>>537224845It really is interesting isn't it? How do we market video games like that? You don't need it, but you do need it. Retail is an incredible master class in advertising and sales. How is it possible they sell everything? Who is buying all this generic brand? Who is buying all this stuff you wouldn't take a second glance at? But someone does. They wouldn't sell something that doesn't sell. It's like all those fruits and vegetables at the market. You wince at the prices, but someone picks those up. One at a time and before you know it, it's empty. How do we get our video games to be like that? Not the best, but selling as a necessity.
>>537225487>How do weYou don't. You find a publisher with millions of dollars to spend on traditional advertisement.

Okay it took a lot but I have combat back up and running again after refactoring all of my retard code I wrote in college. There's so many improvements I'd probably go over character limit listing it all but big things are:Before, I had the combat logic/calculations, all in one big block with all the animations and everything else that happens between selecting your target and getting booted back to controlling the cursor on the map. Now I can just run through the combat logic without any dependency on the actual characters in the scene which generates a report of exactly what happens at each step of combat that I can just play back by feeding it into a function. Also turn action order is determined separately to future proof for any abilities later on that may alter action order.I also unlocked the forbidden art of multithreading in unity. I've always had a problem when I need to run Dijkstra for a fuckload of units at once. I've messed with it a bunch so I have a very efficient implementation and I have a system where they only recalculate their pathfinding when absolutely necessary but even then Dijkstra is expensive regardless of how good your implementation is if 20+ units have an enemy that can obstruct their path move into their movement range. My implementation only takes a fraction of a millisecond on my PC but I know my PC is better than most people's and also since my game's graphics suck I think my game should be as craptop friendly as possible. Anyway, now it doesn't block the main unity thread so it won't cause and extra long frames, worst case scenario it takes a second to compute but it shouldn't effect framerate, and the total time to calculate will be lower anyway because it's doing more than one in parallel. Most scenarios it'll be doing it while an animation is playing or while the user is stuck in a menu anyway so it should never hold them up.and I went to character limit anyway that's not even half of the stuff I improved :(

how should a godot project be laid out with source control and work files vs export files?like If I make data\sound-design\intro_sequence_godot_2ndpart.wav as my work file and then encode it to data\sound-design\intro_sequence_godot_2ndpart.ogg for export, godot editor recognizes both of them and puts an .import file and the original source file will bloat the exportand where do .psd files for textures go?and where to .blend files used to make the .glb files go?do you even put them in source control? or just leave them in your documents folder? that must be how old games original asset files become lost media and they have to resort to game ripper assets to base their remake on

I had the opportunity to speak to a successful indie dev last night who will remained unnamed (no, not him). He gave me some advice I'd never considered before so I figured I'd share it with you guys.>Find a game (ideally a successful one) that's similar to the game you're making or want to make>Play it during your breaks from working on your own game, but don't just mindlessly play>Find the similarities between it and your own game, but also look for the ways in which it differs>Take special consideration for things like pacing and progression that are difficult to get right>Compared to this game, does your own game have too much downtime? Are there long periods where the player doesn't know what they should be doing?>How does the game you're playing fix those issues, and is that something you could do in your own game?Basically use an existing game as a study to ensure that your own game is as close to the level of quality of what players expect. I thought it was good advice. I hope someone else finds this useful.

>>537257581This is real I became a developer because I'm burnt out on games, I'd play an old classic and end up spending more time writing down my thoughts on the game than actually playing it.When I was a kid I would flip through magazines with no money and I'd want to play the games I saw so bad but I had to wait months before I could afford anything at all. Most people I know get excited about the *idea* of the game. Like there's a sentence that explains "the game in a nutshell" that gets passed around and differentiates it from other games. There's also the visual aspect which is huge like a kid looking at shiny things in a magazine. If you want to get autistic, in Jungian cognitive typology the two versions of Extroverted Perception are: Ne( extroverted intuition) which I would call the awareness of "meaning" or "ideas". This is how your game is differentiated from other games of its "type" (based on Si - experience)and Se( extroverted sensation) which I would call "impact" or "action". This is how your game appears to look and feel (motion is a huge aspect here). This is how your game is differentiated from "reality" (based on Ni - potential)

do people actually understand every shader they use? I know the basics but the constants every shader uses seem so precise. It also seems like most people just make modified copies of others.

