatever game came out when you became an adult
>>
>>743782795
gen 3 was the last time genuine effort and fear was held by the dev team
once it still succeeded they realized that they could just shovel out shit and people would still buy it
gen 4 was when the franchise became the lame memberberry slop it is now, and gen 6 was the kiss of a slow agonizing death

People like to say "Sonic had a rough transition to 3D", but no franchise has suffered a rougher transition than Pokemon.
A static 2d action pose will always be better than a cheap 3d model that stands there like a shy teenager with their hands in their pockets, but for some reason game freak have latched on to the idea that we need to use the same shitty 3d models from the 3ds days.
Also cries. Modern Pokemon cries are all so indistinct, or just an animal noise. I swear every new dog pokemon is just a bark, no editing, just woof.
I couldn't name a single nu-pokemon cry, but could probably name everything from gens 1-4.
And to top it off, they can't design anything cool anymore. Pic related
>>
>>743782795
Gen 4 actually because the devs hated working on it and all previous titles. The devs had fun making Gen 5 exactly when everything was going to shit and the designs show.
>>
>>743782698
Gonna be honest here, EVEN the Stadium 3D models for Blastoise and Typhlosion were kinda lame too, they're one of those pokémon that looked MUCH better in their spritework than in any of their two official 3D models.
>>
>>743782795
Facts. Everything about Gen 3 is good but the designs were starting to get retarded. A few cool ones in the mix though.

Good to know you prefer saturated colors to on-model representations.
>>
>>743783284
correct
by gen 3 pokemania had already printed an absurd amount of money. the games at this point in history are no longer about creating something ambitious but rather more focused on keeping the money printer going.
>>
>>743783494
You underestimate the good shit Gen 3 brought to the series, starting with the damn Box System overhaul.

Nah, Game Freak/Pokemon Company was extremely corporate since gen 2. Reading those old interviews is really eye-opening. They've almost always been like that.

After Stadium and Colosseum. Those are 3D and still look great. Gamefreak got lazy with animations and now instead of cool snapshots of pokemon mid attack for their battle sprite, they're all basically just t-posing.
>>
>>743783549
that's great but OP wasn't asking when pokemon stopped being good they asked when it lost it's soul. all the additions gen 3 and beyond were extremely safe. somewhere in between
>we want to rush job a bug fighting simulator RPG that relies mechanically on a link cable feature for an end of life handheld
and
>here's this generations glitch filled slop heap
pokemon lost it's soul and i believe that time to be right around when gen 3 was released.

>in terms of pokemon designs
Gens 1-2 have the best designs in a objective sense. Gen 3 was the first 90 degree turn, some bangers but a few duds. Gen 4 had many bangers and was very fan servicey. Gen 5 was when they did another 90 degree turn and its been this dogshit 2020s cartoon network quirk chungus art style since. I cant remember the names of a quarter of the regional dexes gen 5 and up. Gens 5-9 have a handful of good designs among a mountain of trash.
>in terms of games
The jump from DS era to 3DS era. Good lord, the nosedive in quality and soul was so bad that to this day they are still trying to climb out of the pit.

Gen 3 is what turned every single Pokemon story into Legendary slop but at least the legendaries in gen 3 were interesting. Drought and drizzle were absurdly powerful abilities that made you buy into the hype.
Then gen 4 tries to get me to believe that the coffee table, the penis and the buttplug are powerful Pokemon when their ability is fucking pressure. Not to mention how slow the whole game is. Forget the HP bars, even simply selecting moves has an awkward half second delay that gen 3 didn't have. Gen 4 is the only pre-3d gen I never replay because it just feels like pulling teeth the whole time.

Everyone that complains about 3D pokemon only plays Showdown.
Showdown just has the 3D model at the exact angle you see here >>743784115
There are no other animations on Showdown. That means no
>entrance animation
>fainting animation
>attack animations
>idle animation
3D pokemon is harder to emulate so that further feeds into the problem of no one knowing what it actually looks like.
If someone unironically tries to argue the sprites are better you're probably dealing with a moron. Unless he's a Gen 2 bro of course, Gen 2 has the best artstyle.
>>
>>743785508
Nah, Showdown is the only thing that makes those models bearable to look at because every 3D Pokemon game runs at like 5 FPS whenever anything even remotely interesting happens.

Still my favorite gen.
Giving g/s/c crap for it being a sequel to r/b/y is a really funny (retarded) argument.
Personally D/P/Pt is what i'd consider the gen with the most shitmons added. Remove the babies from gen 2 and nothing happens, remove the evolution from gen 4 and a huge chunk of the games pokemon need to be replaced.

have you seen the gen 1 fire / blue sprites? they are cursed.
>>
>>743783074
Pretty much this.
3D itself isn't bad, but good 3D is expensive and hard to make.
Nintendo/Gamefreak loves to cut corners and they know they can get away with it, so the characters all look like made by someone who has just finished doing a youtube Blender tutorial playlist for begginers.

And I'm talking just about the models, don't even get me started on the animations and God forbid the actual game/rendering engine.
>>
>>743782698
It was when they introduced sky battles and every flying type needed to be hovering off the ground. And those awful poses have been lingering in the game ever since.
>>
>>743785871
Lucario alone mogs the shit out of all of Gen II.
>Remove the babies from Gen II but not the evolutions
Nice try, kiddo. Gen II's most popular Pokemon is a baby. Take that away and you'll lose Gen II's star player.
>>
>>743786076
I would accept if the 3d move animations were like the 2d ones - they do a little animation that interacts with the models a bit, but otherwise are their own standalone things. Making pokemon move around and rotate with no actual animations is like some twisted monkey paw middle ground where the intention was to make battling look as bad as possible

I know it sounds petty as fuck and people really try to downplay it but Dexit killed the series for me. Why the fuck can't I obtain all my favorite Pokemon and assemble my true dream team anymore?
I really thought these games would be updated to add in all the Pokemon, only to look up Scarlet and Violet's roster and I can't use Absol or Starmie still? Even though they're not in ZA? Where's my god damn Togekiss, why is he still completely missing?

People post spscific gens when the reality is they lost it little by little. It started from III with certain designs (inclusind overall aesthethics) , IV with shitty pandering, V with terrible designs (though admittedly this is the last Gen they gave a shit) VI on everything else. VII tried to salvage things a bit but it ended up being 1 step forward 2 steps back. VIII is irredeemable and undeniable proof this franchise will remain shit forever, completely unsalvageable. As for IX who cares, after VIII if you're still playing it's out of masochism.

Sad thing is that they had a framework to work from to transition to 3D: emulate Sugimori's art style. 3D Pokemon looks so weird because the Pokemon mesh so much with the characters and world. The entire setting was supposed to be chunky (but not that Godawful chibi style of BDSP) and thus harmonizing the aesthetic of the game. They didnt even attempt to match Sugimori's art style and now the characters are lanklet androgynites with Pokemon that look like balloons with arms that just dangle out of their bodies.
Look at how cool Tyranitar looks in this drawing compared to its 3D model. It's just bizarre since Sugimori's artstyle was one of the most striking things about the series.
