The problem with kuro and Van is that the main plot isn't really that good or exciting, who thought it was a good idea to look for magical macguffins for 3 games is beyond me. Rean went from just being a faggot schoolboy to the ancient mech pilot to the war hero to the chosen sacrifice. You can argue that CS plot was dogshit, but at least it felt like we're constantly progressing. Van was good in Kuro 1 because he actually had an agency besides looking for the macguffins and he did leave a good first impressions compared to Rean, but then we got nothing. He's the same spriggan doing the same job all over again and the whole demon lord plotline was paused because falcom clearly doesn't want to spoil the intrigue and I noticed that it's the recurring problem with the series, but Calvard takes it to another level on how many faggots we have in there who know a lot but don't say anything at all. That's why Kai ending managed to blow everyone away, because for the first time we felt the excitement of the plot development. I still like Van as a POV, but there's only so much people can take for doing filler content.

I think things happen in each Calvard game character wise however with Kuro 2 and Kai so many things are locked in bonding events and bonding events just inherently feel like they don't matter and have no impact because they're all optional and rarely impact the main story and they're only really followed up on in the next games bonding events.In previous games when a character had a character moment it usually happened in the main story and involved the whole main cast and you got a dungeon and story segment out of it so it felt like it mattered. Now it's like all the character development just exists in this bonding event pocket dimension instead of the story. It just feels much less satisfying when done this way and I think this is a big reason why the Spriggans have largely failed to connect with people.Honestly wish they'd just shitcan connect events entirely.

At the very least you could quickly rush through the floor, quicker than Märchen Garten was. The biggest issue really was the route slop. Every time shit gets remotely interesting in a route it completely kills any momentum, switching to another route. It got so bad that I lost all motivation whenever that shit happened and made me take a break for 1 or 2 days. Shit like this never happened before for me. Which is also why it took forever to beat this shit game. Just fucking give us one MC from whose perspective we play. Routes are the ultimate pacing killer.

People give the Cold Steel saga a lot of flak. Sometimes for justified reasons. But to me the entire arc feels like one of the most planned out in advance arcs in the entire series. Everything through Cold Steel all the way to Reverie just clicks and feels really satisfying and immersive imo. Not to say the prior arcs don’t too but you know.
