Something very important I learned over the past year is that the difference between "good" games and "bad" games isn't that the first kind are perfect and the other kind are not, it's all about the attitude of the fanbase and genre preferences. If you take feedback on a platformer game from some faggot who only plays shooters he's going to scream your head off about there being no gameplay, but platformer fans are going to endlessly praise it. I've basically been surfing through tutorials in between and during sessions just actually screwing around in Blender. The sessions just screwing around in Blender are valuable as hell, even in the midst of relative ignorance. Because it's doing rather than being told. If you have something you genuinely want to create, making progress toward that thing is something I find far more valuable than empty measures replicating meaningless things. I've dug around and imported some pre-made 3d models of human characters to populate my void space as I mess around, and it allows me both proportional reference and a sense of coziness with regard to the space. Even though I didn't create them, having the little characters present where I can hit the play button and have them emote amidst what I'm doing always makes me feel a little better.
There's a thought. If you can't find something to dig up, I think a perfect first/second/third project is an armature. And you can just keep coming back and refining it.
As to the plan? The plan is to eventually get something to the point where I could call it passably finished. I'm learning Blender and UE5 at the same time. Been a ride so far. Working in Blender, have an idea, look up how that idea could feasibly be implemented, then toss the idea on the pile and keep working.

Yeah, it breaks when you move it too fast and once you let go, and it settles it will turn the dynamic rope into a mesh, it will also check if any physics bodies you attached to have moved so it can seamlessly re-enable the rope system, it works across sessions as well.

Tried out Hollow Knight and the game is like just ok. Art is alright, animation isn't so bad. Music is mostly a bore, there's some good ones, but the rest are forgettable. The story is kind of compelling, but doesn't explain much about the ghost. The combat is not even really where the game shines. Like it's cool you get different abilities so it's not as hard as playing rank 0 needle and no other charms, but the combat is quite simple and I think that's part of why people like it. The game isn't that difficult, there's just a lot of bs parts. The map isn't that big either, you would only have to backtrack a lot if you were getting lost because once you get the map of the area, it's not hard to know where to go. The only area that's meant to be confusing is deepnest as the map doesn't even work there. I just don't get it. How is this game so renowned? Is it because the game has a lack of flaws? If I didn't know any better, I would have never thought people considered this game to be one of the greatest of all time. I get that the world is kind of cool because you have all these different parts of one kingdom and there's a lot of hidden stuff that expands outwards, but overall a lot of games do that? All I really learned from this was that people are simple and Hollow Knight is a simple game, so people like it. There's never any too difficult segments, the control scheme isn't anything weird, and the money isn't that relevant so death is only really harmful for doing spells. In conclusion, there's no point in trying to clone this game. It looks like people attached to it like a cult for whatever reason. Nothing to take away for your own game.

Fair point. The game does lead you to progress based on what you can do like the mantis claw and you can sequence break if you really know the game well. The enemies teach you how to move with jumping and dashing as well as when it's safe to attack and heal. None of the bosses and enemies feel cheap. I kind of get what you mean. The story is tragic and there's a lot of tragic figures. That should make the player feel certain kinds of emotions and want to continue to fight and sought out a better solution than the initial ending. I didn't 112%, so that's not completed. And no, I don't think the game is easy. I just don't think it's as difficult as a lot of people make it seem like. People make Hollow Knight sound like one of the most difficult games in existence when it's not even close. There's a lot of room for error and it can get really tight sometimes in battles and platforming, but nothing like crazy perfect inputs. If anything, that might be part of the appeal. People have this impression that the game is very difficult and when they overcome the challenges, they feel powerful. It's empowering. In terms of platforming difficulty, Celeste and Geometry dash are higher. For combat, I don't really know. It's a 2D game so comparing it so a 3D game is unfair.

Good point. From what I've noticed, the hardest part of achieving success with indie games is accurate user acquisition. It's easy to get eyes on your game. Just spam it everywhere. The issue is, if your game doesn't have mass-appeal, then the impressions will lead nowhere. Many developers notice this with paid advertisements with games that have niche appeal. Spend $10,000 on ads, and get 300 purchases. Not worth. It's like shooting an arrow at a tank, or striking a knight in his chestplate with a rapier.
You need to, somehow, ensure that the exposure your game receives, is received by the most appropriate audience - people who have the highest odds of enjoying this specific sort of game.
That's it. That's the foundation of effective game promotion. Find the right audience, wherever they might be, and ensure they become fully informed of what your game is. If it's the right audience, they'll engage with the game and support it.

Finished watching that 4 hour indie game showcase and all I can say is that things are looking grim for (western) indieshits.
So much shovelware, so many clones, so many cozy games, so many card battlers, so many pixelshit platformers, so much generic forgettable music, so much uninspired slop.

I now decide to make the "checkpoint gate" for Wagie Run, as a combination of "stop sign", speed bump, and surveillance camera.

Slight addition on the buttons, the blinking effect on coven acquisition now shows the change as well. Also the numbers briefly blink green/red when a unit is spawned/lost. Barely readable in the webm but that is just due to the decoder. Finally, the number for controlled spawners will turn orange if any spawner is blocked due to limit reached or missing artifact. I never got to completely finish a portion of it to make a demo. I got stressed with the art and keep adding more enemies and areas until I got burned out.

I see. I just don't really have any other way to show to people now. I never got any real feedback while developing it and that might have helped to make me lose motivation. The most I got is some friends saying it is really hard, and that could have caused them to become uninterested. The whole thing is in the download link, 12 areas and 6 bosses, should take around 4 to 6 hours to complete.

Why not make a scheduled build every progress. First you make a barely functional main menu, that has "play" and "quit" button (just to navigate to the gameplay scene), and then you build every time you add new feature, even if its just 2 new implemented in the game.

This way, you will still get stressed to make you move forward, but you won't get burned out and lose motivation, from the attention you'll get.

Personally I understand loathing these megajews but realistically what you are complaining about is that you cant solve algorithmic problems on your own without a tutorial. In general? thats what engines are for. theyre for people who dont want to, or cant, solve a bunch of arbitrary algorithmic problems like movement, velocity, collision etc, on their own. they want to let someone ELSE handle that. In general I would highly recommend unreal in your case, because when situations like this happen, you can get off the shelf components that are paid for by (you) which can, supposing you select the right one and one does indeed exist that gets you close to what you want, you can knock on the door of the dev who sold it to you for your random questions.

moving faster diagonal IS good movement, it provides a tradeoff between more rapid movement vs being able to aim where you're moving, it somewhat negates the need for a sprint button. OG console FPS gamers know the advantage of diagonal-faster movement.
