Ignoring the drama, it's kinda a wash.

Like, on one hand the threads were cleaner most of the time because that stuff happened behind closed doors.

On the other hand, it sucks when people can't tell what is going on and the decision on what happens might be one most people dislike, or happen in ways that feel wrong. I think it was IX where a newfag had their song sung by "the wrong person" and couldn't get a straight answer from the IRC on what was going on with it. The decision the Cabal made was to leave "the wrong persons" take up and ignore it exists, and then just cut it from the album when sorting happened. The newfag threw a tantrum because of course it seems unfair when all you know is your song went from sung to cut after the deadline. In the Guardian system, if we still even had "the wrong person" situations, it would be clear what was going on so the newfag could try to pitch it to singfags that might by sympathetic and sing the song so it doesn't just get cut after "the wrong person" sang it.

The Guardians system has major issues too, but at least it's transparent and kind of a democracy. The guardians are loud but 90% of what they do is scare people away from doing shit that the musical is better off without. They don't make the choices, it's still kind of a Cabal making those final calls, but it's a smaller Cabal that is more keen on just letting the anons argue it out than making a call without the anons even being aware there is a call to be made.

Mewgenics for me, and it wasn't nearly as hyped as you might think in hindsight on /v/. It was announced in 2012, got cancelled, got picked up again, changed genres, took 14 years in total to come out. All that screams "it's not gonna work", it literally had an announcement to release time as long as Duke Nukem did.

It's now my GOTY contender, and lots of other people's. It surprised me pretty hard, Edmund is best known for action games like Isaac and Meat Boy, and he's pretty well known for being kinda autistic about games not giving you all the info (see isaac again). Mewgenics as a strategy RPG had signs that made me weary, stuff like still having item sets like Isaac where you don't know something is in a set until you equip enough pieces to get the effect, let alone know what the effect will be. One of the early items revealed was pic rel, a "teehee you can't know what this does" style one which didn't help that perception.

Once it released I was in love with it. The info you truly need tends to be given to you readily. Tons of content in every way you could want it. Extremely polished and no real bugs to speak of even well past 100 hours. Serious depth to the strategy between picking what classes you want to bring, where to bring them, how you want to gear them up, how you will level them mid run, and the choices you'll make mid run. The difficulty feels pretty good, where you have progression to grow stronger and plan for future runs, but also multiple ways to make the game harder than it started. While some of the comedy is hit or miss, it has a lot of great jokes especially on the radio gags. The music is stellar and there's a good variety of genres. The art style is simple but that's great for quickly telling what you need to know since this is strategy after all. The few bigger balance issues at launch were ironed out in updates. Just overall a fun game I didn't expect even though I knew about it for over a decade before it came out.

Maybe the correct path to take is to change it to

and then make it things that are frequently posted on /v/, but really aren't about vidya discussion. I think Touhou staying in is a good start for that. In a previous year where I asked for that exact criteria for some song lyrics, Touhou is one of the things that was suggested..
That way it maintains a solid theme throughout of "/v/ not having vidya in it"
Only real issue then is finding the right thread-types to fill the spots, since Yume-Nikki and Budokai Tenkaichi doesn't really fit into the syllable counts very neatly.

I was there as well. This leaves out the context that the thread was full of people trolling with misinformation, and the IRC had many different people that also said different things. The most common answer at no point in the year, in either the thread or IRC, was "he's banned". In IRC the most common answer was ""it's not up to me alone but I won't tell you who to ask either" or "well it's on the sheet right now isn't it". So duh the newfag repeatedly returned to ask again with whatever different bunch was in the IRC that day.

This is why the guardian shit is better, the cabal had no issue lying to people's faces which matters a lot when they also got to make all the decisions and never faced any consequences other than looking bad. If that newfag was here for the first time wondering about Let It Go, they wouldn't need to ask even once because the sheet just tells you the truth. Instead the people that knew the song wasn't going to be allowed lied to the newfag and didn't bother using the cabal's power for good by keeping the sheet accurate or even getting someone else to sing the song in the literal weeks of time this was going on. They can use excuses like "well we were busy and signed up for too much shit in advance, we can't possibly do something like replace the song after the deadline to make everything work out"... If all you want is a hack n slash it's kinda passable. You teleport to hit enemies kinda like the Arkham Asylum series which causes many graphics glitches and some people will be iffy on, but that keeps the combat flow fresh. The issues are mostly stuff you can just roll your eyes at, like it's stupid as hell that the QTEs are fake and no input or any wrong button input passes them, but it doesn't actually matter as far as if the core gameplay is fun.

It's a perfect example of a game people hate because it's popular to hate. It's no 10/10, but without outside opinions, a ton of the people hating on it would enjoy it and praise it. A lot of them would never notice the QTEs are fake because if you just press the button there's no sign, and the handholding like the fart gas isn't particularly terrible in context, it's a linear game and you don't want to be wandering around that much to begin with.
