This is fundamentally the reason why Japanese gamers don't want to preserve anything, and see games only as ephemeral. They don't actually see it as art. They say they do, but they don't. They treat their art their country makes with respect and preserve it. Fundamentally the idea of preserving a video game to them is like saying you're going to preserve an egg salad sandwich forever. They can't conceive of why you'd do that, especially because newer sandwiches have better ingredients. It's very strange but been written on.
>>
>>750277183
The medium is the message.
>>
Sorry Mustafa, you're not going to make me hate the Japanese.
>>
>>750277183
I don't think you actually read the article
>>
I mean, look at shit like Evangelion or Xenogears, pretentious database slop. Shallow characters, shitty writing, tons of namedropping
>>
>>750277578
It's not about Japan as a whole, it's about otaku culture/database consumption.
>>
Isn't it more because Japan is 99% city and there are retro video game stores on every block selling classic snes games for $5'
It's also why they don't understand online multiplayer, because in Japan everyone is a weaboo nerd gamer and they all live within walking distance of each other.
>>
>>750277183
I don't think this means what you think it means. This is more about people who read Evageeks religiously and care more about the origins of the Chamber of Guf than they do about characters and themes.
>>
>>750277183
Is this the JCP faggot who seethed over otaku suggesting they only watch anime and read manga to catalog a collection of pretty lolis like trophies and totally don't like the media they spend hours on? Anyway, videogames aren't art and never will be.
>>
>>750277659

>They don't actually see it as art
And they're right
>>
china and korea shills are getting uppity
>>
>>750277841
I just find stuff like this overrated: characters repeat the moral ten times in a heavy handed superficial way, they undergo character development in just two dialogues, and there's an absurd lack of trust in the audience's intelligence. The best part is they pretend to be "philosophical work", when they're really just poorly executed genre pieces.
>>
>>750278042
No, when it's them it's over war crime denialism, just like when it's japan and china propaganda over korea it's about chaebol culture and when it's japan and korea propaganda about china it's about their lack of human rights. There's rules to the Asian triangular propaganda complex because it's mutually beneficial for the perpetrator and recipient.
>>
>>750277183
I read that article and I really don't get what it's about.
Like it's trying to say that people enjoy long running series for the lore or a specific popular character and not for the plot.
But then it's presenting this like it's a bad thing and something otaku are responsible for.
>>
>>750278381
To me it's kind of sad, they spend 10 seconds on the characters or the story, and a million hours on "wait, who is this guy?" or "where does this other one come from?". Which, I mean, is fine, but it's still just genre entertainment. It's sad to see people who genuinely think this stuff is high literature.
>>
>>750277183
It's because of Japanese copyright laws, and lack of foresight. Only when something has fallen into public domain can it be preserved and made available to the public, and no one is doing that. They also just assumed that people would always be playing the game on its original console. So if someone in 2035 wanted to play Final Fantasy VI, they would dust off an old SFC and play it on an SD CRT TV.
>>
>>750278646

They like the funny girls doing cute things but do they actually like the specific characters or just vague concepts? It comes from the fact that you could take the vague concepts they like and apply anything to it and they'd love it. They like the narrative tropes not actual stories or meaning.

