This game holds up so god damn well visually.

Solid art design goes so far, unfortunately, despite how good the art is in Etrian, I don't think we'd ever see an EO game of this quality.

At best we'll get something of better fidelity, but overly stylized to hide the low budget.

They're usually balanced so that a roll of 2 is a damage loss compared to using a single hit skill, a roll of 3 is average damage and rolls of 4 or 5 are above average damage. In this way you only truly get screwed on 1 out 4 rolls.
Even skills like Squall Volley in EO4 with massive variance in their number of hits are balanced favourably like that. A max rank Silver Arrow is 260% damage, but a max rank Squall Volley (which rolls 6-16 hits) does 50% per hit for a 300% damage minimum even if you only roll the 6 hits.
Nightseeker's Swift Edge in Nexus is yet another example of how they balance multi-hits

No hate but it does that thing of most modern wizardyvanias where dungeons and enemies are overly gloomy, often doing a big mismatch with your player characters, I think part of the EO appeal is that even their darkest dungeons (which I guess would be Fetid Netropolis?) makes sure to add some color and the colorful artstyle of the player characters generously extends to the enemies too.

The dungeons in EO tend to have a very intimate and romantic quality to them, even Fetid Necropolis, though that might be more because of the music. The art direction for EO dungeons sure is lovely and does a lot of the heavy lifting too and even a place like the Hall of Darkness offers a bit of levity like >>536998256 mentioned because of the usually cartoonish monster designs. Part of that is the wizardry influence. Wizardry is a Dark, dingy series with an oppressive atmosphere at all times (In the japanese translation where all the lighthearted jokes were either excised or flew over nip heads) and it left an impression on the japanese for how dungeons are "supposed" to be.

I reached the post game in EO1 HD. I'm happy there's more to explore, that B26F was a tad annoying but I mapped it all out.
Anyway, I hit the level cap. I didn't know it was 70, I just presumed it was 99. It's not necessary to have party members with retirement bonuses is it? It seems like it would take quite a while to train up new party members. I'm fine with grinding sometimes but level 1 to 60+ is a big ask.
I'm not looking for optimal builds but what are some skills I sort of need? Just so I don't have to rest my party members constantly. Thanks.

Swift edge has an average of 720% damage, with 3 rolls (3-5) being negative and 3 rolls being positive (7-9), for either half of the expected damage (360%) at worst or 50% more at max (1080%).
Half of expected at 50% is much worse than 50% more dmg (the opposite of half would be double damage). This makes the whiff roll really really bad.
You also usually only have a limited burst window, or maybe even one turn where you pop things like Final Decree. Getting a bad roll on those specific turns screws you over massively. And ailments don't stick around forever either.
It gets even worse if we compare with shadow bite. Shadow bite does 630% damage. The average of swift edge at 720% is only 14% more damage. Bite costs 16TP, and SE costs 25TP. You are paying significantly more (56%) TP for only 14% more DPS on average WITH a chance of getting completely screwed over.
Yes you can get lucky but most of the time reliability is more important. If you would consistently use the skill every turn you would pull out ahead, but usually that's not realistic. You also cant sleep bomb with SE like with SB, but that's mostly only relevant in this case for NS. The only real upside of multi-hit attacks is that they (usually) can proc chases.
I like the multi-hit effect but as I said before I wish they would tighten the spread to be more consistent. For some reason the game is allergic to having consistent multi-hit attacks.

I always think of 5 Ring Sword when it comes to that, 2 to 10 is way too wide a range for damage, especially with the damage per hit. I'd say 8 to 10 would be ideal, but even if you'd find that too strong then you should at least go with 5 or 6 to 10.

I also forgot to mention in my wall of text that swift edge has -20% accuracy. So that brings the potential even lower and pretty much voids the average 14% DPS increase over shadow bite if you have an occasional miss. Although in practice NS doesn't miss that often due to their stats.

No other skills have these big RNG penalties to them. Skills cant even crit. There are skills like helm splitter with huge accuracy problem but that is something the player can do something about.

you got lied to, there are story exclusive classes but they won't provide a meaningfully different experience, nor is new game+ a particularly transformative experience with those classes ""unlocked"".
That said it's still a reasonable idea cause it's a competent party so you'll be less likely to rage quit due to a shitty party making the game frustratingly difficult. Just be aware that you aren't getting the TRVE etriam experience, story mode is pretty divisive and I don't like it personally.

