I think it was in partnership with a Japanese television station. This partnership created this game and All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.

It was like 50 years of Fuji TV or something and they made the characters for the event and supposedly the game was ready in development and they just put the characters in it, but in order for them to release it outside of Japan and not ever have to pay them to use the characters they put Mario characters in it.
>>
In Japan it was doki doki and in North America it was super Mario bros 2

Then it was super Mario usa after that.
