I dunno how it is in modern SS13 but the whole "upgrading machines to make them better" by just waiting for miners to return from one trip and then beaming/hitting things with your upgrade-o-tool like you are engineer from Team Fortress 2 upgrading buildings always rubbed me off the wrong way and borgs are like the only thing where the whole upgrade system thing is sorta well balanced as you need to open their backdoor molestation panel to upgrade them and spend longer than 2 seconds fiddling around.
