If you're a gamer, here is some etiquette you guys really need to learn.

>Stop refunding games because they're short.
Short games have a place in the market. Not every game needs to be a 1000h time-waster.
Some games are at their best when they're only a couple of hours long.
The refund culture is insanely toxic and makes it difficult to make short story games.

>You are not owed an update for a fully released game.
Developers are not obligated to dedicate their life to someone who paid $6 for a video game once.
We have to move on to the next game to make end's meet.

>Don't complain about optimization if you have a potato PC.
Modern games are made to ship as fast as possible. The downside of a game taking 1 year to release instead of 4 years, is that the game's performance is going to suffer.
If you have a potato PC, you have no right to complain about anything. It is on YOU to upgrade your hardware.

>Stop comparing game prices.
Yes, Terraria is cheap. But it can afford to be cheap because it has an insanely high number of sales. The developer is set for life.
Don't complain that a game with a 10th of the content of Terraria costs more than Terraria. It's unfair.

>Don't pretend we're rich
Most of us take home about just above a third of our gross profits.
Let's say we made $10,000 in a month. Sounds great, right?
However, if you factor in Steam's cut, sale's tax, publisher's cut, income tax, you'll likely be left with around $3,500.

>Don't complain about DLCs being "essential to the base game"
Take RimWorld, for example. Game made it to 1.0 with overwhelmingly positive reviews and no DLC.
Years later, with DLCs like Biotech out, people have started to pretend that DLC is required to 'fully enjoy' the game and that 'essentials are missing from the base game'.
I am sorry, but these DLCs didn't exist before and the game was just as popular and well-recieved then. You are full of shit.

What do you mean we don't have a right to complain about game optimization? This is one of the most important things when it comes to game development.
Look at Deltarune chapter 3 & 4, the game is so poorly optimized that C3-4 still has C1 assets in the game files even if they're ununsed. And the game is locked to 30 FPS. We have a right to complain about these things.

>This is one of the most important things when it comes to game development.
Obsessing over optimization in 2026 is a huge noob trap.
The most important part of game development is rapid prototyping and creating a maintainable code base that you can procedurally add features to.
Optimization is a distant third in terms of importance and possibly the biggest time-waster of game development ever.
If you want to wait an additional year inbetween each chapter release, be my guest.

As a game developer, I need to push back hard on most of these points—because they're bad for players AND bad for the industry long-term. Here's why:

---

On refunding short games:
Refunds aren't killing short games—pricing transparency is. If you charge $60 for a 2-hour experience without disclosing that, refunds are the only check on that. Short games thrive when they're priced honestly (e.g., Journey, Untitled Goose Game). Blaming refunds for your failed launch is misdirected—players refund because they felt misled, not because games are short.

On updates:
You're right that you're not obligated, but players aren't wrong to expect bug fixes for a product they bought. "Fully released" doesn't mean "broken." If you ship with game-breaking issues and abandon it, that's not "moving on"—that's abandonware. Players remember that.

On optimization:
This is just wrong. "Ship fast" is a business choice, not an inevitability. Indie devs optimize beautifully on shoestring budgets. Telling players to "upgrade" ignores that the same PC ran last year's games fine—this year's unoptimized mess is on you, not them. "Potato PC" is classist and lazy.

On pricing comparisons:
Terraria's success doesn't invalidate value comparisons. Players compare value per dollar—that's rational. If your game has 1/10th the content, price it accordingly or market it differently. Complaining that consumers notice value is anti-consumer.

On dev income:
Yes, gross ≠ net. But that's true for every business—and players know this. The solution isn't guilt-tripping them; it's pricing sustainably and being upfront about costs. Players aren't your accountants.

On DLC:
RimWorld was complete at 1.0—true. But when DLC adds core mechanical depth that feels missing on replay, players aren't "full of shit"—they're reacting to design evolution. If Biotech feels essential, that means you made great DLC—but also that you shifted expectations. Own it, don't gaslight your fans.

