I'm just so fucking tired of every controller being this, unless it's a "retro" controller where it'll be either a tiny SNES or an anorexic 6button Genesis controller.I get it, it's efficient, I don't even inherently hate the fucking things, I have like 4 right next to me ranging from a pair of Xbone controllers to an 8bitdo to a fucking Switch Pro, but every controller now is just an increasingly cheaper feeling, sanded down version of this fucking thing with ergonomics that are just "alright" unless they're like a fight pad or some shit.Like gimme a Wii U pro clone or something at this point with the sticks above the face buttons, at least with that you could work the face buttons with the heel of your thumb without taking them off the sticks. Gimme some more sculpted ergonomics on the shell, fiddle with the face button layout, gimme a Duke style fatass that feels great to hold. Do fucking something, the only rule is 4 shoulders, 4 face, 2 sticks and a D-pad at this point there's plenty you can do with the format that would still be easy to use while not sacrificing personality and ergonomics.I saw some fag earlier call this thing "like a Duke or a gamecube but it's low-t" and I can't fucking unsee it at this point because that's what it is, it's like the fucking domesticated version of a controller, the android smartphone equivalent for the technology, there's no interest in trying to evolve or even just fiddle with the fine details to see if you can make it work better it's just a lazy bare minimum..>what about dualshockrarer but I'm also tired of clones of that, just less so.At this rate I'd unironically take a revamped Jaguar Pro they slapped another pair of shoulders and dual analogs on just to have something with some fucking personality at this point.
you can try one of those retarded controllers where you can swap out the button placements
>>746082397I'm still using my PS3 controller and I will use it until it breaks down.
>>746082556They're kinda just the same exact thing. You can't do anything dramatic like put the sticks up or have a gamecube style layout, just swap the D-pad/face buttons for handedness or plug in some gay little retro gadget like a paddle wheel. I guess if I could find one where you could use trackballs instead of sticks that'd at least be kinda fucking novel to fuck with, but good luck.>>746082558I miss the old Dualshock 1 and 2 analogs, so fucking chunky and tactile. Still maintain that the DS1 analogs are probably damn near the best ever made for some godfuck reason in terms of precision feedback.
>>746082397Im on my second one of these controllers and the same button is sticking again, along with the grip peeling off.Ill go for chinkshit next time
>>746082397>Like gimme a Wii U pro clone or something at this point with the sticks above the face buttonsYou and I both know there's a reason why no one copies this.People do experiment like with the Tarantula for example, but there's a reason why everyone copies the Xbox style: Because it works. It's why you don't see the Playstation style as much because people prefer left stick up top, right stick on bottom.>there's plenty you can do with the format that would still be easy to use while not sacrificing personality and ergonomics. No one wants this. We're past the era of slime and chainsaw controllers that just waste everyone's time to try something goofy or different. The standards exists because they have proven themselves to be good. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't be adopting good new standards from these third-party controllers like L5/R5 on the shoulders or the DS4/DualSense touchpad, but there's zero reason to rock the boat like you want. We've tried six buttons: It's too much and requires you to curl your hand unnaturally to hit the new buttons so they effectively act as L3/R3 but near the d-pad.We've tried different layouts like the Gamecube and realized having one big button and side buttons just doesn't really feel that great outside of games explicitly taking that layout into account. We've tried mixing it up like the Wii U Pro Controller: It's awkward and unnatural to have the right stick near the top. We've tried touchpads in place of sticks: It feels like ass and requires heavy tuning to even feel half as good as sticks unless you spend hundreds of hours getting used to their quirks. We've tried nipples on the N3DS: It takes too much effort to actuate and awkwardly places your thumb in a way where it strains you over long periods of usage.Where do you expect to go from here? Even third-parties only really have hotswapping button locations, back buttons, hair triggers, and shoulder buttons as their innovations on controller design.
>>746082865>but near the d-pad.I meant near the face buttons, whoops. We've also tried large controllers like the Duke: It's not ergonomic at all for a lot of people. We've tried slabs with phone controllers and the DS lineup: It feels like ass and cramps your hands. We've tried cranks: It's a gimmick that only works if everyone is on board and typically invalidates the other buttons because you have to crank it.We don't use trackballs because it's already a steep learning curve to begin with using them on a mouse, and on a controller would cramp the meat of your thumb joint to constantly use. It would also make the controller heavier in one direction which they'd have to compensate for making the whole controller heavier as a whole. We don't use curved triggers because the PS3 explicitly showed us how horrific and slippery of an idea that is to the point that if you aren't buying plastic trigger snap-ons you just hate yourself. We don't use convex sticks anymore because they've proven to be horrible slippery messes and Sony sticking with it for multiple generations was idiotic. It's also why the Joycons and Switch Pro Controllers feel so much worse to use in games that require you to aim compared to Xbox controllers or modern Playstation controllers that have a slight convex center but a ring to functionally make it concave rather than a large bump like Nintendo has.
