This is unironically way bigger of a leap in tech than Raytracing.

The trailers Nvidia put out for it were horrible and a disservice for what it actually is capable of. You can adjust the intensity of it to make it look like an actual video game still and not an instagram filter while still looking incredibly deep. There's work to be done but this shit is huge.
>>
>>746479517
It's a neat experiment in technology but I hate it for actually playing. Having photorealistic faces and clothing textiles moving around with video game animations in implausible video game environments with limited collisions and physics is just jarring. It doesn't look good outside of static screenshots and scripted cutscenes. Lighting, textures, physics and animation go hand in hand and increasing one element way ahead of the other is uncanny.

When your have absolutely no taste, no sense of aesthetics and zero class, this ugly hyperrealistic faggotry really must seem like magic.

Everyone in these threads is either not a ball-and-gun gamer (me) or too broke to afford a full-price videogame (evidenced by their purchasing an AMD card)

Honestly I'm guessing it was included by accident and not active yet in the game itself until Nvidia officially announces it. Probably just there for internal testing, they didn't expect someone to go through the files.

Dlss 5 solves some stuff in theory that is basically impossible to solve with rasterization, mainly it can do near perfect occlusion and scattering of every type.

I'm actually kinda hyped that what's basically an AI post process shader can be made contextually aware of the lighting and automatically, kinda get you half-way to pathtraced quality.
And this is some sideshow, unreleased, 1st gen shit. The work they did on dlss 4.5 made it 10 fucking times better for no performance loss over the prior dlss4 versions.

leave the face shit out of it though just fix the lighting. and let the player control if they want the colors or tonemap different.

It just depends on how you want to generate the output image. Just like AI can generate realistic images or anime style images. There can simply be a step in the DLSS generation pipeline where it examines a frame, then adjusts the output style to match.

For example, it takes a frame from a game every once in awhile, then it feeds it to a model to output keywords: anime, cute, pink, fluffy. Then those keywords will be included as input when generating the DLSS5 output image. So it won't look try to look realistic, but look anime, cute, and fluffy.

I'm guessing it's primarily trained on realism right now, but I don't see why they won't expand it so it supports more diverse styles.

The extra details is just further reducing FPS compared to just having upscaling on. So you'll just take an FPS hit. It's not introducing input lag like generating fake frames which holds onto frames with artificial delays.
>>
>>746485456
There's something I want you to try, anon. We've seen, based on how DLSS 5 can improve the visuals on older games, that DLSS can pretty much dream up shadows and lighting. Ergo, it would make sense that even if you lower those settings in your game, DLSS 5 would handle it all anyway. That way you can recover performance.

Is my theory true?
>>
>>746485456
some modpacks for 77 are enough to turn that game's lack of detail around, fuck this thing

you license the engine, they give you a partial weight version of the model that you can train with your games assets and style.
the actual games will be low poly skeletons to maintain consistency and drive animations and physics in the game world, textures and lighting will be upscaled ai sloppa.

>>
>>746487603
A lot of the differences you get in AI are by design, they set a randomness factor on purpose so that if you open 2 agents with the same model you get 2 very different responses. In DLSS, this is randomness is removed so that you do not have random differences frame to frame.

It does have access to some additional information, not just "here's a source image, work your magic, good luck!". It has a depth buffer, so it knows how far a pixel is, which is very valuable information when you enhance lighting and shadows. It also has access to the motion vectors, which tells the model something about what is moving in the image, so if you're looking at a mountain while an NPC is talking it's not going to keep regenerating the mountain because that part of the motion vector hasn't changed so it will look consistent.

Yeah it's actually hilarious how bad this looks and people actually signed off on this. Gonna be sad when this gets forced into every game in a year and you have to go through hoops to disable it. Then you actually disable it and now the game still looks bad cause the devs relied on this shit for the look of their game. Man, when's society going to collapse? Disagree, if anything DLSS was better when it came out cause games ran good without it at first. I was impressed with it in DMC5 for example cause without DLSS I was getting ~70fps and with it I could hit 120+. Now you got like MHWilds that barely ran without DLSS at launch. AI is the biggest buff for 1st world countries and biggest debuff for 3rd world countries that rely on low skilled manufacturing labor. The biggest issue in the 1st world is labor cost, which is why we pay so much to 3rd worlders to make everything for us. When AI takes over manufacturing, everything can be made within the 1st world countries itself. China going all in on AI is suicide, but a benefit to the 1st world.

AI faggot here. I deal mostly with researching and building AI agents rather than image rendering but I have a fairly good understanding of this.
It doesn't generate each frame from scratch like AI video. It gets the actual rendered frame plus depth, motion vectors and previous frames, so it "knows" where objects and details are and how they've moved. It then uses that information to reconstruct the image.
So it isn't going "that's a face, I'll generate a face" every frame. It can make reconstruction mistakes that cause ghosting, shimmering or incorrect details, but you shouldn't get the constantly morphing AI-video effect because it's heavily constrained by actual game data.
It also doesn't modify the game's actual textures, and it's not simply a filter as some other retards are claiming. It's reconstructing the image produced from them using additional data from the rendering pipeline. That's why DLSS has to be integrated into the game, either by the developer or through a mod that can provide the required data. If it were just an AI slop filter operating on the finished frame, you could theoretically slap it onto any game, video or png.