Actual gamedev here.
I love making vidyagaems.
I mostly make freeware because I dont care if you pirate it and I have an actual dayjob that keeps me from starving.
Ive been maintaining one of my games for almost 20 years and Im tickled that there are still people who actively play it.
Short games should always just be free or so cheap that it'd take more effort than its worth to request a refund.
Never pay more than 20 dollars for a videogame. I don't care if inflation changes how much that statement held in 1990's context, 20 bux is 20 bux.
I am otherwise invisible, you will never see me on social media websites and the rare times I do pop up you wouldnt be able to connect my dev accounts to any personal accounts.
>>
>>743953364
Yeah I'd prefer they pirate, but if the experience ends and the player doesn't see any reason to keep the game (or actively thinks it's dogshit) then they should 100% refund. It just means it didn't work out with that customer
>>743953342
The dev payout window being larger than the refund window covers this. Like Steamworks mentions that the March 30th payout covers the sales for February (https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/finance/payments_salesreporting/faq)
So for a dev there is no cost, the credit and debit will perfectly cancel each other out before you would ever get paid for that unit. Valve eats the associated chargeback costs, but there can be an issue if you're paying for any hosted servers (like Zomboid had an issue with)

>Gamedev is not just a side-hobby. Solo developers genuinely have to invest more than 8 hours every single day to get anywhere.
You're not beholden to time constraints because you're not doing it to survive retard. Also you can get a lot done on the side. If I can make a fully fledged 3d engine with physics and voxel destruction in a week from scratch, there's no reason you can't have a fully working game in a year.
Not to mention, the 40h/week is my minimum. I usually pull 60h/week. And when I take a week off from work like I did last week I can easily dump 140h into whatever Im doing.
>>
>>743954196
>If Biotech feels essential, that means you made great DLC—but also that you shifted expectations. Own it, don't gaslight your fans.
I quit on that dogshit game after Ideology, but I distinctly remember that Rimworld had explicit lore about genetic modifications and different human subspecies as a result of it and designer mates and furfags and everything else. It felt weird as fuck that not a single such specimen ever survived a trip or a crash landing on a rimworld considering ours had an occasional wealthy aristocrat even before that psyker garbage.
Fast forward to today and the core part of the world is sold separately by the greediest kike in the entire indie scene. One man Paradox.

Losing sales is not losing money. When someone buys my game and refunds it, I'm at net zero while Valve is not. It is not worth my money..

If you refuse to patch your game. I will tell internet your game is not worth buying because the devs refuse to support their product.

I kinda of agree. If you were a good developer your game would be optimized well enough to run my potato.

I will judge the value of DLC on a case by case basis. If you lock too much content behind dlc that frankly should have been in the base game. Especially if you launch a game with the dlc as separate entity to inflate the value of your game. Then we have a fucking problem.

>I'M A COONSOOMER AND IF YOU AREN'T LIKE MEN THEN YOUR BAD!'
Gotcha and no, people who refund only do it out of spite for something. Lets just leave steam out of the picture for a moment and look at it from a broader perspective.

The only people who ever bother going back with items to stores for a refund or trade have to overcome the following mental hurdles first:
>They need to think about if it's worth their effort/time to go back to the store and dealing with them again instead of just throwing the item away
>Once they do, they need to weigh the costs in time and money that it would take them to get there and calculate how much of a return they would get
>Lastly, they need to make a new choice on what to buy again and our brains HATE indecision
Sure, steam is a bit different since the barrier for a refund is a LOT smaller unless you consider the fact that steam can just straight up ban you from ever doing refunds again if they think your abusing the system and as an absolute worst case scenario they can outright ban your account or delete it entierly.

So, with this in mind you'd have to do something to REALLY piss your customers (players) off in order for them to go through the effort of refunding and yeah, there are nutcases everywhere so they might be pissed off at a hat being the wrong color or whatever but they are a tiny minority of any human population and both normal stores and Steam has plenty of safeguards that they have either set up themselves or that the government has set up for them in order to protect from edge cases like that.