"Otaku works aren't high art"fags can't explain Kingdom Hearts.
>>
>>750278381
It's basically about fandom. Many consumers of fiction don't engage with it for its primary writing but for its downstream subculture, fanworks, extraneous lore autism, etc.
>>
>>750277183
Japanese are so brainwashed is kinda sad
>>
>>750278963
Kingdom Hearts wouldn't even pass for a children's media franchise if it originated entirely in the West. Most Kojima films would be B movie tier that would be cult classics for "so bad they're good" material.
>>
>>750277183
Elon must apologize for exposing japanese autism to the entire world through twitter, japanese have had their reputation destroyed at the same level of india and way faster as well
>>
>>750278932
Indeed, the characters are made with a cookie cutter, almost like they were serial produced, with very rigid and always identical archetypes. I mean commercial works, but well, they are made on purpose to cause immediate involvement because they are recognizable.
>>
>>750278907
>>750278996
Ebert was right about fandom culture btw
>>
>>750278963
Monogatari isn't really complicated, in fact the pattern of its arcs tends to be a problem suddenly being solved in a simple way that makes all the fretting pointless. It has pretty deep themes relating to how you think and process things even if it primarily uses it to drive comedy.
>>
>>750277636
Nobody ever does. See for example >>750277758 who seems to think it's about focusing on lore and world building or >>750278996 this guy who thinks it's about doujin culture. Decidedly, otaku are the true Latter Day saints and the protagonists of an easy-does-it Apocalypse. Nothing evokes the end of the world more than a man sitting at his battlestation, swathed in the KYAAs and ATATATATAs eminating from his logitech speakers, cocooned in the solitary sacrifice of his time, indifferent even to what's happening on X since he expects what's happening to come only as the fruit of his own efforts, from exhausting the energy of a body that has in his own eyes become that of a little girls. Our ancestors, when in despair, would commit suicide by careening armor plated bulldozers through town till they could be driven no longer. The otaku commits suicide by starting a thread asking which side of the choco coronet should be eaten first. His eyes are bloodshot, semen drips from OPs mouth. Do not reply to him. He will either post a smug anime girl to laugh at you or simply carry on pasting CHRIST ON A MOPED like a man posessed.

>>
>>750279464
That's not what his book says. That is what the book's translator says. See, you're not making a very good case for being literate here.

Not only that, the translator does not say that "database consumption is about doujin culture", he says "we can find similarities between types of media consumption between fan cultures".
>>
>>750279630
I never used the phrase "doujin culture", I said consumers of fiction engage with it via its subculture

>this is somehow considered relevant enough to have a wikipedia article
lol. wikipedia is so fucking random man. also the part where some jap talks about "the grand narrative of bikkuriman stickers" is the most absurd sentence i've ever read, what the hell. academics are such posers, they think making up fancy terms and writing articles on things makes it relevant, when in reality no one would ever seriously use this term when it's already been so well defined and understood forever. i guess it's some kind of cognitive dissonance, that the japs have become so absorbed into lawfulness and non-piracy that the very concept of taking someone else's work and building on it is this bizarre, strange thing that must be described rather than an obvious, thoroughly described human behavior that needs no new terms
>>
>>750278932

They're just saying, taking Evangelion as an example, about this phenomenon where fans stop experiencing the work as a unit of meaning and start consuming certain aspects of it. I don't know how to say it, the most cliché example is Asuka and Rei in any given context, totally disconnected from the reference work, everything reworked in a consumerist way. It's not necessarily the original work's fault, sometimes it is, but not in general, but yeah, we were talking about a sociological trend.
>>
>>750279254
Everyone thinks it's about whatever their personal pet issue with "fandoms" is. Nobody ever sees the truth about the whole book he wrote: He was really mad at Di Gi Charat being popular despite being shit. That is, fundamentally, what "database consumption" is all about. Nothing else.

>>
>>750281517

>>
>>750281517
there must be a gorillion works throughout the millenia where the narrative came later or took a back seat.

japs outward opinion on piracy is not bad anyways.
there is generally zero benefits to blubbering about piracy online. it only draws the ire of corporations towards piracy projects. and now we got the new cancer on the block which is bot swarms that mass download shit from pirated sites, killing them because the hosts cant afford them anymore.
retarded latinx also killed some emulation projects on android because they kept harrassing devs.

its something everybody needs to shut up about and do in silence, at most shared with friends and family.
the polar opposite to their stance is the brown third worlder who will openly brag to nintendo about pirating the game they just released right under their twitter ad for the game, while directly linking to the piracy site he got it from, and then throwing a tantrum when said site disappears.

It's like watching the Matrix only for the 3d slow-mo effect and being a "fan" of movies with that specific effect.

