From what I gather on game faqs it looks like in Rune Factory 1 crafting xp is just based on the skill level of the recipe so it's a good idea to do a lower level recipe if it's easier to craft, but does it work the same way with later titles? My assumption was that there's some experience reduction for lower level recipes (so I avoided crafting them), but that might not be the case.
