Last time I stopped playing Coronation Day after falling into a cave with some water. If you dive into the water, you find a key at the bottom of the deep pool, and when you go back up the screen blacks out as you get some spooky text boxes, something like "You're content with dying because something greater will come of it". Then a Mario ghost shows up to talk shit, takes your key, and says you can get it back when you're worthy.