>>537274313Yeah, I made them all from scratch. Probably forgot most of it though.
>>537267594>went to a nearby cafe to get a coffeeFUCKING chad devs with a life going outside, having a coffee, probably enjoying the sun meanwhile I haven't been outside in more than 30 days because I'm trying to make a fgucking game, life is so unfair.
>>537274896I drove there and then drove back to my apartment and it isn't even a mile away.
>chadevs enjoying a nice drive while sipping on coffe meanwhile my espresso is cold and disgusting. Stop bragging please, I'm going to crash out
I don't want the intro sequence handler to preload() or even onready load() or even have @export vars with PackedScene as that is an implicit load, as the cutscenes might be big files and load all at once before show any is lame, so I need filepath references, load the first one, switch to it, and while it runs load the second in background, on first finish signal, change to the second, and so on. I noticed that mass effect 1 would have a brief b-roll type cut between the big scenes in its in engine cutscenes at the start of the game, and I think they were doing something similar, at least it gave me the idea.So I usually just have an array of strings and i have to manually copy the path into each entry, then I thought, it is more convenient to drag and drop the file straight in, but that will make an implicit load reference. then I though I could just use a dummy @export variable to receive the drop targets in a toolscript and take the filepath and add it to the array and clear the variable, works well
>>537275090sorryalso it was a cappuccino and I think they used some non-dairy milk. It tasted pretty bad.
>>537274896your productivity will decrease if you don't go outside, like 1 hr at the gym 3x per week will remove probably 10 hours throughout the week of day dreaming gooning, procrastination, loss of focus etc. it affect your hormone levels which affects your drive and motivation.
to coffee drinkers:do you feel like you cannot work and self-motivate yourself if you don't have coffee?I've never really drunk coffee and don't really want to get addicted to caffeine so I'm curious.
I wanna get a bike so I can go for incelrides around my city between dev sessions
>>537273464Source?
>>537275369Honestly right after I drink coffee I feel unable to focus and jitteryIt's when you're coming down (like 45 minutes later) when you can get really productive again
>>537275369I basically only drink coffee as a morning ritual. It's something to look forward to as I eat my breakfast. I also just like the taste of it.Some days I forget to make coffee and I don't feel any different.
how the hell do you troglodytes live like this
>>537275256Thanks boss, I really need to fix my life.
>>537275369I pretty much just drink it for the taste. I've overconsumed caffeine throughout my life and I'm basically immune at this point.
>>537275369Yeah sort of. But I don't know if that's because of the caffeine itself or just because drinking coffee is part of my ritual but I don't feel like my work day has started until I had my coffee and I can't focus. You do get a migraine if you regularly drink coffee and then stop, but it goes away after 3 days and you return to normal. Try it.
>>537275369I started doing Matcha with some fancy honey. Tastes great, can easily have it cold or warm, less anxious caffeine jitters for me.
>>537275369coffee is very useful if you have it only when you need it.if you get used to it, the only effect you'll feel is feeling like shit until you have coffee.this goes for caffeine in general, so energy drinks have pretty much the same effect plus a lot of calories.my advice: stay away from coffee. if you're sleepy, have a 10-15 minute nap. it's the optimum duration for when you need to work.