>RE: Stop refunding games because they're short.
That's just common sense. The only people who refund short games are clearly those with bad intentions.

>RE: You are not owed an update for a fully released game.
I agree, but I also think that with that mentality, developers should open-source their game's code so that anyone who wants to can create fan-made versions of it and give back to the community.
That's why Doom mods are still a thing more than 30 years later.

>RE: Don't complain about optimization if you have a potato PC.
It depends. There are games that look like PS2-PS3 titles and, for some reason, consume a lot of resources.
Yes, it can be optimized, and system resource usage can be reduced.

>RE: Stop comparing game prices.
No. The fact that the game costs $20 and is better than a AAA game priced at $70–80 is not even a comparison, it's a reflection of the problems in the industry and the poor treatment of consumers.

>RE: Don't pretend we're rich.
It is your responsibility to use the resources you have in the most optimal way possible. I have seen a thousand and one games that burn money in production or completely restart development from scratch.
You don’t have infinite money, but you have the obligation to manage it properly.

>RE: Don't complain about DLCs being "essential to the base game".
DLCs should be additional content that in no way affects the game's story or the overall experience. If you sell a game with mandatory DLC required to fully enjoy the complete experience, you are morally deceiving the consumer.

We are unfortunately stuck in a perpetual war against spiteful gamers, largely because you lot are very immature.

>>743956438
>but I also think that with that mentality, developers should open-source their game's code so that anyone who wants to can create fan-made versions of it and give back to the community.
Open-sourcing my game implies that anyone could just build their own instance and put it up online, thus cutting off a significant portion of my revenue.

>There are games that look like PS2-PS3 titles and, for some reason, consume a lot of resources.
Graphics are totally irrelevant to performance in indie games.
It's usually bottlenecks in your code that chug your CPU.

>Yes, it can be optimized, and system resource usage can be reduced.
That's... largely irrelevant, considering we're talking about development time vs. performance.
Ideally we live off of UBI and have unlimited time to develop our dream games, but that's not the reality we live in.

>The fact that the game costs $20 and is better than a AAA game priced at $70–80 is not even a comparison,
"better" is subjective. Movie games are not strictly inferior to gameplay games in an objective sense. Some people just prefer one over the other, and one of them costs more to produce.

>DLCs should be additional content that in no way affects the game's story or the overall experience.
That's your unsubstantiated opinion. RimWorld was feature complete before DLCs.

Terraria is hugely popular, which is why it can afford to stay at a low price tag and work on free updates.
>>
>>743957040
>spiteful gamers
and you are a spiteful dev, it's very obvious from what you wrote. why are you even making games in the first place? you don't have to, there's like 1000 games a day coming out on steam anyway, we have a bunch of stuff to play.
1$ per hour of quality game is still how I make my purchase decisions. if you can't match that, that's a you issue. there are a ton of games that do. I won't refund a 2$ game with a 2$ runtime. I will if it's substantially more expensive than that.
you want to know the reality? saying video games as an industry is oversaturated is very far off the mark. 99.9% of games literally do not need to be made and add nothing to the medium. This is quite simply seen in the amount of games that are top like 0.1% in sales if they sell 100 copies.
unless you make the game for your own personal enjoyment, it's a fruitless endeavor.

Because those "games" end up to be stupid propaganda simulators where the dev just wants to vent about their personal life or politics. They care little about the actual game itself, it's just a vehicle to cry about drumph or something.

>Terraria is hugely popular, which is why it can afford to stay at a low price tag and work on free updates.

>there's like 1000 games a day coming out on steam anyway
It's about 50 (commercial) games per day. On some days, that number is closer to 20.
There are patterns to game releases.
I literally document Steam releases every single day.

>This is quite simply seen in the amount of games that are top like 0.1% in sales if they sell 100 copies.

>Tell me why you motherfuckers are making PS1-era low-poly shit with hardly anything going on in the game, but it can't keep a consistent framerate on modern hardware?
Graphics hardly have anything to do with performance in indie games, anymore.