If Shinobu was a fagpusher or redditard and not a based kakaka wise lolipire who forms a beautiful romance with a human I wouldn't like her as a character. I also like that she is beautiful. This guy's point is stupid. He sees something he willingly doesn't understand and insists that there must be no "content" to the narrative or whatever and that people don't actually care for the characters beyond the labels. This is proven false by the Japanese repeatedly who will refuse some of the nicest stuff just because of small things they disagree with like the interesting original anime that was sniped for mocking smokers. This guy is essentially abusing the fact that we have found media made by like minded individuals so we enjoy it in multiple ways. Games aren't art. They may contain certain parts that can be considered art, like the story, music, ideas and such, but games themselves are not art, just the medium that allows the user to experience it.
But I disagree with your take that the entire Japan culture is against preserving gaming and the food analogy is bad, some would argue because it's food analogy I would argue because having a magical fridge called HDD that can output and offer to anyone free sandwiches forever then choosing to not preserve them is, frankly, retarded.

Why are we still arguing with this statement of games being art or not in the first place? It should be special to you, for no reason in particular other than your resonance with it.

Cards sometimes being linked to censorship pushes has a history much longer than the most recent issue. But yes it was pretty much overstated in part because supporters of activist groups who also pretend to participate in otaku communities wanted a favorable target to blame everything on to turn attention away from their groups. Japanese are pretty good at ignoring gaijin by this point and most censorship in America is only performative. Those like Steam reviewers and localizers largely make up shit to claim why they supposedly can't host lewd (often even mild) content of Japanese origin. But the internet is full of doomers who'll endlessly repeat these narratives because they are just like that. Japanese stuff is definitely suppressed to make it harder for us to access by various groups. But it is also available in many other places because it isn't actually illegal and you can often continue selling it by simply saying no when asked to remove it and by making sure you don't hire idiots. A lot of the peak censorship era was literally just evil people exploiting cowards.

It's becoming trendy to shit on Japan and anime again. Mainly because westoids are realizing japs do not look at anime like they do and they are starting to understand why japan churns out so much slop intentionally such as isekai. It isn't that they are oblivious it is that many love the tropes attached to the slop and do not give a shit about the plot like the westoids do. They are fundamentally different, one conceptualizes it as a focal point the other doesn't care and wants it to be made so they can look at tits bounce in wacky scenarios.

A bunch of fags flooded the hobby and pushed it into mainstream due to lockdown. They couldn't handle this and are essentially ragequitting animanga and acting all bitter and pissy towards Japan to justify it. The era of the Crunchyroll weeb is collapsing.

This is a perfect example if you didn't watch star trek, and star trek was exactly what people who didn't watch it expect it to be.

In reality star trek is just Roddenberry's idea of an ideal civilized human culture expressed as a monoculture in the federation. TOS is just 1960s american progressive culture, TNG is just 1990s american progressive culture. In fact the strangest thing about it is humans are this monoculture that gets along and you need aliens with ridiculous beefs to cause any conflict. Meanwhile geographically I can travel america in 2026 and find stranger cultures that are more difficult to co-exist with than ones I saw on star trek.

This has nothing to do with CURRY EVENTS, this has everything to do with the fact that this was an extremely hot button topic in the late 90s and early 2000s of Japanese media and economic criticism. In fact, there used to be very hot debates on how Japan handled its economic and cultural boom in the 80s and 90s as the direct fault towards the capitulation towards the obsessive market in the 2000s; because while animation and video games were popping off hardcore around that time, environmentalism and cultural preservation for traditional arts started to hit a massive, massive decline. Rakugo, for example, very nearly reached a point where one could consider it going extinct. It would be like if stage plays in the US became so rare that the 'theater kid' insult lost all of its teeth and edge and was no different than calling someone a 'lacross player'.