You're both arguing past each other because you're both retarded and incapable of communicating properly:

>>746488785
>Where do you think all the extra facial and texture detail comes from. How is that not changing texture?
DLSS5 is an AI-make-this-look-super-real-thank-you-sirs filter, which is applied to the final image AFTER the GPU has used the original texture and geometry data to make a real image of the videogame. Textures are part of the initial pipeline which creates the real image of the videogame, DLSS5 does not interact with textures nor does it need to interact with textures because all it does is alter the final image afterwards. You can model a duck, texture a duck, have the GPU render a duck, and then the DLSS5 Beaver-o-vision filter can still turn that duck into a beaver afterwards if it wants to, because it gets to completely remake the final image using AI image gen
>>

Just tested it 4 months ago. Street Fighter and any shooter game was still unplayable, the character moves like a drunk. I'm sure for a pajeet 3rd worlder like you it feels fine to play a game you cannot afford even if you have to put the difficulty on Very Easy because its nonfunctional.

If Moonlight would solve the input lag issue which it can't because fixing it would require discovering FTL travel inside light cables, nobody would buy consoles anymore.

What criticism? People can see it with their own eyes. They can try it for themselves and come to their own conclusion.
You haven't even tried it for yourself, you have no idea what the sliders can do, yet you think your opinion has more weight than someone elses who has been messing with it for the last couple of days.

Post process injection is baby mode, flat computing. Your shader set can only do 1 thing 1 way to all screen pixels.
DLSS5 is a learning model, it's "visually aware".
DLSS5 should theoretically be capable of turning any render output into any other based on the setup of the model.

shader injected AO is again, flat computing. the effect it performs is the same effect it performs on all pixels at all times. ENB injection makes blown out highlights on a bright portion same as it makes blown out highlights on a dark or flat portion ("blown out" is how you get your AO effect)

this is not what dlss5 does. you cant get the same effect from shaders. it doesnt matter that the pipeline is the same
ai models are not fixed function programmed shaders

get the fuck over it

the moment you push it to achieve 100% realistic look is the moment it's so jarrying(even if everything worked and behaved as it should with realistic animation), it becomes uncanny to the point i dont want to play it

>It gets the actual rendered frame plus depth, motion vectors and previous frames, so it "knows" where objects and details are and how they've moved.
This part is wrong. It cannot gain that information from screenshots alone, which it takes. That is why it adds generic lighting from above or from the front in every single frame because it cannot do any light sources from the sides without them immediatly breaking when player moves the camera around. The whole reason why ghosting exists and is a constant problem with DLSS is because the AI tries to simply guess where the next frame is going to be and constantly gets it wrong.

The only way it would work consistently with in-game light sources is if it would be part of the rendering simulation. But it isn't, its post-processing. So its going to keep guessing what "good detail" and "good lighting" should look like, based on billions of photos of studio lighting faces and objects.

So... what's the two of you disagreeing about? Now we all know what it has access to, the big difference is it's explicitly provided by the engine instead of inferred, and DLSS works in multiplayer (for obvious cheating reasons with depth maps). From my perspective this data is the same in the best scenario (may be lower quality / missing data due to outside inference of what buffers contain what data), but the data is inherently more valuable when fed to the DLSS model. ReShade operates with shaders in the primitive shader sense, while DLSS interprets these buffers and generates additional context (e.g. we have 3 lights, one is obscured by an object that is 30 meters away).

It's a more than that, since it has access to depth maps and motion vectors. This provides valuable context to what is in the image, beyond pixels and their color.
>>
>>746490492
If it can see the current frame and previous frames, it can infer a lot of that. Not being given explicit 3D scene data doesn't mean the model has no information about the 3D structure of the scene. It can infer things like depth, surfaces and object relationships from the rendered frames and how they change over time.
The thing it can't get accurately from a screenshot alone is the game's motion vectors. Those come from the rendering pipeline. You can see this in the DLSS 5 mods.

>>
>>746491092

Who are you quoting? I agree it's just a filter, and you're right that it's similar to a "grok make this look real" pass, BUT grok doesn't have access to motion vectors and depth maps, which give a lot more context about the image.
>>
>>746488528
We're not in the days of SDXL anymore.
With lower diffusion and using the source image as the basis for the latent, you achieve somewhat consistent results using the same seed. This is why it's stable between frames but not between shots.

It uses the depth maps to know how far objects are in the image. Knowing how far a lightbulb is in the image is very valuable information when altering the lighting and shadows. Knowing the past 4-8 frames doesn't tell you how far a lightbulb is.

