If you're using Blender, I believe the way most would advise is to make the basic unit of your tread, do an array, and then conform it to your desired surface.

I think the main components are

>refraction: unfortunately this is an effect we can't do properly without full path-tracing. games always refract according to surface normal but ignore the medium change, you know, that effect where everything underwater looks "short" when you look on from above. that would require too many pixels we don't have at the bottom of the screen. although I have considered a vertex shader solution where we deform the actual objects under or above water depending on whether the camera is above or below water. this effect would need to be added to every vertex shader in your game. one day I'll try it out.
>caustics that are not just sharp highlights but the rest of the underwater area also needs to be proportionally darkened! this is something that webm related gets wrong. caustics without darkening = you're adding energy from nothing. when I made the webm I hadn't thought about this yet.
>foam. in webm related foam only happens at the peaks of waves. many games put foam at the "edges" of water, using depth values to detect when objects are close to the water surface. imo this always looks horribly fake and I've seen plenty of water irl, paying close attention, that didn't seem to "interact" in this way at all. imo nobody will miss this aspect of foam in games. it's one of those cargo cult traditions now. you do the tutorial and end up using the effect in your game, never asking if it's actually a good idea.

Just a bit of unsolicited feedback, but the art direction you’ve gone with for your cafe so far doesn’t feel very “maid cafe” to me. I’ve always associated maid cafes with bright, warm colors like light browns, tans, yellows, and pastels. What you have right now looks more like an office or an internet cafe. Maybe it’s all placeholder materials, or maybe you like that dark look better and don’t care what I have to say, but I thought I’d share this regardless. I like your game and want you to succeed.

it is vtmb? It is so strange to hear people refer to it as "bloodlines" now given that it was always referred to exclusively as "vtmb" for the past 2 decades... bizarre

for me, the 3 main keys of playing that game were:
1) lots of colored lighting
2) the talking cutscenes
3) the feel of a "first person + over the shoulder gta"

so the remake seems to kinda have the lighting but the haze cheapens the effect in my eyes

now the combat is a lot of sneaking around and take downs

I think it will make or break on the quality of the character writing and how fun all the game mission areas are

it kinda seems to me like they played cp2077 then copied it, the stealth takedowns based combat, the voice in your head narrator, crap like that.

I still want AI music, however none really exists that do what I want. what I want is for something to listen to royalty free music and turn it into a chip tune source like VRC6 or ym2806. Right now music from ai is focused on jazzy compositions and analogue outputs that feel messy. hrm, well godot 3.6 has visual scripting still (they removed it in 4) and godot 3.6 runs on windows 7 and no vulkan/dx12/ogl4 well, and unreal also has blueprints but it is a pretty heavy install

Pretty good I added a yaw feature to my planes, so that they can aim in a variety of ways, I couldn't decide how i wanted to do it, so i made it a toggle where it works smoothly with an automatic return to normal, or it steps where it can be locked into place, and then a third option which just resets and locks it forward. Also worked a lot on a menu to get it to work well with controller or keyboard.

that means you like it? It's just a big plane 1000x1000 facing downwards, and picrel as it's shader material. You feed it 2 noise textures and play around with their color gradient to get the cloud color your like.

Key part here is the distance fade, make sure you set it right so the borders of the big plane aren't visible and faded out. The value on Min you see in picrel is it's size. Play around with the power you apply to it until you are happy with how it looks. Oh and during gameplay make it so it's position is the same as the camera position + whatever the sky's height is.

I'm using GB Studio and I had a bug where one color of the dialog overlay was going transparent and you could see sprites through it

I've been down another rabbit hole, this time learning the very beginner basics of django of all things. my new desktop is windows+amd so it can't do anything AI related. but my old laptop is capable of running "whisperx" to turn .wav -> .srt which I'm trying to use for auto textbox text from my VA. so I don't use that laptop anymore but I can ping it over the network and so I'm trying to be able to call python scripts over the network so I can make a .bat file using curl to send the .wav file and download and save the .srt response to the folder the .wav file came from right next to it.

there is also something called rhubarb which turns .wav into .json of mouth shape at time offset that I want to use to animate the talking avatar in time with the audio file and add calling that to the same .bat file

right now it feels kind of esoteric but I'm hoping it will prove practical and I'll use it a lot. I think its okay to do this stuff if you build on top of it because I want to make myself more productive in the future even if I have to spend a day here and there making these side project tools. Like I don't have any side project games, just main project game and side project automation tools to help with that game

Knowing myself, probably this. I used to upload short animations to a youtube channel for fun. A few years after I stopped one of them got picked up by the algorithm, got over 5 million views, and the channel has since grown to almost 100k subscribers without me doing anything. I haven't uploaded in 6 years and if I came back today I would probably still have a decent audience, but I just don't have the motivation to do it. I don't even know what people use for animating these days. In the past I used an old version of Adobe Flash that I no longer have access to.

Here's what you do:
-You have a bunch of placeholder free music in a folder that the game reads from
-You provide the players a list of the music you want in the game but can't afford
-The players can then replace the music themselves if they actually care and you get away with it

And you know if your game got popular enough that people would host .zip files containing the playlist to make it even less work for those who are technologically impaired

After playing my little crab clicker demo I've come to the conclusion that hand eye coordination motor skill based games like this are too intense to be successful. Even with rougelite elements that kill additional crabs as the waves get bigger, eventually there's a hard limit to the speed of the player which you will hit very quickly. Also fatigue sets in fast which really limits how long the rounds can be and how long they can keep playing for.

Furthermore it's a game that requires a lot of concentration which is not good for casual streamers, they basically like to play games that play themselves while they focus on talking to the chat.

It's a type of game that really belongs on mobile, but then mobile is already super super super saturated with this shit.

Yeah. I've wasted maybe 10-15% of the total money I spent on Fiverr. You can say it's a lot, but my time is worth something too and I saved a lot of time with straightforward hiring on Fiverr vs chasing down some artist on Twitter and hoping he'll honor deadlines because there's no consequences for him.
