Unsurprisingly, the Japanese are a lot like the people of this website. If someone never talks about how they feel, then they never become endearing, and you feel nothing about them. In Western games, they do talk about their feelings, to the point where you understand and sympathise with the character. I would say it's a problem with ethnics in general. They're all afraid of showing an emotion that isn't anger, because they think it makes them look weak. What happens? They become unlikeable instead of weak.
Hot take: if your video game has even 0.000001 seconds of cutscenes in it, voice acting, or fancy HD graphics, then it does not have a good story by default. You spent money on non-gameplay, and thus shit on the entire purpose of the medium, which is to showcase INTERACTIVITY.
