They will never beat Steam if they stay on Steam. In fact by staying on Steam, all they are doing is making sure less people use Windows because of Steam's push for Linux.

Staying on Steam is a suicidal move for short term profits, they really do need to decouple from it but that requires them to make good Windows exclusive games on their storefront that people will want to buy. Something like TES6 comes to mind, assuming they don't fuck it up like Starfield.

>>744516790
But they're also not going to get any converts, no one trusts Microsoft. Steam is pushing for Linux, but most people switching to it are still only doing it because Windows is an unreliable mess.
If they wanted more people to use Windows, then they would open source Windows 7 instead of forcing everyone onto an eternal early-access OS train just because they want to sell data, sell ads and promote vendor lock-in.
>Exclusives
They do not have any of the talent or know-how at the managerial or development level to make a good exclusive game that would yield a positive return on investment. They have bought out a lot of companies, but they have gained nothing of value from that.
>>744518093
Those services undermine themselves. The only way for them to be profitable is to hide costs or to pull a bait-and-switch once they have a captive audience, they are fundamentally less profitable than any other business model when running an honest service.

Are they gonna give up on Game Pass too? Because the only reason why their games sell any copies on PC at all is because some users would rather pay more than have to use a different client. I think they'll see a rise in one-month-then-cancel subscriptions and in pirated downloads but a decrease in revenue.

It appears evident to me that the golden age of PC gaming is coming to an end. The tower of babel is being abandoned with Sony and potentially Microsoft removing their games from Steam.

Now prices for hardware are ridiculous, some games like Tokyo Clanpool aren't even allowed on Steam(but are on GoG), and there is a very real chance that Microsoft starts paying for PC exclusivity on their storefront again. Considering Microsoft's relationship with Sega in recent years where they even snagged the Persona 6 reveal away from Sony, that's a very real concern. There is a non 0% chance that Persona 6 is day and date on PC...on the Windows Store/Game Pass and not Steam.

I'd say it's a repeat of the 2010's launcher wars but this is closer to the Netflix situation where once upon a time everything was on Netflix and then everyone stopped putting their shows and movies on it so now Netflix sucks ass.
>>
>>744522915
As long as they don't fall back on the 360 years where they completely abandoned Windows as a games platform it's fine.

At the end of the day, people use Steam because it's easier than pirating. If Microsoft removes their games from Steam, people will just start pirating them again.

The issue is the microsoft store is BUGGY as fuck and has been for almost a decade, you're either a rage baiting faggot loser or you never played a game on their trash platform.
The last one I played was PSO2 before it finally came to steam and it use to auto delete constantly meaning you had to redownload 85gb every other day.
You search around a bit and you will see tons of old posts talking about it on the internet before we finally could move over to steam and have zero issues.

they also put their games in a weird as fuck folder that has higher privileges than the actual admin on your computer so you can't even open the folder normally without doing some fuckery on your computer

They have already attempted decentralising away from steam back when it was way smaller and its opposition was way bigger and more competent
It fucking failed

Now they stand no chance, people are ideologically attached to steam and they see just how vile the competition is
And the motivator isn't even there, they only stand to gain 43% more revenue at best, less if their game is successful or if they have a deal with steam
This isn't even counting the losses from handling the distribution themselves

GFWL failed because Microsoft was still more interested in chasing after Sony. They have never taken PC seriously, they've been fighting against Sony as their main enemy the entire time. But now Valve has become an actual threat, when Nvidia cards are able to use SteamOS next year, you will have more gamers ditching Windows for it. Windows is already behind Android and iOS for usage, if Microsoft loses the PC audience then that's terrible for them and it's their own doing. Their CEO pushed Office products on Mac and Microsoft games on Playstation/Steam. They could have easily put all their games on Bnet instead since that has people willing to use it thanks to WoW Diablo and Overwatch.

You can play all their games on Linux. You can use all the work apps on Mac. There is no point to Windows unless they change something up.
>>
>>744523619
>far more consumer friendly options built in.
Valve was forced into being ""consumer friendly"" by regulatory bodies for like 2 decades after its existence. Refunding games wasn't a thing until 2015 and that was also the year they had plans of paid mods until they backed away
>>

The comparison was with everything being on Netflix like how everything was on Steam these past few years. But then everything left Netflix and people left Netflix as a result, it's still the most popular streaming service but people went back to piracy instead.