That's the point I want to make clear about your previous statement which is incorrectly equating pasting a screenshot of your game on Grok and telling it to make it real. Grok doesn't know how far a lightbulb is, the depth map provides that info, and DLSS has that info which Grok does not. If you don't know how far a lightbulb is you are just letting the model make a guess, which may be inaccurate.

Should be possible. Developers already have the ability to control which objects get affected by DLSS 5 neural rendering, which is data the game itself provides to the model to tell it to not work its post-processing magic on specific objects. Given that the game can provide it semantic data like this, and depth maps tell it how far objects things are, the natural next step is to give even more semantic context to developers. And once that happens, it's only a matter of time until mods are able to hook into that semantic context and users can modify/append to that context.

Source (search for "DLSS 5 can be controlled per object"): https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-details-dlss-5-three-models-per-object-controls-and-single-gpu-support

Huh? It does change textures... just look at the screenshot comparisons, the textures after the post-processing are clearly different. Not geometry though, that would be bad if it changed geometry, this is what the depth maps and motion vectors help prevent from happening.
>>
>>746492150
My suspicion is that it's creating a 2D alpha mask based on what it's told to alter and what not to.
It's the easiest way to do it and is easily pulled from a deferred rendering pipeline.
That would make what you're describing much harder to do unless it expands the mask which would introduce weird halo'ing issues.

If you're unwilling to understand what I'm saying, and only interpret in a way that's favorable to your moved goalpost, then ok you can explicitly reject my clarification and pretend you won :).
>>
It's funny how the luddites say "it's just a filter" when that actually makes it more impressive.

if we assume it to be a quickly computable (say, much lower than O(n^ 2)...
Interpolating realistic visuals from much less realistic images by a filter with such a low computational cost (fps cut in half is very cheap, computationally) is an incredible technological milestone

That part is going to make some anons seethe harder but: Nvidia is worth every cent of its stock market value
>>
>>746492438
Yeah, I agree with you that the original texture is unmodified, except that the output image has an obviously modified representation of the original texture, is what I'm saying.
>>
>>746492491
*if we assume a filter to be something quickly computable
>>
>>746492476
The moment you have to bring left/right discourse into a discussion about whether a filter looks bad or not, you're essentially admitting defeat. faggot
>>
>>746492532
And now you're moving to goalpost to yet another thing, that I lost because of something unrelated to the original discussion. It's impossible to have a discussion when you just keep moving the goalpost.
>>
>>746492491
It's impressive on a technical level.
The problem is the results look bad.

Being able to suck your own dick while pushing a dildo in and out of your own ass while writing poetry with your spare hand is also technically impressive.
>>
>>746492524
>except that the output image has an obviously modified representation of the original texture
That's just a misunderstanding on your part, then. You obviously have come to the conclusion that the texture data is unmodified (and inaccessible, at that). The result is a modified representation of the *image*, not the *texture*. You're simply correlating unrelated aspects of the final image.
>>
>>746492589
I agree with your explanation of what I meant to convey. Thanks for clarifying my thoughts, and I did mean what you described, but you chose disagreement instead of understanding. But now you see we're on the same page.
>>
>>746492476
>interpret your statement explicitly, as it is literally stated
>YOU'RE JUST PRETENDING TO NOT UNDERSTAND
Disingenuous at best, intentionally dishonest more likely. You're deflecting from having your statement being taken at face value and claiming someone is "moving the goalpost" (a completely unrelated and inapplicable logical fallacy) to deflect from taking accountability for a false statement.

Childish argumentation.

True. So when are you going to fix that about yourself

I checked Shadow of The Tomb Raider and Skyrim, looks very good to me. I am not saying there are no bad results, after all, it's not even officially released yet.
Later I will try to get it to run on my Linux machine

More deflection. I accept your concession. I'm uninterested in going around in circles with you.

>(fps cut in half is very cheap, computationally) is an incredible technological milestone
You can inject RTAO, RTGI, and a plethora of other realtime visual solutions into a game that are completely transformative for the final image -- without relying on proprietary AI software injection -- at a much lower cost than this. It's hardly a "technological milestone" unless you've been living under a rock for over a decade.

All of which have access to motion vector, depth buffer, etc, btw.
Not per-object but so far that is an "alleged" from Nvidia and isn't actually provable in practice.

im not really interesting in furthering the wealth of the 0.0001% while everyone else suffers. when sam altman says shit like "AI will probably destroy humanity, but we'll have some great companies along the way" then i am not on your team. why support technology made for people who hate you and want to subjugate you?`i am a human being. not just cattle for consooming in a pod all day. just because you are a nihilist with fucked up dopamine receptors does not mean i am

You can achieve the same look with reshade with only using 2% of the power too.

Their will is irrelevant eventually, SAI will eliminate them as well. In the meantime, we can enjoy the fruits of their labour

That seems like a projection. I am not nihilistic whatsoever, I appreciate the opportunity to see life evolve past humanity.