Korea might have bad taste in games, but it is actually the country most serious about gaming. There it is treated as some weird profession thing. >Japanese Sonic fanbase genuinely sees nothing wrong with the video games or how any of the characters are written
Why OP and others ITT are singling out Japanese drones is beyond me. This type of consumerist fagdom shit is everywhere. A huge example right now is indie animation where people show up for shipping, heckin characters, yet the writing sucks ass in many of those shows. I know seasonal anime also has this issue. Not I dont mind if someone just wants to watch a quick single-season show and enjoy what they saw, but there is a large group who just likes bits of the show and rarely acknowledges the show as a whole. This can happen to anything like someone reading sparknotes and saying they are a fan of the book, or someone watching a video of a game yet refuse to even try, not beat but try, a videogame

As for your sonic fans, i genuinely feel bad for some of those fans. They really havent gotten anything good. Only decent. Yet they are still stuck with Sega so I suppose all that is left is to like bits of the characters and write fan fiction.

Anyone that acts like a videogame NEEDS a story is just an idiot normalfaggot that probably came from movies and started playing videogames 10 years ago if they aren’t just zoomies.
Videogames did not start out as a medium that told a narrative, its fine if they do and even cool but to act like you’re better because you appreciate the narrative in a videogame “better”? You’re just a normalfaggot who never liked videogames to begin with

Bingo. JP media has much less moral "lessons" which are a foundation of western works.
If a westerner makes a story it's trying to pass its agenda onto the viewer 99% of the time. Japan presents the audience with a concept and don't condescend them about "being a good heckin human being" a lot more often

In regards to media consumption. In the old days, someone might like Mecha, so they pick up mecha shows from their local video store and watch a wide spectrum of content like Patlabor, Mazinger, Gundam and Macross, shows with wildly different themes and tones.

As the internet grew and tagging systems became more prominent people started becoming fans of tags instead of themes. They weren't interested in stories about war, or the struggles of an oppressed people. They were interested in
>Tsundere
>Twintails
>Foreigner
And would pick up shows that met that criteria. As these readers and watchers became authors and animators, they would keep their lower level of media literacy and ambition and just create shows that were a collection of tropes rather than a cohesive story. It's why games that were ripping off DOOM had so much variety to them, while stories that rip off some modern day success like Solo Levelling are all:
>The Necromancer of Seoul Station
>The Necromancer's Solo Life in the Dungeon
>I Alone Level Up

It's also responsible for the creation of template stories with template character like Isekai, Villianess, or those "I was betrayed by my party and am back for revenge" things.

Over-preservation is a curse of the 21st century. This was a main theme of MGS2. Think of what our appreciation of Ancient Greece would be like now if we didn't just have Homer and the big 3 poets: Aeschylus, Euripides, Sophocles. But instead had thousands of authors with thousands of works of slop. Nobody would care about Ancient Greece to filter it down to the gems. The library of Alexandria burning down was a blessing, not a curse. All the slop that was lost, and only the most important works remaining is why Ancient Greece is still appreciated.

He's talking about how some works create a "fandom" that only consumes things (tropes, styles, etc.) that resemble the works they like. But some illiterate retards here think this applies to Evangelion or isekai anime in general, with some even using "shonen" as a genre classification. This theory is decades old already and has been criticized to death. Nevertheless, it's stupid to see a trope and judge a work solely based on that, completely ignoring its narrative or purpose. This "database consumption" isn't exclusively Japanese.

I don't think that's true. Especially for our future generations. The more you prune, the more you're left with what actually matters. Why preserve something with little value? Yes you should preserve Skyrim, but no you should not preserve The Coffin of Andy and Leyley or Battlefield 2042. There's too much slop that people are wasting time on when there's even good media from this generation that people haven't experienced. And it gives us room to appreciate what's from the past. Think of how many people played DMC and have no idea what the implications of the characters being named Dante and Virgil are. Or in the same vein why there's a character called Virgilia in Umineko, and Battler being the representation of Dante. This Dante and Virgil were passed down to us, and we need to choose what we need to pass down to the future.

You inherently have no control over what you can prune or preserve.

