How can we solve the contrarian-midwit epidemic?

Why is it that all of a sudden, everyone and their dog likes to pretend that they're too sophisticated to enjoy games like Elden Ring, RDR2 or the soon to be released GTA6? Why do people pretend that attention to detail is somehow a bad thing, or that good graphics somehow take away from the experience, or that realism should be avoided like the plague? Why do they think that calling something [INSERT GAME MECHANIC]-slop constitutes an argument is any way, shape or form? Why is it always "old is le good," and "new is le bad" with them?

What's to blame for this sudden surge of snobbery? Is it video games essayists? Is it board culture? Or are the Goyim just retarded?

Technically GTA games do have win and lose conditions. It's the act itself that feels empty. That's a vibe problem, and you can't fix a vibe with code

I didn't actually enjoy rdr2 and elden ring. Well I didn't try elden ring but I got talked into 3 soulslikes before and didn't enjoy any of them. Your post seems like projection. Nobody dislikes attention to detail and such. But people dislike getting told to be in awe at the details when the same marketing tone meant that there wasn't any for the last 10 years. And I think that's gta6 problem, it alrdy gets marketed like a upcoming flop. A return to blast. A cultural impact to be studied. But in a 2026 dictionary that means just "shit"

Not caring for GTA6 is fine.
Resorting to demonstrably false claims like "it just looks like GTA5" just to take a dig at "le new popular game" isn't. It ruins video game discussion.

You can't discuss vidya with anyone anymore, you know that they'll just call the game something-slop, or resort to some bad faith bold-claim they themselves don't genuinly believe in.

It's like a mass psychosis.

ER is peak. RDR2 is overhyped slop. GTA6 will likely also be slop. The difference is that ER is a game first and doesn’t try to blind you with graphic fidelity. I played through RDR2 and it’s sickening how it pretends to give you freedom but punishes you when you go off script, and the story it tells only works because every character is brain damaged.

Movie games will always be a thing. It's a genre. You're basically asking for all games to play like souls games, with minimal cutscenes and snappy movement.
If all games were like that, everyone would get burned out of gaming in 2 years max.
RDR2 doesn't let you do whatever you want during missions? Good, it's a narrative focused game. It's basically the video-game equivalent of a 5 season HBO show, in addition to being a pretty neat sandbox (outside of story missions) and a nature/hunting simolator.
This whole "you should be given freedom during story centered missions" lunacy was started by that nigger in pic-rel.

Because things are just getting genuinely worse, uninspired, and stagnant. Majority of AAA games have no passion and soul behind it and the ones that did are no longer being made and there is almost no one taking big risks. I'm tired of playing a clone of another game that is probably worse than what it's copying or brings nothing new to the experience.

we have games like duskbloods with fromsoft making it sound like it's this new risky game idea theu wanted to make but if you really look at it, it's just a very heavily asset reuse lazily thrown together souls pvp party game that will be dead in a month.

The other thing is I used to just play anything but now i only play games that appeal to me greatly. I can look at a game like gta and know it's not for me because I'm not looking for that kind of game to play anymore.
>>
>>745978227
Not a very nuanced take, anon. In certain situations realism can detract from the gameplay experience. People can genuinely dislike it in some cases and consider it a waste of resources.

I also don't think people disliking Elden Ring and people disliking GTA have a big overlap.

I think the new GTA from what we've seen looks fine, there's no reason to expect GTA of all things to bring groundbreaking innovation to the table, and it being rather similar to 5 with some small updated mechanics and the detail do-dads of RDR2 is not a problem at all. It's not deserving of the hype many hold it to, but I don't think it's a worthless pile of shit like some have taken to framing it.

I played Vice City when I was 15. It was fun just driving around a city listening to music and riding off ramps and stuff. I don't know why you'd play a game like that more than once, though. The popularity of RockStar games is pretty interesting to me. I assume it's just because people want to be black.
>>
>>745981018
And you're literally doing the left side of OP's pic right here. Just because he hates GTA doens't mean he hates everything popular. I can't speak for him, but I personally liked popular games like elden ring, bg3, e33, but don't care and never cared for gta. I think rockstar games are games that focus on realism and appearances but have no depth, and I don't see why I should prevent myself from saying it.
>>
>>745978278
I knew the example being given would be the 'slop' part of the OPs point before clicking the image to check. Because that is by far the largest epidemic of what he's talking about and it's not even close. And I agree. Particularly the word slop. It's used to avoid engaging in arguments and is a new form of a free pass to escape an argument by pretending you're above it.