After the thread on /v/ yesterday I dusted off my copy of III HD and I'm really struggling. I'm on Floor 15/16 and the only one of my five characters who can do good damage is my Zodiac, and even then only with Etheric Charge and if the enemy has an elemental weakness. I'm constantly fishing for instant-kills because otherwise fights drag on too long. Right now my party is

I was playing the same party. It's rough doing damage at that level. I beelined to meteor on my zodiac and had my ninja TP battery the hell out of her and spam any skills with everyone else. I went Zodiac/Glad for charge > meteor for burst damage.

Gladiator/bucc might not pay off til you can get their agi up for pincusions. Glad/Arb probably works out better as front mortor doesn't need that much investment.

Try leveling Ninja's Izuna. Most random encounters will die to it. It's insane as a hard enemy delete button.

Your party right now is very defense and support heavy so it makes sense that you're not doing damage. I'm not sure why you went buccaneer for gladiator sub but for random encounters they'll need sword AOE moves to perform better, or a high level of wild swings if you're using a mace. Charge the first turn, then dark ether the AOE because gladiator have terrible TP pools. Ninja can shutdown enemies on the first turn with their sleep daggers to help setup the second turn. Izuna is good as well and will be more reliable than beheading. You could give your monk some fist skills like breakfire fist or darkness fist to help out with AOE if you want to. A hoplite/ninja isn't going to do much damage no matter what. Subbing them shogun can open them up a bit more offensively with things like great warrior, warrior's might, and kaishaku if you're feeling risky. Kaishaku will definitely help finish enemies off in random encounters but it always has the risk of finishing off your allies.

I've been summoned once again as the #1 Ygg apologist.
Here's a breakdown on Yggs.

>General Information
Yggs are a very good class that's often misunderstood because they work different from the other classes. Unlike other classes that use subclassing to complement their main class, Yggs' main class complements their subclass.
They have the highest HP, highest STR and 2nd highest VIT; while their TEC and AGI is subpar, their LUC is downright terrible and their TP is stuck at 60.

>Strengths and Toolkit
Their main gimmick is binding themselves to passively regenerate TP through Sleep Mode, which heals up to 10TP per bind every turn. This is probably the least impressive part about Yggs and it's mostly just so you don't have to worry about carrying Amritas with you.
The strength of the Ygg lies on their fantastic passives and stats.
Yggs are naturally immune to binds that don't come from their own skills, add to that Virus Scanner 10 (50% ailment resistance) and Yggs are extremely hard to lock down.
Infravision compensates for their subpar AGI by giving them 40% increase to evasion and hit rate at night, making them bulky classes that can also dodge a lot of attacks.
Overheat is an insane passive damage buff and the HP cost isn't nearly as taxing as it seems as long as you have a Hoplite or anyone on healing duty.
Their bots are also surprisingly useful if you're not using the 6th slot in your party. They chase your party's elemental attacks with TEC elemental damage. The bots have the Ygg's stats, so their TEC isn't very high, so to compensate they gave them very high damage numbers (170% TEC damage at level 10) so if you give your Ygg TEC equipment and books the damage can start getting higher.
Lastly, HP Cannon. It's not very good HOWEVER, it's very funny to use against the true final boss.

Highest STR in the game and Infravision makes Blade Rave consistent as all hell and Nine Smashes into an actually reliable option. Also, Overheat > Berserker Vow > Charge > Blade Rave is very funny.
>Ygg/Hop
Arguably the best Hop in the game. Highest HP, 2nd highest VIT, immunity to binds, 50% resistance to all ailments with Virus Scanner and 40% increase to evasion with Infravision makes them an incredibly durable machine.
>Ygg/Monk
One of the best Fist Monks in the game. Having the highest STR means the world with how Fist damage calculation works. But, most importantly, Monks have Ascetic Deeds, at level 10 heals you for 90HP everytime you use a skill, which means that Overheat 9 is a free 40% dmaage buff and Overheat 10 goes from costing 127HP to a measly 37HP for a 50% damage buff.
>Ygg/Bucc
2nd best Swashbuckling user. Look, you can't beat a Shogun/Bucc in terms of Swashbuckling, but you're going Deep City route so this is your next best option if you want a swashbuckler with you.
Data Mining increases crit chance by 10% and makes crits deal 190% damage. So Data Mining, Overheat, Lady Luck and Crit accesories makes them actually hit pretty hard with Swashbuckling.
Also, if you want to summon bots, this is your best way to proc chases while also dealing good damage (Of course, assuming you don't have Shogun unlocked).
One piece of warning though, Overheat activates every time Swashbuckling procs, so leave it at level 6 if you don't have someone to babysit them.

I had an Y/P in my party. It works, but I only had her because I wanted a full Yggdroid party. If you want a full Ygg party it definitely works, there's nothing wrong with it, you have a bulky Princess that's very hard to lock down. But if you're not doing that, just get a regular Princess.

