Whenever Rean is not the direct focus of the plot he is the absolute most boring PoV character in the entire series but he also gets the most fleshed out character arc of any protagonist. Van is one of the most fun PoV's to follow and he always has an amusing wisecrack or perspective on something but Falcom just refuse to do anything meaningful with him after Kuro 1 to the point that he barely even feels like a protagonist. Falcom just dropped the ball with both of them imo.

I can't really judge Van cause his arc isn't over yet, but I liked the way he was handled in kuro 1. His backstory and motivation are far more believable than Rean's so I could at least understand why Van acts the way he does. Kuro 2 hurted his character and I'm not even talking about the retarded dead ends (even though they're part of the reason), it's him doing the same mistake at the end with Agnes giving him an earful, it felt really cheap. Kai isn't really Van's game, i guess falcom wanted to reverse Van and Agnès' roles because frankly Van was satisfied with his current life, there was nothing to challenge his status quo so he got comfortable with having the same relationships and job without actively trying to pursue the answers about his demon or even himself. I did like that he constantly reflected on his past mistakes, but I feel like Kai ending should challenge his status quo and break free from the boundaries he set for himself and the others around him.