We use general-purpose engines, workflows and frameworks that aren't close to hardware, meaning we aren't making the same optimizations that people in the 90s were making.
This allows solodevs to deliver games that would have taken professional teams 30 years in man hours, in just one or two years, but it also delegates most of the shortcuts to your CPU.

Some developers however just make very obvious mistakes that don't make any sense in the engine they're using, creating unnecessary bottlenecks for themselves.
If a game fails to run smoothly on modern hardware, it's usually because they're an amateur at software development and aren't making use of all the tools they have available.

>>743960758

Short games have a place in the market. Not every game needs to be a 1000h time-waster.
Some games are at their best when they're only a couple of hours long.
The refund culture is insanely toxic and makes it difficult to make short story games

No, the problem with so many "short games" is that theyre short and there's no replay value, yeah you're right about 100 hr time wasters but at least you could actually get value of those, where as short games, you beat em in like 7 hours and there's nothing about it that could entice you to replay it again unless you wait like 3 years. Game devs who make short games, need to actually make good short games that you could actually beat several times without being bored of the mechanics

Just going to re-itterate my statement again. You have enough time in the day to work on a game after working full time. Many gamedeveloprs start this way. I'm a game developer and whenever someone sends me an email (rarely but this happens) about something that doesn't work or if there's a crash in one of my game I apologize and try to see if I can fix it immediately. If not, I tell them to get a refund and send them a code (in case I do fix it in the future).

>Yes, Terraria is cheap. But it can afford to be cheap because it has an insanely high number of sales.
And why does it have a high number of sales? Because it is a good game. Make your game good, simple as. If you can't make a good product, you don't deserve anyone's money. The customer alone decides what your game is worth to them. Not you. Nobody ows you money.

>You are not owed an update for a fully released game.
Well, if you slap "1.0" onto your game despite it being an unfinished buggy fucking mess, that's on you. Customers deserve a finished, working product, that's what they pay for. So yes, you owe it to them.

>Don't complain about optimization if you have a potato PC.
>Modern games are made to ship as fast as possible
I never asked for fast shipping games. Your your publishers and shareholders are to blame for that, I don't care about your shareholders, you do. Besides, most of the time when a games optimiziation is being critizized, it is because it runs like shit even on high end hardware. This is inexcusable and falls under "selling an unfinished product".

>Don't pretend we're rich
You could be, if you made a good game, lol

>Don't complain about DLCs being "essential to the base game"
Fair. Even then, there are publishers that employ cancerous DLC-politics with their games (looking at you, paradox).

>Stop refunding games because they're short.
If I know beforehand it is going to be short and buy it anyways, fair.
If I cannot know beforehand and the pricing suggests a longer/bigger game, then I am going to refund if my expectations aren't met.
>>
>>743952389

>Stop refunding short games
I only refund a short game if it feels so short that I didn't even get my money's worth. Superhot? Worth it. Katana Zero? Not worth it, this fucking game has been half-complete for almost a decade, but that was my fault for thinking it wouldn't take 8+ years to get a release date.
>You are not owed an update for a fully released game.
What are you talking about? Gimme some specifics, I've never seen a game where people complained that it EOS'd after its full release. If anything, people want games like Terraria to stop getting final updates.
>Don't complain about optimization if you have a potato PC.
Doesn't apply to me. I've got high-end specs and I need fucking DLSS to run games at medium quality (foliage lowest settings) with 60 fps? Fuck that, fuck you, fix your shit.
>Stop comparing game prices.
Video games are worth what someone is willing to pay for them. I never paid full price for Superhot because I could tell right away it was not worth $25. I was correct. $15 is a reasonable price for that game. Silksong was $20, and it was definitely worth that price.
>Don't pretend we're rich
I don't, but I'm speaking for myself.
>Don't complain about DLCs being "essential to the base game"
There's a difference between a DLC adding on to a game in a meaningful way, and games that are bare-fucking-bones without the DLC. If you play Payday 2 with no DLC, you are not playing the same game everyone else is playing. If you play Gunfire Reborn or Vermintide without any of the DLCs, you're not gimped for not having bought the additional characters or alt-skins.

