Supports are pulled mainly from your friend list, and if you don't have friends then just at random. Set up a support page when you get the chance to show off your favorite servants / the ones you've dumped the most materials into, as a new player nobody expects you to have useful stuff on support, they want you as a friend so you will use their servants.Some general advice:1. Find a servant you really like. It helps a lot with long-term goals after the game slows down. Brand new players are inundated with AP and materials, but it does slow down eventually and then you need a long-term goal to keep you invested. Having a favorite or favorites, is a good way to make the game engaging. This is a lot easier if you have any prior experience with Fate or Type-Moon stuff before, since nearly everything has made it into FGO at this point. 2. Do not spend resources thinly, funnel into your favorites and after them into your most valuable servants that enable you to clear content. Having a small pool of strong, fully enhanced servants is much, much better than having a lot of slightly leveled servants. With enough enhancement basically any servant is useful and can clear content.3. We're 2 years behind the Japanese server, so we have a lot of advance notice about what is coming down the pipeline in terms of limited servants being available on rate-up on the gacha. Save your cash currency, saint quartz (SQ), for an SSR rate up you really care about. Don't spend it carelessly. It's just like with enhancement: funnel everything into as few servants as you can. The gacha can be unforgiving, take as few chances as you can. 4. Roll the FP gacha at least once per day as a new player. You get a free spin daily. Unlike many other gacha, low rarity stuff is still useful in FGO, but especially low rarity servants. Some of them are better than SSRs. Not a joke, btw.

That's the general rule, but sometimes there's more than one mandatory support, sometimes you're forced to use an NPC support as a solo servant, other times you're forced to fight with no support. But those are all edge cases, in 99% of nodes you'll pick 1 support from a list and use up to 5 of your own.Those supports are pulled from your friend list. If your friend list is empty or pretty barren, then it'll be supplemented by random players' servants. The "guest" is a special NPC servant for a story or event quest. You won't see guest options on a generic farming node, for example.