>And it gives us room to appreciate what's from the past.
You have always been able to do that, not everyone has a comprehensive overview of all preserved past culture.
>and we need to choose what we need to pass down to the future.
We have no agency in this regard due to copyright and our perspective is inherently tainted by modern culture, publishing and marketing, we are not good adjudicators of what should be preserved.

You're arguing that things not surviving until the present day from hundreds of years ago is good, and are for some reason trying to argue that this process of destruction should be applied hundreds if not thousands of times faster than it has been in the past to media from just a couple of years ago.

>You inherently have no control over what you can prune or preserve.
I agree to some degree. But search engines, Steam reviews, and discussions already facilitate pruning. This is natural-selection but for media. What is important remains solely because people try so much harder to preserve it and continue to talk about it. This is good, but there are archivists that work against this, trying to preserve things that don't matter.

>You have always been able to do that, not everyone has a comprehensive overview of all preserved past culture.

You have to have a conscious effort to. The default state is to experience media that is newly released on a regular basis, then forget about it if it's slop or remember it if it isn't. This is fine. We should not work against this normal behavior by trying to over-archive everything.

>We have no agency in this regard due to copyright and our perspective is inherently tainted by modern culture, publishing and marketing, we are not good adjudicators of what should be preserved.

Whether something gets preserved or not has little effect from copyright. If it is of enough value, it's existence will endure past its copyright age.

>You're arguing that things not surviving until the present day from hundreds of years ago is good, and are for some reason trying to argue that this process of destruction should be applied hundreds if not thousands of times faster than it has been in the past to media from just a couple of years ago.

My claim is more so that you would not be able to look back on important media from the past and claim that only the important things survive, if there weren't also people interested in archiving everything.
Entropy would have claimed the great works of the past as well if everything had been left to personal taste.
>>
>>750313407
>If it is of enough value, it's existence will endure past its copyright age.
Bullshit because plenty of lost media exists thanks to copyshit law. If it weren't for fans willing to break that retarded law, countless shows would have been lost forever.
Sometimes production runs are short, other times a work doesn't get vindicated until much later, other times the producers throw away the masters without releasing a boxset (remember how the BBC overwrote Doctor Who tapes and episodes were recovered only thanks to fans taping the show?), and sometimes the media is simply faulty and dies early (see misprinted discs suffering from discrot and 3DS games dying)
A long time ago I played a find the differences game called Hidden Catch 3 PLUS. I've looked it up several times across the years, but never found anything, and it's still undumped to this day. True, what survived includes both great works and slop. What is evident is that, in an age where duplication was difficult (copying down books by hand), the most copied works were the most important, and resulted in the most copies circulated and preserved. Some slop slipped through by chance, of course.

However, in the 21st century preserving is all to easy. There is no effort to preserving something. Preserving a great work takes the same effort as preserving slop. It's all files that you copy to some digital storage medium and it takes a few clicks.

In this, I agree with Kojima:
>Colonel: "All this junk data preserved in an unfiltered state, growing at an alarming rate."
>Rose: "It will only slow down social progress, reduce the rate of evolution."

We do need filtering, but let it happen naturally, through natural selection. Not by some artificial or algorithmic preservation, and especially not preservation of all the junk data.
>>
>>750277183
Sure, now go ahead and explain all the museums, and the niche stores, and the ongoing publication and celebration of Japanese works, whether manga, anime, or videogame, from decades ago that makes the West look like they can't seen beyond 20 years. Don't confuse corporations with the people. The West, including the supposed "We love our history!" Europeans, are far more myopic and disposable consumption with their entertainment and art than Japan.

