Yeah, the civil suit will just make their lives more difficult. The people living in the US and some EU countries will get fucked by it. But the elephant in the room is the potential for the department of justice to go after them criminally under the RICO act. Which is what I suspect blizzard/microsofts goal is in all of this. The entire premise of the complaint is that the defendants participated in the alleged criminal enterprise. They do mention the use of assets but bringing the RICO act into this lays the ground work for serious criminal charges. Many of the people involved live in countries that have historically been willing to cooperate when it comes to extradition requests and the US does not fuck around when it comes to prosecuting what it deems to be a criminal organization. Of course, it is not up to Microsoft whether or not the DOJ goes after this, but Microsoft can (and certainly will) ask them to. If that happens the people living in places like Russia and Kazakstan are certainly safe, but most of them aren't. Bringing RICO into this leads me to believe there's a bigger goal in this, to bring down the for-profit private server scene entirely. The people involved have been so brazen and have had such poor OPSEC that these would be incredibly easy RICO convictions, and those look very good on a resume. As soon as people from the EU and US end up in US prisons and the legal precedent that all private servers that make money are "criminal organizations" people are going to (rightfully) dip out immediately. Nobody will be willing to do dev work if the threat of prison looms over their heads. It would wreck the entire scene.
