We are far, far, far beyond the point of diminishing returns in OS. Is the Steam distro of Linux in a good state or should I go with something else?
>>746106396I am a developer. I tried to improve the situation on Linux a bit by making some software for it that I thought it was missing. Did you know that Linux has no way to read the clipboard? Or open a window? Or do a bunch of other obvious things that everyone takes for granted?Linux has no desktop API for programmers. If you want to do these things then you need to either program different implementations for 6000 different desktop configurations, or glue some giant bloated monstrosity like SDL into your program that does it for you. In either case it will probably not work for very long because Linux is a dynamically linked OS so when you update some random library, it may break every program that used it. Good luck vetting updates when the update manager slaps you with a list of 2000 mystery packages that have an update every week.Meanwhile on Windows, you can make a single 100kb .exe file that does everything you need and works on every version of Windows from the last 15 years and probably continues to work 15 years into the future.

They just changed a number.
>>746109254What support does 10 not have?
>>746109285So we get all the way back to the crux of your argument, which is that on windows you want your executable to have access to everything, but you seem to think people should just deny your executable access to any of this because executables from people like you cant be trusted unless you are posting the full source code and letting people compile it themselves to verify. Thank you for defeating yourself.
>>746102352I have a vive, and it is a glorified Beat Saber mask, but that works without a hitch, even on the pretty bad specs of my living room PC (Bazzite)Haven't tried on my Desktop/Laptop (NixOS). It might be a pain to set up there.
>>746102925Also not him, but there are a bunch of reasons why that is the case. For example, the Windows 11 CPU scheduler is way better, specially when you're dealing with Intel meme cores. Windows 11 has better package manager and command line tools too. Also I don't know if this is actually the case since it has been a year since I last used Windows but I heard Windows 11 also has better performance for nvme drives. They are still both turbo ass compared to everything that came before Windows 8.
>>746109332The reason Steam dropped support for Windows 7 is because Steam is effectively built on top of google chrome. Chrome dropped support for Windows 7 so Steam had no choice in the matter. Chrome probably dropped support because 7 didn't have some security features that were added to newer versions of windows, or because Microsoft's program building tools use newer APIs that are not on Windows 7 so even the same identical program will stop working on 7 if you update your build tools. The same can easily happen to 10.>inb4 hurr durr chromium is not chromeNobody cares nerd.

All the software I use for personal purposes runs at normal user level. The complete opposite is the case on Windows. LITERALLY everything has that stupid fucking UAC shield on it and requires you to run as admin for absolutely no reason. Like why does a launcher for a video game require admin? IDK but it does. Why does a game mod manager require admin? IDK but it does. Why does an installer for a program I'm installing for "only my user" require admin when my user account isn't even admin? I have linux on a seperate machine that i use to run my jellyfin server and its cool too but it needs more configuring generally and a lot of the programs i use on windows even things i got from github or open source either dont have a linux equivalent or the linux equivalent is more work because GUIs are less popular generally. I want to use linux more and im learning how to but at the same time i find using windows way more convenient at least for now. >>746136023Windows does nothing for me personally that 10 couldn't do. Well, i guess MS paint is improved. but I have a pirated copy of photoshop, so I don't need paint. In 11, they removed a lot of the file sorting options, and made it difficult to find the "date modified" option. so in that sense, it's worse to use. Also, 11 tried to change the cut cope and paste options to these little icons, removing the actual text. Everyone hated it, but they tried to keep it for a long time, before finally relenting and updating it to include the text under the icons.
>>746136152Here check out this Linux faggot websitehttps://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/shop-pcs/gaming-pcsMake sure to pay extra attention to what CPUs those Copilot+ computers have.

Perhaps someone is just a modern tech enthusiast, or an AI enthusiast, and he wants to try out this different kind of system. Not realizing its surveilling him.As a personal anecdote, I recall the the "recall" scare when it first hit the news rounds. It definitely made me worry. >>746137187They walked back the opt-out and turned it into opt-in, so no. Someone would have to configure it to do so. >>746101864I'll post it here too, why not. Quick reminder that on Windows your IP address is periodically linked to a Microsoft "GDID" or global device identifier value which is calculated based on your physical TPM chip. It regenerates if you reinstall windows but the fact that it's calculated based on your TPM chip does mean they're all linkable to eachother and you. >>746101864this was me with xp and 7, im on 11 now and i dont care at all. it just works. 10 is not much different from 11. but i agree its a bit of a hassle to "learn" another os again
>>746144387You don't, you either find make wine work or let it go
>>746101864I'll probably switch to Linux like my brother who already switched to CachyOS. Bazzite seems good but I'm looking for a more general purpose distro as I'm not using my PC solely for gaming. I'm still considering switching though because I still use Word for some work, Excel for games that require it, and Notepad++ for a lot of things.

>>746102047it wastes a signifigant portion of your compute on background AI telementry spyware that cannot be disabled and basic features break every week as the entire OS is just an indian vibe coded mess that nobody even knows how to read, much less the indians who wrote the OS, it's unmaintainable unreadable garbage that they keep piling on more shitty bloat in an attempt to fix features that were working just fine in 7.
>>746101864>when Steam stops supporting Windows 10?When will that be? I guess I'll move to Linux and get another 10 years out of the machine?

outside of factorio what will I actually lose by just setting up a wiiu as an emulation box and setting up a pc with xp or vista without an internet connection to play pc games from the 90s and 2000s?
>>746105723because it's NOT as user friendly as some people keep sayingit's NOT just using the fucking appstore and clicking install. You have to troubleshoot SO MUCH and most software you have to go to forums that often lead to a rabbithole of issues because you lack dependencies. On top of it, all the little shit pet peeves that pile on top makes it unbearable in the end.

>>746102047>Win 11 is barely any differentNo, it's worse than Windows 10. And I'm not one of these "I want to keep muh Win7, I won't switch to 10". I actually liked Win10 and switched to it asap. There is just a clear pattern, sure the UI looks great (for most people), but the push for Web shit (not just windows) and non native crap really shows. All modern shit is fucking react(native), webview2, electron crap, Windows 10 on modern hardware feels so fucking snappy (non home versions) it's fucking crazy to think about... Windows never had schedutil (linux) or QoS (macos)... they just released Low Latency Profile for Windows in 2026, because most Apps have such a slow start up time, imagine Win10 native shit WITH the Low Latency Profile. But it makes sense for Microsoft going the cross platform / web way, they are betting on the cloud and subscriptions, in case their Desktop Marketshare will continue to shrink, so they will have a cross platform dependency and safety net. They are even pushing fucking Edge (Webshit again) on Android now, if you love computers stick with Win10 LTSC and get familiar with Gnu/Linux.
>>746101864you can still run steam on win7
