The other variant is also not ideal since updating base anomaly constantly leads to half of the addons not working anymore every update. So if you want for it to stay a customizable experience and keep as many developers working on it as possible, you will have to stop eventually.
It might be still janky, but I think it is still pretty much the most stable and reliable base to build your own modpack on and it is good that way. Maybe we will get yet another proper overhaul like we did with the transition from CoC to Anomaly.

Personally I think the biggest issue for those freeplay mods is that they focus too much on the sandbox and the modders do not use the tools they have to bang out mods for unique quests. It is a good platform for it, but people prefer to overemphasize the emergent gameplay while neglecting scripted stuff that really would add to the experience.
Even stupid shit like searching for Vasya Ventilators sliced off dick in an anomaly field would give a lot of much needed flavour to the dull dynamic quests.

What is the difference between Oblivion Lost 2.5 and 3.0? Like which has more stuff and why do people not recommend 3.0?

not really removed, but a lot of things were reshaped and changed. 3.0 includes new locations, characters, the whole story was overhauled. keep in mind that 3.0 is in open beta testing and the author has taken a break, for reasons mentioned by other anons in this thread already. there is some unofficial patch that fixes a lot of the issues, but i haven't tried it so can't say much.

The Exception. Super hardcore 1337 professional killer (the player) goes to the zone to kill some German guys. The first half your character acts tough and mean and the second half he softens up a bit. Both make you die of cringe but there are some interesting maps, artifacts, anomalies and guns to enjoy. Exploration is rewarded with nice stashes so it makes roaming around the new maps worth it. For example, I found an integrally supressed western rifle in a stash at the top of a construction building on the first map. Helped a lot in the early game.

The Exception was a solid 8/10 for me, mainly due to the fact the new quests were not just fetch quests but actual quests. The 2 main downsides were about the fact you mentioned, our 1337 killer completely dropped his spaghetti the moment he sniffed a WOMAN?! and the fact the ending was too fast and lackluster (and the last location was skipped unless you explored it for the fun of it). But all the secrets and special artifacts and the new locations were amazing, amazing mod for one playthrough. I wish the bigger rewamped maps were utilized in other mods.

And not in a release version of clear sky level fucked, that was fixed with patches because the game was still fun and mods expanded where devs could not.
S2 on the other hand is unsalvageable. Story and character retcons destroy everything, pacing is broken, combat is awful, ai is a downgrade, zone lost all its draw. So many things done wrong, constant walking just to walk, "boss fights", unrewarding artifact and stash hunts, bland guns with very generic feel behind them, wrong user feedback, cutscenes that feel like school theatre plays. Worse music, undescribably bad visuals (both technical and stylistic ways) and so on. Labs are not scary! How could you fuck up labs?
I don't even care about coupons or yellow paint, the rest is so bad i don't understand what even made people mad about apparently lost soviet elements in the first place.
It is playable, it has some decent moments, especially with ward colonel, but for the most part of is not stalker.
Its ded spess3/borderlands2/me3/failout4/dying light 2/etc all over again.
And the worst part is now everyone will think this is what stalker should be.
Because s2 is new and looks "better", oh and because war so we have to pretend stalker2 is a miracle of game development somehow.
I refuse to accept this game, s2 is not canon. Im mad and sad. I expected nothing, cave in due to boredom and still disappointed to the core.

I have been enjoying Stalker 2 quite a bit, myself.
But I have to ask, is it like Cyberpunk 2077 where if I just do the story missions the game isn't gonna actually put any of the side stuff in my way at any decent rate at all? I'm at the beacons in the swamp part right now and so much of the map is blurred out, just wanna know if I'll get to explore it if I do the main missions or if I have to stop doing main missions for a while and just get lost in silly places.

Unlike cop, there's literally no reason to do sidequests, except maybe journalist stash. Game also punishes you for exploring on your own, so fuck it. Rush through the main quest, try to get some exo near the pripyat, don't hoard stuff, unique guns are not worth it. Get exo, a few protection artifacts, gauss and an assault piece of your choice, then just tear through to the end. Once you reach point of no return game will shower you with spare ammo and medkits so don't try to go packed to the brim with stuff, whatever you do up until the end barely matters.

You get stash marks there very early, but you just can't get some of them due to plot reasons. And whole location is just nothing. Game punishes you by wasting your time. Annoying anomalies and speed modifiers make the whole location one boring slog you have to tear through.
Remember clear sky? Swamps were amazing. And now you get there just to see a cutscene after flipping 4 far cry towers and then go back.
Same about area above cement factory. And burned forest. And yaniv. At Kate's there's some action there.

