The problem with next fest is that thousands of games are concentrated into its on funnel

I think valve just needs to find a way to spread that out more
The personal calendar has been fantastic so I hope tbey take a page out of that and find a way to integrate it into the fest
>>
>>750049856
The calendar expanding to also let you know about demos outside of the next fest cycles could be cool.
>>
>>750049953
That might clog it up too much but I think a calender specifically sequestered just for demos would be great
AND it encourages developers to participate in next fest when theyre actually sure that their game is releasing in the next few months

Another thing Id like to see is Valve just outright letting people click the "algorithm" button so they immediately get personalized recs ibstead of the first 2 day fuckfest next fest always goes through
Make it opt in

>>
>>750050456
The calendar works because its only really pulling from a thousand "relevant" games that are releasing in the next few weeks

Issue with next fest is that it pulls from 7000 fucking demos all at the same time so valve just needs to add more places to show off those demos off

Game very much inspired by first Crash Bandicoot with both its level design and mc's skills. Big focus on difficulty and mastering the game, with its one hit kills and paid checkpoints. I was annoyed at times because of it, but overall I like the game. It's also also 100% voiced by the dev himself with his house microphone, which I find both distracting and charming in a way.

I didn't have any trouble running the game on my 3070 TI.
The room(s) are very claustrophobic but I didn't have a problem with any of the puzzles at all.
Honestly anyone that tries that demo can probably skip right over the FMV intro, as it didn't seem to really add anything to the game that wasn't already conveyed by the text laying around in the level.

Two non-recommendations.
Dark Side Void visually looked good, and actually felt fine to play, but didn't hook me at all. Each mission was just go kill some stuff in a large square area of empty space. Never felt threatened boosting around shootin stuff, and melee was too cumbersome to actually use at speed.
Would rather go play more brigador.

Asuka badly wants to be Initial D but about a girl at a racing school. The driving model though was rough, wants to be simcade but it's bad at being a sim or arcade. Also every time I changed gear the rpm would bounce wildly for two seconds. That's honestly what drove me the most insane, engines don't work like that unless you seriously miss a rev match.
Weirdest rpm behavior in any racing game I've ever played.

Ideas guys never actually do design work.
If they actually had a complete design to work with, their title would be Designer or Director, both of which entail way more effort than some surface level concept that would be thrown at a slop machine.
With card games which are static and well-understood, you can literally just steal mechanics from established TCG and slap whatever art you want onto them.
Why do you think so many slay the spire ripoffs all play the same way? There isnt an ounce of creativity in their design.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4139580/Where_the_Seeds_Fall/
A try after it got posted last thread, I'm generally a fan of weird atypical platformers.
Looks like shit on medium settings, kinda had a headache from the effects and blur by the end of the 20~ minute demo level. Controls fine for the most part, the movement on foot felt slipperier than in the air which was odd.
Weird little girl makes cute noises, wasn't overdone or distracting.
I'd buy it an give it a play for less than $10, feels like something made by a single indie dev in a short timeframe but it's cygame's new AA studio or whatever the fuck so maybe it's all interns.

Ending it right as you're getting a build put together leaves you wanting more, which is good for a demo. You're also spared the experience of having so many things in the bag that actually getting to what you need is a bit troublesome for the most part.
There's some different endings at least, it'll probably be based on follower count or having specific characters befriended.

Cmon now, everyone knows why they rose in popularity when twitch streaming became commonplace. Its episodic entertainment, the allure of one more try has been known since before the coin-op days, before computers even existed where youd get your entertainment out of watching a coin fall down and hit pins while youre hoping it falls in the high score hole.

Mr Records is the biggest disappointment of nextfest for me so far
The concept is great and the charting is interesting but it's too easy and the songs are a complete pisstake. They hit you with the one good Beatles inspired song for the tutorial and the rest is just "what if we did this genre but got reddit to write the lyrics", it comes off as completely insincere.
>>
>>750068321
Yeah cause old times people had weird movement rules it was the same thing in chess and battles and stuff it is why they always did it in lines. Modern day controls mirror humans evolving into being able to move more freely so tank controls in medieval.times makes sense.

deckbuilding mechanics have existed before slay the spire was conceived. the very idea of variable start conditions or a shuffled shop/loot/event deck is a physical design phenomenon and not something that STS invented.
You're free to dislike the mechanics that STS popularized that have been copied to high hell on repeat since 2019
if anything I adore card games that do interesting things that are not possible to play on a table and are also mechanically distinct from having to play something that's just copying Dominion without realizing it.
to blanket this game structure as "all games within the past 10 years" is not what you are saying in this post. say what you mean instead of expecting us to read your fucking mind.