Yggs have the highest STR and Overheat. However, Front Mortar is not very sustainable (16 TP with 2 binds) and Double Action is pretty much not viable.
It can still work, but without Charge, Front Mortar really loses a lot of it's appeal.
You could however have a Snipe/Sharpshooter Y/A in a disable focused party and it could work as well.

Unless you're modding your game or playing a second playthrough you're not having this one in your party, so I put it in the Meh category.
Magatoki works well since you're already going to be exploring mostly at night thanks to Infravision and Daifuhensha makes Yggs stronger and bulkier, and thanks to Infravision they will be able to work as a pseudo dodge tank as well.
They're also a pretty bulky Warrior Might user.
The biggest problem is that Magatoki and Daifuhensha both use different body parts, so TP recovery becomes an issue.
Also, fun fact. Bloody Lance increases the damage of HP Cannon. You're never going to use that unless you're going for that one strategy against the true final boss, but it's funny that the combination of Armoroad's and Deep City's forces can create one of the strongest countermeasures against the Deep Ones.

Stacking TEC equipment doesn't work for Ygg/Zod since your TEC will still be shit in comparison to an actual Zod, it works for bots since bots deal 170% TEC damage which is insane for TEC damage calculations.

Honestly doesn't matter much because bots take a lot of SP so if you want a Bot Ygg it will pretty much just focus on summoning ots with some side things from the subclass since all three bots at level 10, level 10 Resupply, level 10 Sleep Mode and a single point on Rocket Punch and Rocket Jump already take 56 SP. But if you focus on just one elemental bot you can definitely get any subclass. For example, by the endgame I just focused on Red Bot since I had an Ygg/Monk with Breakfire Fist and an Ygg/Bucc with a fire rapier.
I took Zod in my 5-Ygg party just for the convenience of having easily accesible elemental damage to proc bots.

Well, my SD reader decided to do a funny on my and corrupted a good part of the 3DS folders in it, including save games.
I was in what I think is the last or second to last dungeon in EO4 and well... I really don't feel like struggling with the game again just to reach that point.

What's the most broken team composition to steamroll the game and quickly reach the Forgotten Capital?
In the meantime I'm using those programs that by some miracle are able to retrieve deleted and corrupted files from cards in an attempt to get the save files.

Honestly, if you feel burned out just put the game aside for a bit. You will enjoy it more when you feel like picking it up again after some time. If you're just trying to get through as fast as possible you will likely get frustrated before you reach lvl30 regardless.

The skills in 3HD are basically the same. Knighthood got fixed so that it works properly now and Charge/Etheric Charge now are stored until the character uses a move that they can be applied to. A zodiac and/or arbalist are always good choices for reliable damage. It depends on what you're doing with the bucc, you need elemental damage for gun chases. You could also ignore chases and just spam pincushion. Buccs are also very good with limit building when combined with swashbuckling though a shogun/bucc will work better for that.

You should eventually get the stars to 5 but yeah, prioritize singularity and etheric charge first with just a point in each element. Zodiacs will do a ton of damage by combining etheric charge with an elemental limit attack, this will be their main big burst damage.

Another thing to mention about chases is that they use the weapon property so elemental forges will help the damage out. Same thing with princess Arms imbue skills. Chases can't crit though, lady luck will only help their normal attacks.

An elemental arbalist would work well in the last slot as long as you're okay with not having much bind/ailment lockdown.

If you really want to do a good chase party then you'll want a shogun/bucc in the last slot once you unlock shogun. Shogun is both the best chaser and chase feeder due to Second Sword combining well with Swashbuckling. Since your bucc would be the chaser, the shogun would focus on procuring chases with normal attacks that can hit like 2-8 times and each provide a chase. You would need to use forges and imbues to make the attacks elemental so that guns can chase them. Of course, the bucc could just sub shogun and use warriors might instead of their own chases which would work better. I've actually done this before; a gun bucc/shogun with WM that's fed by a shogun/bucc.

Sniper / Runemaster
Build Guard Tango. The party takes a while to get properly rolling but it scales like crazy.
Alternatively swap the Sniper for a Fortress and move the Medic to the back line. It's a less damaging comp, but Dancer/Fortress/Medic/Runemaster in the same party allows them to be incredibly durable and enables a specific cheese for a postgame boss.

EO1 will always have a special place in my heart. Getting rekt by venomous butterflies and orange blob deers. Putting together the small pieces of story and the reveal of lost shinjuku. It was the OG game and story and can't be replicated. Even if it was jank (you didnt notice).
I consider 3/4/5 around the same. They all bring something different and are both good (and bad) in their own way. EO4 is probably the least interesting but the classes are fun and feel good. Don't see why you had trouble progressing there.
EO2 was pretty unimpressive, all the downsides of 1 without the novelty. They fixed the series in EO3 and it was amazing.
Nexus isn't bad but overstayed their welcome, didn't have anything new and made most classes less fun. Didn't play any of the untolds.