Rockstar will spend years working on minute details in the environment and then forget to create any interesting gameplay mechanics. They'll make damn sure the horses in RDR2 move realistically but then make every mission a straight line and half ass the survival mechanics. Normies don't care about that though because they don't really care about video games. All they want is a spectacle to tune out to.
>>
>>745981546
Okay but robbing the player of any agency during the missions isn't necessary. They could still have their cutscenes and story but let the player use the open world to make their own solutions. NakeyJakey is like a normgroid who miraculously gained sentience and he's 100% correct.
>>
>>745985735
You seem to be regurgitating what everyone's been saying for the last 2-3 years.
Can you give us concrete examples of survival mechanics missing from RDR2, and how the inclusing of the mechanics you suggest would improve the game? (and mind you, this is the game that people complain about for having too many relaism-focused features)
>but then make every mission a straight line
How do you even define a straight line? Can you show us a narrative focused game with missions that can be described as "not a straight line", and then provide examples for why RDR2 falls short of that standard?
Or is RDR2 bad in your eyes just because it's popular?
>>
>>745981546
I'm not that anon and I haven't played RDR so I'm talking out of my ass here.
I agree that linear narrative-focused games are fine (not my style but whatever). But the way these do it (assuming it's similar to the GTA games I have played) is kinda gay, where you're playing an open world sandbox style game but missions railroad you in a way that breaks immersion to an insane degree. If a game wants to be linear then it should be linear, but pick a proper game format for it. Open world sandbox isn't it. "You should be given freedom during story centered missions" isn't an insane expectation in a game that's all about freedom. I think this is why Breath of the Wild resonated with people so much since you really can do whatever you want anytime in that game.
>>
>>745985265
youtube is not the problem, shitjaks are

>>
>>745986092
It has been long established that Rockstar open worlds are sandboxes outside of sotry missions, and linear narrative-focussed games during sotry missions. No one complained when GTA4 did it. No one complained when San Andreas did it. No one complained when RDR1 did it. But since RDR2 is the new, popular, Reddit-approved game, now it's become a problem.

Let's even try to get rid of "mission linearity," what would you suggest? Procedurally generated outcomes to accomodate all possible character actions? Maybe a procedurally generated story?

Souls games can dodge linear gameplay because narrative outcomes aren't decided by the player's mundane gameplay decisions, because they do not adopt a mission-based structure for progression. Rockstar games cannot allow you to do whatever you want during missions because that would require the creation of a procedurally generated story that would accomodate all the crazy shit you'll do during story altering missions. Asking Rockstar open worlds to adopt the same standards as souls games when it comes to freedom of action would be like asking a fish to climb a tree just because the monkey over there can do it too.

Let souls games be souls games, and let Rockstar open world games be what they are. Playing RDR2 is like reading a book, everything's set in stone, and there's nothing wrong with that.

>he hates basedjaks
why? do they strike a nerve?
>>
>>745986087
>jump through all these hoops for me just so I can say you're wrong anyways
The fact of the matter is that RDR2's survival mechanics are so shallow that they might as well not even be in the game. They add nothing to the experience aside from having to make sure a meter is full every now and then. If you genuinely ran out of food at any point in this game you are hopelessly retarded. Hell, you don't even need to make sure you have access to fresh water since the game doesn't account for hydration. Arthur never needs to sleep, meaning he has no real need to make camp unless he needs to cook something (which you don't need to do very often, since food never goes bad lol). I'm not sure who you're talking to, but nobody complains about the game being "realistic", they complain about it being filled with 30 second long unskippable animations for every tiny fucking thing.
>How do you define a straight line?
You cannot solve problems in any other way than the exact series of actions the game developers laid out for you. No, it's not TECHNICALLY a straight line or a hallway but it might as well be. Even then, this guided experience isn't challenging in the slightest. There are no difficulty options, and what's presented is mind numbingly easy. Is that good enough for you?

I agree with that (I play using a hardcore mode mod where Orthur dies in 2 shots, but this is a valid dig to the base game.)
>If you genuinely ran out of food at any point in this game you are hopelessly retarded.
I've run out of healing tonics more than once. Canned foods saved me when I was handging by a thread more than once. And let's not even talks about guarma rum and the deadeye core. Not only that, but the consumable items reflect the culinary culture of the epoch, and of different places depicted in the game. Different saloons serve diferent dished depending the the social status and climate of an area.

Videos like this are the reason why I'll always prefer RDR2 to strightforward, gameplay-focused bing bing wahoo games:
