Whole "crafting" system is a waste of time.I really dislike modern open world games, it's just busy work with no real reward.Control 1 had some of this but ratio of interesting stuff to grind was better. Dylan hated it so much that he tried to escape multiple times, and the third time resulted in Roberts, head of security at the time, being made Dylan’s 24/7 warden so another escape wouldn’t happen, and so staff would stop smuggling him treats and trying to treat him better when he wasn’t watching, which was especially bad given the implication that he may have beat Dylan for insubordination, or at least threatened to do so. This culminated in Dylan lashing out and killing Roberts, potentially in self defense, which resulted in the MCD’s creation, and Darling deciding that maybe Dylan could still be useful as a weapon if he couldn’t be the next Director. Dylan lashes out again, kills more people, gets locked away after being deemed a failure, and the rest is history.

Like if you play all the games in release order is it actually rewarding as an overarching story?