I think I just had a skill issue with 4 because it was one of my first etriams; but it was primarily psychological rather than any difficulty because most of the stratums felt very tedious to me, and I wasn't fond of them in an aesthetical sense, so I played on and off.
It does have some of the best class designs in the series though, and oddly 2 felt very rewarding in practice to me (Most likely because my party was haphazardly put together), with my second favorite OST behind 3's.
I essentially agree with everything you said, and I cherish them all still, with 3 being the summit.

And the classes are all insanely good at their job while all having really good synergy potential with other classes.

When it comes to partybuilding and boss fights it's a strong contender for the best in the series. I also really love the visuals of the strata and the music from the original version of 2 which are things 2U inherits due to being a remake though it's more a full blown reimagining using the same setting and general plot. Even story mode is worth playing this time because the cast is decently likeable, has a relatively unorthodox party composition, and Fafnir is a really fun class once it gets going. The cafe stuff is enjoyable and certain foods can open up even more strategies. Wouldn't call it my favorite game but it is close.

That aside, i'm not a fan of the dungeon layouts compared to the original 2. Vanilla 2 had a lot of funky but memorable labyrinthian layouts and some floors were designed to be done in one go to test the player. That's largely lost in 2U in favor of (admittedly nicely-designed) FOE puzzle rooms that start of simple but build on each other as the floor/stratum goes on. They're good in a vacuum but it can be tiring going through so many of them.

I don't put 2 low because I think it's bad, but because I don't think what it has is as interesting to revisit. I love the first four stratums, but the only game with worse build variety is 1 (until the remaster made resting and grinding up backups more tenable, then 1 got the edge). It doesn't have the simple elegance of 1 or the mechanics for replay value of 3 or 5. It's in the same kind of spot as 4, but that one took some wild swings that give it more novelty.

2's a great blobber but I gotta agree with people who say 2U is a massive improvement: it gives the game its unique niche while giving the content more opportunity to shine and be enjoyed on replay.

Some of the reasons why i love V so much is because it's aesthetically different from the rest of the series. One of IV's biggest mistakes was trying to be too similar to the first (and second game by extension) aesthetically for the sake of a new audience. The exotic look and feel of 3 and 5's locales and classes is one of the reasons why i keep coming back to them more than the others. Also a big reason why the town ship from Nexus is cool to me and i'd love to see it in a game that didn't reuse old strata.

I wonder how they would have handled the route split in EO3U's story mode? If I remember right, weren't some characters from both the first two game's parties supposed to show up? It'd have been sick if they each took a different side of the conflict and you had to fight whichever ones you went against. Of course they'd have all gotten jolly with each other on the 3rd route, but at least they could milk the conflict more in the two fun routes.
Then again, given how the first two games treated the story parties more kindly, letting them save people who couldn't be saved in classic, they might've just taken the easy way and had them automatically make the "right" choice...but we'll never know, haha!

I really enjoy DRPGs and I tried getting into Etrian, but my main problem with it is that (as far as I've seen) most dungeons seem very nature-themed.
I know it's dumb as hell, but I can't bring myself to be interested in exploring a forest and the like, I want to be in a dungeon or a tower or some cave or something like that.
Now, I really want to get into the series since everyone praises it so much, so I want to know, which one has the most actual DUNGEON dungeons in the series?

EO5 probably has the least forests. It has, in order: forest, desert, graveyard cave, crystal cave, forest, space.
EO3 has abyssal shrine relatively early which looks like a real dungeon, and a lava cave.
That said, there are a gazillion blobbers with boring skeleton dungeons in all the shades of brown and gray you could ever desire so why force yourself on this one? Having aesthetically pleasing environments is part of the series.

The 2020 games have models and animations like VFD while the DS one has 2D chibi sprite animations which are brisk and nicely animated.

Keep looking around the room, there's a door to the top left. But you might want to also go to the top right as well if you can.
The script unlocks a new Limit skill that you can set on members of your party.

Damn, these games are tough.
I played a bit of 1 on the DS way back then but stopped, trying again with the HD version and the new difficulty settings make the game a joke on the lowest one, and the normal one is kinda tough.
Maybe I'm just not experienced with these types of games, but I always love building my own characters.

Not him but the execution matters. 5's Fetid Necropolis is a great example of an area that could've been a dreary graveyard but we got a stylized black, gray, and purple graveyard with a Pink Floyd-esque ballad as the background music.