>Stop refunding games because they're short
If a game does not mention being short and catches a customer off guard by being a literal appetizer for an hour that was spent mostly in menu/walking, then yes, the customer is entitled to a refund, even if solely on the basis being deceived

>You are not owed an update for a fully released game
If the game is broken, I'd say the customer is owed a working product

>Don't complain about optimization if you have a potato PC
Fair, but if a game is runs like shit even on decent hardware, then obviously we have a problem

>Stop comparing game prices
Why not? if a developer thinks they're entitled to ask triple A prices for a game they spent maybe 6-20 months making, they're the one who is mistaken, not the customer

>Don't pretend we're rich
No one pretends you're rich unless you created a hit game

Cool, okay. Then how about this:

>Stop complaining to the gamers about how "gamers are the worst and most toxic people"
Toxicity weeds out shitty low-effort garbage games that are no different than all the others out there. Yours isn't special just because you put effort into it. If it were special, then it'd be a hit, and it certainly isn't our fault if your game didn't sell well.

>Don't sell incomplete or bug ridden products
If a game REQUIRES patches to make the game less of a pain in the ass, less obtuse, less confusing, or less buggy, then you as a developer didn't do enough to ensure a quality product was being made. If others shit on it because of this, then that is entirely on you.

>Don't complain when people's jaws drop when a game is many times larger than it has any right to be, or uses many times more resources similar games of yesteryear did not.
This one is self-explanatory, but as an example, if a game like Valheim runs like shit on a computer that has little issues running Helldivers 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, or [insert low performance newish game here] then that isn't a fault of the consumer, it is a fault of the developer for not cutting down on woefully inefficient code, memory leaks, uncompressed bitmaps, etc. If it runs like shit, it usually IS the developers fault as most gamers do indeed have rigs that can handle quite a bit.

>Stop whining when gamers complain the games price isn't in line with its perceived value
Terraria is cheap because it always has been cheap. It never went out of its way to squeeze the consumer out of more money, and it gained good faith in turn. You aren't the devs of Terraria, and you aren't entitled to their success/profits.

>Don't pretend we're rich either
Most of us will happily buy a game if we think it's worth it, you just have to show us it is. If you can't, we wont. We got bills to pay too.

>Don't complain when we call your game cancer when you cut content to pad your wallet
Simple as that.
>>
>>743952389

cute pic, i personally don't refund short games. But I think telling /v/ not to do something just makes them act selfishly out of spite.
>Don't complain about optimization if you have a potato PC
This one is disagree with. Too many games these days are bloated optimized trash. It makes sense if you're playing a game with realistic graphics on ultra but:
1: Let's be real, the poor optimization problem isn't simply down to games getting "more advanced", advancement is slower than ever, improvements are minimal and aren't enough to explain the large drop in performance. In AAA this is usually because of tight deadlines and corner cutting by the higher ups. And now with the skyrocket in hardware price, your game either has to optimize or fail, sink or swim. You can't expect the average working class person to drop thousands of dollars just to play your jank.
>Don't pretend we're rich
Neither is the average consumer, that's why we prefer cheap things.
>Don't complain about DLCs being "essential to the base game"
It's true that you don't need DLC to enjoy the game. But the problem is that games often put the best items in the DLC and this is particularly frustrating when it relates to multiplayer. Dark Souls 3 has pay2win rings that you need the DLC to unlock, which are just objectively better versions of the rings in the base game. DLC should ideally try not to powercreep the player beyond what is possible in the base game.

I live in an apartment building with all my staff, the studio bought the apartment building, top is just staff apartments bottom is our floor then lower are tenants that didn't want to move.

We pay like half the pay due a quater going accommodation, water and power being taken from salary most of our staff have been with us for the last 4 years, even CEO lives in the apartments, there is a hallway between all the apartments but it's more like an office power cables and network cables running and server racks.

