The XIII Trilogy, into Versus XIII failing to exist, into XV being massively disappointing on launch did irreparable damage to the franchise. If anything, XVI coming out and being good but not great is course correcting, though adding another Trilogy to the Final Fantasy name (Remake) really does not seem to be doing the series any favors, going by Rebirth's lacking sales, with yet another title on the way. Hopefully SE sees that their "break in case of emergency" button didn't really work and they stop making trilogies and decade-long ordeals in the future.

My take on the "shift away from ATB/turn-based" that FF has slowly undergone since Squaresoft became Square Enix is that Dragon Quest is already the de facto turn-based series. I think the Team Asano games sort of became the "turn-based non-DQ games", and FF became SE's "action" franchise. Even Remake is an action game. Whether you agree with that direction or not is up to you, but that's my take on why it went this way. I just wish that people who stopped liking Final Fantasy 20-25 years ago would just come to terms with that fact and move on, but there are 1-3 people here who can't seem to reconcile this into their psyche.

There isnt enough mechanics to properly design or use new eikon abilitiesexample: shiva. Shiva dodge is good and diamond dust is really good. But her three other abilities are garbage or at most, you already seen them in other abilities. They start to repeat concepts.

The issue I have is that there are little to no real ability synergies or ways to augment or customize them. Lack of using abilities for boss counterplay and total lack of any interactivity with the arenas also doesn’t help. I think XVI’s combat is a good foundation to iterate upon but it’s pretty easy to see why people would come away unsatisfied.