It'd be more apt to say that what survived is random or had many derivatives. This is why I said it doesn't really work with copyright, since the only reason a lot of media survived is due to unauthorized duplication and derivation to be held outside of single points of failure.
>However, in the 21st century preserving is all to easy. There is no effort to preserving something. Preserving a great work takes the same effort as preserving slop. It's all files that you copy to some digital storage medium and it takes a few clicks.
Copying being trivial has always increased literacy and production of new media to keep up and that's not a bad thing.
>We do need filtering, but let it happen naturally, through natural selection. Not by some artificial or algorithmic preservation, and especially not preservation of all the junk data.
The natural process of filtering is that everything gets preserved by someone for some reason and that we need to occasionally slap someone upside the head to keep them from taping over the staged Moon Landing tapes with reruns of Friends. There is no reason to intervene in preservation to make it more natural and preserve "what matters", because that's what makes it unnatural.

This is the same as I was stating: great works will be preserved regardless of copyright, because the desire to preserve it will be so great that copyright is meaningless.

>Copying being trivial has always increased literacy and production of new media to keep up and that's not a bad thing.

True, but copying slop is a bad thing, and too much slop is over-archived. I think we both agree here as I don't see you advocating for the preservation of slop.

In general, I am only against over-archiving beyond what is natural. These people are typically called hoarders for physical items, but here digital hoarders more accurately.

>There is no reason to intervene in preservation to make it more natural and preserve "what matters", because that's what makes it unnatural.

Baudrillard's Simulacra describes hyperrealities though rather than simple failure to discern between originals and clones.
The defining characteristic of a hyperreality is that reality has no authority or persuasive power over it despite being definite and experiential rather than hyperreal; indefinite and hypothetical.
Someone in the thrall of a hyperreality is essentially psychotic.

Otaku fan media isn't a hyperreality because the originating material is indefinite and hypothetical.
This seems like a the writings of someone very unfamiliar with Simulacra.

>I don't know what caused it
Tekken 6 having a decomp caused Japan to go full retard and start arguing that the west as a whole is full of immoral monsters because we pirate entertainment we can't legally purchase in any way or simply because we modify games we already own. This has led to them continuing to double down on this thought process by saying all piracy is evil, slavery is more preferable to piracy, companies decide the law, the law is moral because it says it is, you shouldn't be able to obtain anything that isn't being sold anymore, Crunchyroll, Spotify, and other companies started because of piracy shouldn't exist, that entertainment is a passing fad and once it goes away no one should ever be able to enjoy it anymore, that Fair Use is a bad thing for society, and more. It's gotten to the point that they believe if you do not speak Japanese you should not get to enjoy any Japanese content at all and that anyone translating it is a bad and immoral person. Pay no mind to the fact that 56% of the entire Japanese entertainment industry is bankrolled by the west.

Then this whole France protest situation happened in between them going full retard against piracy and not understanding it by calling anyone who uses the Jolly Roger flag during the protests or dressing up as any manga/anime character during the protest as immoral monkeys who constantly abuse copyright infringement. Then you also had Japanese people just outright saying everyone was black-hearted or just being super racist even to the white guys that the French heard of this happening and started completely shitting on any Japanese poster with constant shitposts meant to piss them off.

Ever since the Tekken 6 decomp situation happened everyone online who is Japanese has been going completely retarded in their arguments and opinions. I've even seen people directly saying that the doujin economy isn't hypocritical and copyright infringement even if they don't get permission from devs.

You play a shooter because you like shooters. You play action games because you like action games.
It's fundamentally different from a narrative work that can still have 'more' than just the traits you find appealing and that hook you.

Not implicitly. It's just been heavily normalized.
>You play a shooter because you like shooters. You play action games because you like action games.
This is post-modernism. You are reducing everything to its constituent parts. It's absurd. What does it even mean to "like shooters"? No one criticizes film or book this way. "I like movie X because the character punches with his fists, I dislike movie Y because the character kicks with his legs" Completely absurd.
>It's fundamentally different from a narrative work that can still have 'more' than just the traits you find appealing and that hook you.
This is you seeing gaming as a fidget spinner or a light hearted time waster. You can also engage with gaming from the perspective of games being tools for training your mind, or from the perspective of games having historical significance and analyzing that. These approaches are possible but they are uncommon because game postmodernists effectively have a monopoly on game critique and discussion.
