I mean I guess in some other games you can get away with having awful equipment, job levels, materia, etc. to an extent by just being massively overleveled, but there's also the X/XII/XIII where you don't even get any stat increases without manually activating them. Which i guess actually is better at getting people to engage with them.Bosses have hard level caps so it's not really a true progression wall anyways, and the whole thing exists so that they can have the party split up and both be playable without either requiring back bench grinding or making everything a total pushover.