You don't need the artist gene. You need the aesthetic gene. There are artists, mechanically proficient artists, who COULD draw the most beautiful art, yet they CHOOSE to draw aesthetically horrible shit instead. rhythm heaven fever had some coop games that you easily could have done by yourself, and when they ported the endless games to 3DS they made it singleplayer
but in all seriousness fucking around with 2 people using the same controller has been an old passtime that I used to do a bunch back in gradeschool and onward for couch coop when not all games actually supported multiplayer. always was a recipe for disaster and laughs so I'm glad people are going out of their way to replicate that.

>Probably Stolen
Haven't played this fest so I can't speak about the fish farming, but what was there in the last demo was pretty dissapointing once you see how it works a few hours in
I'm still downloading it day one on release but I hope that either the mechanics not in the demo are far more advanced or the ones we have are missing some lategame complexity, because right now only the rats were somewhat engaging, metal refining was braindead from the moment you unlock it, water purification quickly becomes braindead the second you put enough efficiency (?) modules in the purifier to bruteforce it (and the only scaling is buying more purifiers and modules to purify more water at once) and the lack of a time limit means stuff like checking contraband is meaningless since it's easy to spot and you don't have any pressure
I also remember the reputation system being pretty shit since it climbs at a glacial pace (except when I called security on some thief near the start and instantly got -18 points with black market in exchange for like 0.04 with sec)

Enemies are samey and gameplay a bit too easy, but the main character's personality (she's clearly not a goody two shoes) and her daughter sold me on the game. great atmosphere and sound design, dialogue sometimes lacks punctuation which makes the characters sound weird. Very cool SRPG that tickles my armor autism with a neat penetration system (armor has coverage, multiple layers, accurate hits can bypass armor, and so on). Lethality is high. Grappling also appears to be an option to deal with heavily armored dudes. Got my ass kicked by a bunch of minotaurs, but I had a good time. Will be playing more later.
My one big complaint is that there's no numerical indicator on how much movement a character has left, and I wasn't able to find the specifics on the effects of the different damage types (slashing inflicts bleed, but I'm unsure about bashing/piercing)

I know these 1st person sword swinging games aren't too rare nowadays, but I had fun playing this one. I actually missed the one secret and had to start backtracking to find it. In retrospect, it wasn't subtle. 1 point subtracted for the devs not resisting the urge to shove their cats into the game.

Prison of husks is truly a abomination of a game. the dev wants it to be demons souls but it forces you to use rally/parry with a incredibly jank animation and input buffer. Also starting with no weapon so you battle the camera in those shitty rooms for 5 minutes until memorizing the layout and getting a sword. and holy fuck the first boss is a total joke so he went lol xd ads!!111 and you once again fight the shitty lockon system that feels awful to use.

Dunno if it fits the thread since it doesn't have a demo but https://store.steampowered.com/app/4409620/ARCS/ just released. It's not in the Next Fest and it's not really what you're looking for, but I'm going to shill it anyways. Sakura Arms has had a demo that's been getting updated for a while now, and it's fairly unique, and it's a digital version of an actual existing game. Before every match, you and your opponent select what card pools you can use and then build a deck from the cards you have available to you. Basically all actions just move the same tokens around between various locations. Unfortunately the tutorial is kind of bad, but once you figure out the core mechanics everything comes together easily enough. It helps to think of it like a fighting game turned into a card game.

Has anyone played these? It's the third entry in a series but it caught my eye for having some decent polish to the gameplay in the trailer. Tried out the demo and thought it was solid. It has a similar exploration approach to classic Zelda as Tunic did, except they're supposedly short games and probably won't be as convoluted as that, and with less of a focus on combat. I'll probably check out the rest of the series after the fest is over.