Everyone get's paid roughly the same amount there's about 30 dollar difference between CEO and management, doubling of jobs eg receptionist is common and get paid for doing that job on top of their duty.

>Short games have a place in the market. Not every game needs to be a 1000h time-waster. Some games are at their best when they're only a couple of hours long. The refund culture is insanely toxic and makes it difficult to make short story games.
Gamers don't care unfortunately. They think that quantity > quality and it is why they love live service games and why they post steam charts.

NES games like Air Fortress and Zelda 1 were designed tediously because devs realized early on that gamers love to nickle and dime creatives (via rentals) of appreciating their experience for what it is.

You have to design a new game+, have dead/bad ends that make them start from the beginning, or have a initial bad ending that will force people to play the entire game. A lot of early story based adventure games had you killed instantly and forced you to start over

>make her fully modeled, without any cut meshes under clothes
>give her a ridiculously complex skeleton, even if it's not fully used by ingame animations
>add an easy mod support for model and animation swaps
>release the sources for base model of the girl to the community
And there you go, it will instantly become very popular. It's simple as that. I have no idea why is it so hard for devs to understand.

Nice bait

>Stop refunding games because they're short.
Not encouraging market for that shit

>You are not owed an update for a fully released game.
By that logic we are not owed update after the previous one broke a game
Also publishers STOP KILLING GAME motherfucker.

>Don't complain about optimization if you have a potato PC.
It's your public duty if the game should honestly be playable on a potato.
Even on ecologic ground.

>Stop comparing game prices.
It's plain Demand/Offer
Don't overprice your game if it doesn't offer anything worth it.
And I paid €60 for an indy space game that has no chance of making it big.

>Don't pretend we're rich
Never did,
Just don't complain about Steam 30% cut when they provide you services you that you'd fail to get spending 80% of your money in.

>>Don't complain about DLCs being "essential to the base game"
If your DLC is a disguised Day-1 DLC "cough the money or you won't see the ending/true feature" we can complain.

Who care what about people say?
Besides, Rimworld is among the rare game that NEVER GO ON SALES, making you a DLC at essentially the price of the base game.

>No. The fact that the game costs $20 and is better than a AAA game priced at $70–80 is not even a comparison, it's a reflection of the problems in the industry and the poor treatment of consumers.
>better
Define "better"
You can get a lot of fun from a cheap $20 pixel-art game, but it cannot replace a need for a 3D open-world with realistic weather, physical combat & climbing animations with voice acting.
Then the question is how many people can pay $80 to make it worth the development time.

I don't have the skills to comment on optimization, but if your game look like shit and run poorly for a player who is used to better optimized game, that's a legit complaint.

If the extra processing cost come from good/useful physics or AIs, all is forgiven, question is whether player can tell.

M8y if this isn't bait/bot you have to realize that you're basically a jester. A form of entertainment for consumers. The LAST thing you want to do is give ultimatums like "Dont like it? Do something else." Or "Just watch porn!" People will actually do so. Devs in this industry need to stop doing this. Jesus fucking Christ.

Never bought it in the first place. Games are free, after all.

Just make a finished, reasonably balanced game with no major bugs and there won't be any issues.
Also I don't care about how much money devs make, they only exist to slave away 24/7 so I can enjoy the free, high-quality video games they produce.

An actual fair point except when release is so sloppy compared to an older game that the feature being said to have been essential as part of the base is clearly justified.

The reason why people are miserable and desperate right, crying our load complaining about the problems they themself created is because of the exact mentality you describe. You're not owed my money or respect.
I'm going to complain about any shortcoming you have. That includes optimization. I don't give a FUCK what constraints your game was made under.
No.
Not my problem.
Base Rimworld needed mods to feel complete, and the areas DLCs operate in are areas that older mods no longer fill the vacuum in because they stop getting updated. Android Tiers was much more fun than the DLC that added similar content.
