why did so many 90s titles spend so much time on texturing the UI

and why did we stop doing that

Scott Cawthon is a fucking artist and I refuse to accept anything less than agreeance.

Because games in the 90s were made by nerds who liked videogames and thus put passion into their work.

Now they're made by boomers with mortgages who play 20 minutes of videogames on the weekend if their wife is feeling generous
you think they give a single fuck about UI? Everything looks like an Apple device. Enjoy

Scott's got a very unique vision that was very quickly wasted on derivative FNAF sequels.
I would have loved to see him work as the lead artist for a larger budget game.

Because if they didn't it would look like shit. Look at how much of the fucking screen is taken up by that mess because they couldn't get the game to run at a proper 640x400, so they prettied up the screen hogging UI to make it look cool and immersive.

It's not because "oooh they CARED so much in the past" or "back then they had SOUL" or whatever trite wank nostalgia riddled faggots want to sell you on. They were selling a product and if they didn't put effort into something that dominated the screen, no one would buy the ugly pile of shit.

>why did so many 90s titles spend so much time on texturing the UI
Because it's static. When 60% of your screen is static you clear the headache of having re-render the entire screen for every frame and you reduce filesize by not having to make all of your art assets high enough res to fill the screen. There's lots of reasons to do it but primarily it was done out of necessity, and for a while it was just an industry standard thing to theme your UI around your game. Nowadays everything is just this because the normie is scared of beauty.

>and why did we stop doing that
We shouldn't have, it's a lost art. I'd like to see a modern game bring this sort of style back, I think it'd be incredible. Some games do come out that use it but not often, and it's exclusively in the domain of indie titles.

I think that's a fair thing to say, but I see them shine even in many of the FNAF games. Sister Location is rife with his heavy machine aesthetic. I think when he tries to do his humanoids that look like the buzzsaw toy from Veggietales or the over-the-top designs from FNAF4 he loses the charm, but when he sticks to machines he always delivers.

maybe once in a blue Moon retard, 95% of games are made by millennials and Gen X (people between 30 and 60)

Perihelion is incredibly beautiful. Aeon of Sands was in part inspired by it, though more painterly and fantastical (and also extremely easy)

hardware limitations
game screen had to be smaller for most PCs because of their specs, so they filled the empty space with well designed UIs
and a lot of these games were designed to be playable with mouse only

PC games of the time were usually more complex than their console contemporaries, so the UI had to be bigger to accommodate more information. And if something is taking a significant chuck of the screen, you better make it look good.
>why did we stop doing that
Console gaming became dominant in the 2000s, so its conventions (minimalist HUD and dedicated menus) became the new norm.

Thanks. Is it a hard game to pick up and play? I know that 90s pc rpgs are a real dice roll in regards to that.