I think it's a fairly apropos comparison, if games leave Steam then people leave Steam and return to piracy.

if playstation and xbox want to make their own store then they should make a working emulator for ps3 and xbox360 then release a game per week for 10 euros
but they won't because they are retarded (see sony and bloodborn, would be useless to release it on pc now since the emulator is working good)
so they won't, rpcs3 and xenia will get better and better

>>
>>744523953
You are genuinely fucking retarded if you can't create a good analogy. Buying something that stays forever in a digital account is wildly different to paying for a subscription that expires, locks your content away and said content might leave the platform entirely
The most accurate analogy is the Xbox Gamepass & PS+ Premium catalog but you're obviously too fucking stupid to string that together.
I don't give a fuck if my games are spread between Steam & GoG for obvious reasons.

>we'll just wait it out or ignore the games like we always do
If Persona 6 or TES6 were Windows Store exclusive, people aren't waiting. They are pirating or buying a month of Game Pass. There are games that are big enough where people don't care. Overwatch was one, it was mega popular without being on Steam. Valorant was another, and you have tons of popular gacha games that have their own PC launchers(Mihoyo's being the biggest). If GTA6 wasn't on Steam it would not make a difference because people would be lining up to play it.

>>744524114
It's about the consumer reaction. The end result is less people using Steam and just pirating games(more relevant than ever now that Denuvo is dead), much like how people stopped using Netflix and started pirating everything instead. People stick to 1 place when it has everything due to convenience, when that convenience is lost they resort back to piracy.
>>
>>744522915
ubisoft tried and failed (uplay)
EA tried and failed (origin)
overwatch is on steam
Epic tried to buy exclusivity, peoples waited and treated the steam release as the real release (Hades)
Microsoft already failed, twice (windowstore and GameForWindowsLive)
Amazon tried and failed (luna)
Google tried and failed (stadia)
alternative only work if you sell something different like dlsite, mangagamer, JAST ect... (and still, you can get the game on steam, just need to apply a +18 patch) or true indies like itchio
if it's just "one editor will make his own buggy store" it will fail, epic was just a launch fornite button and pc isn't where they make the most money

jibber jabber with no substance. You think everyone has OCD like you do and needs every game on 1 platform.
>The end result is less people using Steam and just pirating games
You're a moron if GoG or Microsoft made you pirate games instead of just pirating them already.
>much like how people stopped using Netflix and started pirating everything instead
People did that because Netflix has increased their prices, worsened their originals and the few good ones it has are not worth paying an additional amount on top of HBO or Apple TV
>People stick to 1 place when it has everything due to convenience
brownoid cope. There is nothing "inconvenient" in the modern age where switching between 2 apps or websites takes 1 second.
>when that convenience is lost they resort back to piracy.
No they don't.

>Genuinely kill yourself if you still can't comprehend why people don't want multiple Streaming services or how they're different to gaming.
I think you should follow your own advice here if you're too retarded to understand why EGS failed despite giving out a plethora of free games and buying up exclusivity for titles like Hades, Outer Wilds, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, and more. The first 2 only got popular after the Steam release because no one wanted to download EGS. People won't even switch to a new platform for free games right now because they have everything under one roof, in fact games being given out for free on EGS end up with those games getting sales boosts on Steam that same day. It sounds absurd but that is reality.

It wouldn't be the first time. Remember how that went by the way? Here's the thing about trust: when you constantly break it all the time, people move on and find or create something better. Microsoft lost a lot of trust many years ago with gamers because of Games for Windows Live and completely abandoning PC gaming for consoles. Hell, that's one of the reasons why Steam exists in the first place. I remember many years ago when you couldn't even get things like the Gears of War sequel because they made it exclusive to consoles. Now, maybe you'll get fanboys to move over and get the shiny new Elder Scrolls on whatever thing Microsoft try to shift to, but if it's anything like Starfield, well...good luck with that. Even if it is somehow successful, what else does Microsoft have? I'm certainly not going to give up Steam for the games they have, and honestly, after Starfield, I could give less of a shit about Elder Scrolls quite frankly.

The thing is even if a Launcher that came out that was just like Steam down to the store being the same people still wouldn't jump ship because nobody is going to switch to another platform because people Steam accounts are very well established for the most part, with some people having accounts that are over 20 years old including libraries that go back that far. This is why nobody will ever be able to compete with Steam. Microsoft knows this because that was exactly what fucked over Xbox during Xbox One since Microsoft lost the digital sale space for consoles right when digital sales for consoles were becoming a normal thing. One of the main ideas of Gamepass was to try and entice people to jump ship by giving them a library to start with but we all saw how that went.