>>537275592i just helped my father unload shit from his car and I'm just checking the thread before I go to bed its 2am rn, tomorrow I got to do more research on if an asus x99 pro could use 8x 64gb ecc reg ddr4 dram sticks and access all the ram properly if it has an e5 xeon in it, if it does then I might resurrect my old and dead gtx 980 2011-3 PC as my new windows PC and switch my current desktop to linux, because it is all AMD am5 and AMD drivers aren't supported except on linux so I'm kind of screwed staying on windows with AMD, unless I sell my AMD gfx card and get an nvidia one, which I don't want to do that

>>537275369>do you feel like you cannot work>and don't really want to get addictedNo I legit don't feel anything change when I have caffeine in my system, Maybe I'm too young for that or something, the main reason I love it so much is the addiction part, I tried quitting once to see how it feels and it just removed the fun after the addiction wore off, that's kinda what changed my whole view of things, I understood why people liked to smoke, it's not they enjoy the dog shit feeling of the nicotine, it's just the anticipation, opening the pack, hearing the sounds, it all triggers dopamine, and honestly if it's just coffee (arguably healthy for you) why not. It adds a little dopamine to my morning. >>537275393>incelrideslol'd out loud, my buddy went full biketard and never wants to hang out anymore, only go on bike rides and hate it.

We're approaching Demo Day 64, and you'd like to get something back from all your hard effort. I will make a generous donation to your demo if you add a screen at the beginning that says "I'm a farty fart man with a big smelly butt that smells like farts". It must be unskippable and stay present and visible for at least 5 seconds.Note that for any qualifying games I'll be waiting a week to make sure you don't just immediately replace it.I don't want to list an exact amount, because a game where it really doesn't fit in, or going "the extra mile" (fart noises in your soundtrack, especially in a serious game, things like that) will be rewarded more heavily.Life handed me some bounty with Bitcoin and GME, so I'm more than happy to "give a little back" ;)Humiliate yourself for money.>How do I sign up?Just add what I said to your game, and post in the thread at some point: "I'm a farty fart man with a big smelly butt that smells like farts" with a link to your game. I have something that will be looking for exactly that phrase.Add additional notes if you have any such as "I added a fart sound to my music" and how it can be heard for verification.

Wagie Run's Prototype is done. What i mean by that is, the basic mechanic, the main core loop, and 1 level encompassing core mechanics are already done and waiting to be published in demo days. What was the last big indie game to actually grow a healthy community around it? I mean something like Minecraft or Stardew or Rimworld where even to this day people are still playing the game, sharing their creations, making fanart, etc. I'm excluding games like Balatro because those games didn't produce the same sort of community I'm referring to. Balatro is obviously very popular, but barely anyone is making Balatro fanart.
I will never forgive Team Cherry for underpricing their game. They have declared war on all indie developers.

It's useless if there's nothing it leads to (in the case of cookie clicker, a popular clicker game I'm sure you've heard of it, it leads to nothing. Just more numbers, bigger). It's only a means to an end (introducing more intricate toys that lead to more complex interactions and situations) for the purpose of fun.
>>537301496stardew, and that community is barely healthy.
>>537301684They're overpricing their game. Shadow announcing it like this was pretty scummy though since you need 2 weeks notice for valve to change release dates.
>>537301732That's like the opposite of Balatro. There's lots of fanart, but since the game is narrative based there's no replayability and nothing to share that happens to you in the game. Friendly reminder that empathy is one of the most important skills for any creative. If you find yourself struggling to understand why others enjoy certain things that you don't, you're lacking in empathy and need to practice more.
All adult comedy animated sitcoms are ironically ugly. It's far more mainstream than you think.

Pic related for example. It's okay if your product looks hideous as long as it's on purpose and is "funny".
>>537310897only because animation as a whole is seen as "kids only", thanks to disney propagandaso the real "joke" behind family guy is that it's a "kids only" medium being used for adult comedyit also doesn't help that the "toon community" mainly talked about "young adult" cartoons or shit like bluey while ralph bakshi or peter chung are literally whosalso, adult cartoons may be ugly but they'te not as garish as cruelty squad