NTA but I don't get what's so bad about the Swamps. Once the renegate war segment is completed, stalking the marshes is awesome. There are many things to find, lots of stashes, loot, artifact fields. You can fuck around for hours, do odd jobs for Clear Sky members, fights with the few remaining renegades, get jumpscared by boars. The ambient sounds and music are great, and it feels rewarding to return to the Clear Sky base, sell your habar, upgrade your stuff, chill out and listen to campfire conversations with the music from Cold's bar in the background. In my last playthrough I spent so much time there before going to the Cordon that some artifacts had already respawned. You guys are missing out on the essence of CS, it has to be taken slowly. No wonder Vova Vist filters so many people.

In most of the map you can easily take shortcuts through the water and spend one vodka to combat the radiation. That's what I'm talking about, obstacles like these are supposed to induce the player to upgrade the armor, but you'd rather say that it's garbage because you can't run around in a radioactive areas in leather jacket without an issue.

If there was nothing on the map besides these POIs, I would agree. But you have 7 anomaly fields, 60 stashes and some unique hidden loot. It's not just wandering between point A and point B without anything interesting inbetween. The biggest problem with the size of the Swamps is that there are no stamina-boosting artifacts there, so when you run out of energy drinks you have to stand still after running.

Cs swamps are amazing and you simply lack taste.
Its one of the most comfy maps in the trilogy, its like a small self contained zone with almost every activity from the main game.
The only thing it does wrong is faction war mechanic making renegades spawn endlessly.
Its a perfect start for a prequel, never holds you long enough to get boring unless you want to go out and explore, it has great atmosphere and was clearly made with love by developers.
Swamps are the ultimate filter and you are fag.

This is like base SoC but with many, *many* build features built included, map shapes (pripyat is clean for example iirc), sounds, gunplay, mutant behavior (controllers are a tough nut to fight and pseudodogs will give you psi-damage when you stare at them) and more, i really like this, i haven't played shadows addon but if you want to dive into build STALKER and if you are afraid of drastic changes, you can try this before going deep with mods like OLR

It's filled to the brim with hardcore stalker nerds who discuss shit like the history of the game and the buildo documents and such, play like 50 different mods and often even review them or share their modpacks, have actual taste and love stalker for what it is, have pretty funny memes, are anti-gamma etc. You have multiple modmakers there sharing their dev process live, making mods that are so niche you wouldn't have heard of them otherwise. Nah, the 1911 cleanly dethrones it. It's actually fucking stupidly busted: 1-shot dogs to the body, 3-4 shots to kill flesh and boars, 2-3 mags at most to kill a bloodsucker, with a fire rate equal to how fast you can click and a speedy reload so the small mag doesn't even count as a negative factor. The unique one comes with an extended mag and used 9x19mm anyway. It's actually quite insane and has been astounding me at every turn the more I use it.

If you have the dlc then the journalist stash armor is disgustingly good. It weighs nothing and has good protection. You can also get the Duty SEVA in the cement factory, on top of that giant psi tower.

Thank you to the friends here who recommended I just go ahead and buy STALKER 2 on sale when I was apprehensive.
I've enjoyed it; there are problems with it but by far much less than the prior vanilla entries had on their first go.

My only major complaint is outside of doing the story and exploring areas to get good equipment early there isn't a lot to do. The entire zone is empty of any life beyond the same wandering squad of bandits/mercenaries randomly standing in a spot, most rewards for sidequests are very lackluster.

I really dislike how many women and blacks are in the game now, not just because they didn't exist whatsoever in the prior games but because their addition felt forced and pandering.

I also didn't like the whole "WE'RE DOING GOOD HERE IN THE ZONE CMON GUYS" style narrative going on with some groups didn't feel like Stalker at all to me, it felt like Fallout 4 bullshit.

I also really wanted those old mutant concepts from the prior STALKER 2 GSC was working on to be in, those log mimics and that weird T pose tree psychic tree zombie things would've been amazing in the burnt forest and added a lot of atmosphere. The new mutants they did add are very lackluster, and 90% of the time I'm just killing fat rats.

Despite my bitching, I enjoyed a solid 80% of the game and I look forward to some anomaly-style mod of it down the line and a fix on A-Life. Just making the zone feel more alive would swing this into my favorite STALKER game.

They didn't have interiors in vanilla. Some mods feature an edited garbage map that has interiors for those two places and a hideout in a hole in the middle of one of garbage piles (there's a crane sticking out of the hole with a ladder). It's usually radioactive.

I also didn't like how lifeless NPCs were in general, in the prior games you'd have people whipping out from behind walls to fire a few shots then duck back into cover. In this installment they just kind of stand around and strife slowly while shooting at you. I don't think I've seen a single NPC run when there wasn't an emission.