Because they're mass produced
Economy of scale
>>
>>744516117
As a former Steamie (well current Steamie as I still possess a PC and play Steam games on it), I put this down to the fact that PC gaming is so obnoxious that having to have manage multiple libraries on different storefronts on the same machine completely ruins the convenience for them. The Steam client functions like a console in respect to it's UI, even when you're using a mouse and keyboard it's nice to have one hub to access your whole library. Having another library adds a completely unnecessary task. A lot of Steam users are console players at heart, I know because I am one.

It actually isn't, not by law anyway. They get you on cybercrime like that with charges like fraud, identity falsification and money laundering. Theft (larceny) in legal definitions does require a physical property to be removed from the possession of one person to another, shit like copyright violation is treated differently as a result. It's just easier to tell the laymen that it's stealing because going over the specifics of legal code is an exercise in frustration and they won't retain the information anyway, and wouldn't get any use out of knowing it if they did retain it.

>>744534060
Gates didn't have foresight, back in the 90s he was just an autist brute forcing his competition out of the way and the government didn't bother trying to stop him because they wanted Microsoft to dominate globally. It was actually relatively easy to scam Billy boy out of millions of dollars by making tech startups and selling people on an idea that maybe, probably, perhaps could threaten Microsoft's market dominance at some point, you didn't even have to have anything concrete, Gates would gatecrash the party anyway and buy you out because he couldn't take the risk and had the money to burn thanks to government subsidy.

It's quite similar to indians forming AI startups by the dozens in hopes of attracting investment.

I unironically see a decent chance that Microsoft becomes a has-been brand that's treading water over the next decade. They've been steadily losing ground on almost everything for the past 20 years. We just need an OS that significantly eats into their market share, and people are working on that.

The reason why they're cutting Xbox like crazy is because they have so many holes in their ship that it's becoming a legitimate threat to them.
>>
>>744539718
>We just need an OS that significantly eats into their market share
Yeah bro im sure youll beat a trillion dollar company with linux
>>
Weren't PC numbers overwhelmingly higher on steam for their last like 5 releases? The only time it ever does better outside of steam is when they put it on game pass where people have to pay essentially nothing.
It was sad pretty explicitly by the grounded team, and the horizon 6 teams right at launch, and even rare said sea of thieves was doing better on steam than xbox and battlenet combined.

Just seems like an odd choice for them to make, honestly. It gives me a real strange feeling that they're going to just yank support for their shit and go back to the awful locked down environment that stopped people from modding.
"we want to focus on minecraft" is like the stupidest fucking thing they could say, they're going to kill it when it's already falling out of popularity. It just needs some time to recuperate like it had before.

>>
>>744516790
Steam is based for doing that, but Windows is like 1% of Microsofts revenue. They rake in money with Azure or other commercial cloud stuff.

"Windows exclusive" can also be achieved by default by making it deliberately difficult or impossible to work on non-windows machines. Compatibility layers only do so much.

>>744519097 is right. In order for this to last they'll have to have enough (good) games to make a difference.

And let's remind ourselves that even EA came crawling back with Battlefield.
>>
>>744516117
I bought dark souls 3 on games for windows live once, then they closed the service and I lost my video game.
same for minecraft, i bought the beta, mohjang did it ported my account, microsoft didn't, they told me they sent an email years ago and they didn't give a shit any more.
both times I've had games stolen by these people.
Then my friends want to play sea of thieves so okay I buy on the windows store it's cheaper, I download some app it's works mostly fine but it's also kinda ass?
I cant really pick where these files download becasue they're locked into my OS in some ways, sometimes the app has sync inssues where i need to relog? and i cant relog becasue it uses some ass process that wont close it self after i close the app.
Steam has never fucked me around like microsoft has man. I really rather not use their storefront at all.
>>
The real reason people people are so attached to steam is because it's genuinely a monopoly by way of having a first mover advantage where people spent money attached to an account so they feel tied to the platform. Social media platforms like Facebook can die overtime because accounts are free and users can migrate to a competing platform, but you already paid all that money on steam and you love and adore Valve so of course you're staying there.
>b-but all the other platforms are garbage
They're garbage because there's no point in trying to compete with a service like steam that's already established and has psychologically locked you in. You know how it's psychological? Because Valve made praising Valve/Gabe and thinking you're getting a good deal on buying games more exciting than playing the fucking games themselves.

>They're garbage because there's no point in trying to compete with a service like steam that's already established and has psychologically locked you in.

Unless they do so via standards, they can't. That's not how the operating system works.
There was a time awhile back, when they were going to force the operating system to use only UWP apps, so everything would be funneled through the microsoft store. it wasn't government or end-users that actually stopped that shit. Developers fucking revolted. All of them. Literally nobody who actually writes software, wanted that shit, and unlike most issues, they actually got off their asses to make sure MS knew it that time.