>>746082865>>746083057A lot of this sounds more like people being retarded and going out of their way to use whacky grips for zero reason before whining.Like six buttons? Just...rest on the central 2 with your thumb, be able to tilt or lightly shift resting place to hit the others. Same as you do with the Gamecube where you rest on A and can easily hit the others with a zero effort nudge.Rightstick near the top meanwhile was actually fantastic because, again, unless you hold the controller like a mentally deficient retard, it's super comfortable and you can work the camera while being able to easily work the classic diamond of face buttons with the lower thumb/upper palmheel. This all reads like "I have manlet hands and hold the controller eagle claw so I can press the face buttons with the side of my pointer or some other insane faggotry"It's some straight up "Armored Core 1 and 2 having camera on the shoulders is SO HARD AND AWKWARD guys I can't handle axis inputs that don't involve anything more complicated than flexing a finger joint." shit.
>>746082397PS5 controller is GOATed with the touch pad, gyro, adaptive triggers, mic and speakerproblem with gimmick controllers is that developers actually need to implement the extra functionality
>>746083098>and going out of their way to use whacky grips for zero reason before whining.People generally hold the controllers wrong (One finger on shoulders) because "They're called triggers" and being used to SNES-style controllers for years so many companies design controllers around one-finger designs. It's why the Xbone controllers and Series controllers have that dip in the center of the bumpers and triggers. Despite two fingers being much more ergonomic, comfortable, and provide you more access people don't care to stop using one finger on the shoulders. Even some back buttons are designed around a one-finger shoulder than two-finger.>Just...rest on the central 2 with your thumb, be able to tilt or lightly shift resting place to hit the others. That's objectively worse and less control than having four buttons to press at the same time just by pushing down different parts of your thumb without moving your thumb at all. There's a reason why the black and white buttons never took off even though they were concave buttons that could easily be rolled over to, it's because they're in an uncomfortable location to hit and only work as supplementary buttons. Even if you had a situation like picture related where your thumb could easily hit the new buttons it would now introduce the problem of most players accidentally hitting them or them being slightly too far to reach making it uncomfortable in quick bursts.>and you can work the camera while being able to easily work the classic diamond of face buttons with the lower thumb/upper palmheel.Dude, no one is using their palm to press face buttons. You would constantly be having to push your hand inward and hold the controller in a very awkward position to do so. Crabbing generally gives you better control over the entire controller than that which is why people don't want it. The Wii U alone should show you how awful thumbstick up top is even on the GamePad.
>>746083424So yeah you just have baby hands and hold shit weird, alright.>You would constantly be having to push your hand inward and hold the controller in a very awkward position to do so.Just rock the fucking lower thumbjoint down it's piss easy. What do you have fucking toes for thumbs.
>>746083869>you just have baby handsNo? Controllers are too small for me constantly. The Xbone and Series controllers gave me cramps because they were significantly smaller than the 360 controller. The DualSense is the best official controller on the market due to its size.>and hold shit weirdWhat is "weird" to you? Because two-finger is how many games expect you to be playing as tons of stuff has you pressing both bumper and trigger at the same time. Ratchet and Clank is always a good example because of lock-on, strafing, shooting, and sometimes even ADS while doing those. Bumper Jumper is still one of the most recommended controller schemes for Halo and it has you pressing them all the time.>it's piss easyYeah, now actually do it on a controller. It's awkward, provides you far less control at a moment's notice, and will eventually cramp you hand over long periods of time.
>>746082397It's not efficient, it's just the lowest common denominator and a lot of people have imprinted on it.Forcing 2D and 3D to exist on one controller is pointless, there are already retro controllers for 2D games and menu navigation with a dpad is shit anyway. The second, full-sized analog stick is also a meme and so is the SNES style facebutton layout. The Wii U pro layout is just garbage and is worse than Xbox layout because it treats the second analog stick as more than the gimmick that it is and even strips out gyro on the console that popularized gyro aim.Xinput ruined the controller market.>>746083098You're not supposed to work the camera regularly on a thumbstick. If you can't find a useful or fun reason to rotate a thumbstick in a circle smooth, then it's the wrong input device,>>746082865The next step was split controllers. The only issue there is that consumers overreacted to the console market imploding in the early 2010s and blamed motion controls for the fact that they had been buying increasingly casual, unfun automated games on EVERY console.
>>746082397I wish someone actually tried to recreate the wii u pro controller for the PC with hall-effect sticks. I don't care if its by 8bitdo or gamesaar at this point.
>>746084446>The next step was split controllers.I can't imagine how you could think this because how would this help in any way? Even VR's way of doing it finds difficulty in implementing anything more than a handful of buttons and usually defaults to just a trigger at best. Theoretically you could do something like a grip controller akin to a Nunchuk where each finger gets a button, but I think that would be very difficult to make feel natural without depressing something in the moment, and face buttons would likely just be shifted there while your thumb only focuses on the face buttons leaving less buttons to work with overall because you have no access to a d-pad at that point and less shoulder buttons. Any scenario where split controllers happens only makes sense if it loses extra buttons and focuses more on gyro but now you've lost tons of buttons for little gain.
>>746084587>but I think that would be very difficult to make feel natural without depressing something in the momentKnuckle straps on VR controllers already solved this problem
