Kasha recap post.I have this catgirl character named Kasha who I want to use in a number of game projects. I've been building a universe with her since I was in junior high - I think I've had this character for about 24 or 25 years by now. She is a small catgirl with a magic shapeshifting tail who likes playing ball games and lives with a giant tiger woman named Milchi.I have a bunch of Kasha projects being made.. Don't know which to focus on. Wish I could just focus on my fighting game. But I know that if I don't focus on making and releasing a game as complete as I can make it then my fighting game has no hope of being good.I have three projects with my catgirl in various states of development.Kasha vs Kritters - arcade style game about defeating enemies, actively in development, several levels and enemies are made already.Hole-in-Nyan - 3D PS1-style minigolf game, prototype made godot. Trying to figure out how to proceed, want to learn 3D gamedev pipeline.Untitled Kasha "Big Platformer" - this one's a larger game. It is an action platformer in the style of Super Mario World where Kasha treks around the country in search of her mama and meets several adoptive mamas. It's a big classic adventure where she turns her tail into stuff.https://psychojosh.itch.io/kasha-catcha - Tiny gamejam game I made with Kasha/Milchi.https://psychojosh.itch.io/kasha-vs-kritters-alpha-demo - Demo of KVK.

Is it possible that AC8's slow development is a result of the shift to UE5? You know that they'd never let it release if it wasn't silky smooth, and UE5 is a massive piece of shit.
>>538794545I really, really hope they look at the recent cases of botched optimization in other games and actually try, but I dunno. Most Asian games that use UE5 are impacted especially hard with this issue right now and I'm afraid AC8 won't be the exception.

Should AC8 have out-of-plane gameplay between stages? I don't mean anything that takes a ton of development time, but stuff like talking to your wingman, squadron or commanding officers. Reading newspapers. I think it would allow for more character development and worldbuilding than the games typically offer and it means you don't have to look to artbooks or developer interviews.
>>539105747are you sure you would like to play airforce delta strike 2
>>539105747I know it's something I'd want to include if I ever made an Ace-like, but I feel it's not something PA would do. Doesn't seem like the kind of game they like to make. I also envisioned the player's quarters as a diegetic collectable viewer, like Doom Eternal's hub. Defeated Aces and unlocked aircraft would be on display as Scale Models, like in Zero. There'd be a record player to listen to the OST. A Computer to read Codex entries. That sort of thing.
>>539105747part of the enduring ace combat appeal is that it still sticks to its arcade cabinet roots by having zero fluff or filler outside of 2 minute long avg cutscenes in between fighter jet gameplayso no

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LReZ4ejDjpwVideo about the recent GAO report on the F-35 program and its issues. The main thing I get from it is that actual problems with the plane are the software, landing gear, and engine life, while the program is horrendously mismanaged. But saying a US MIC project is mismanaged is like saying water is wet. Apparently the next upgrade package is being heavily scaled back just so it can focus on fixing the landing gear issues.https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-25-107632The GAO report itself if you wanna read for yourself and get all the autistic details.
>>539120202>The main thing I get from it is that actual problems with the plane are the software, landing gear, and engine life,so of course they had the great idea to not go ahead with PWs planned adaptive cycle engine swapout...
>>539122159That would be too smart and actually save money, so of course.
>>539116863You can skip the planes unless you really like them, but the missions are fucking mental with how good they are. The plot is also extremely satisfying.
>>539120202>the next upgrade packageWhat was it supposed to entail?
>>539120202>But saying a US MIC project is mismanaged is like saying water is wet.By definition water is not wet, it makes everything else wet. Which arguably fits US MC even better.
>>539142463I don't the specifics but Block 4 was supposed to include 53 capability upgrades, which was then jacked up to 66, and they were somehow supposes to have all this ready by 2026. Now those Block 4 upgrades aren't expected to come until the 2030's at earliest, and it won't be all of them either. At least that's what I'm understanding from the report, if someone smarter than me has a better understanding hopefully they chime in.>>539142945Good point actually. One thing I really don't like about the report though is that it seems to really downplay the DOD's hand in how the program has been handled. Most of the blame is being put on thr contractors, which is probably true but they aren't blameless either.

When it comes to ace combat (and AC clones) how important are these things?>Realistic military hardware (or 'legally distinct' planes that might as well be the real planes)>Plane choicesWould an AC game that only had like 3 base plane 'types', and many options or upgrades for them be good enough for you, or do you want to be able to pick from a large selection of distinct planes with their own characteristics? Also I guess for you what ARE some of the most important things that make an Ace Combat game what they are other than the basic moment to moment gameplay?
>>539173648>or do you want to be able to pick from a large selection of distinct planes with their own characteristics?definitely this, AC doesnt have the mechanical depth to justify only having a small handful of types to flywhat makes an AC game great to me is having a simple but well performed story, missions that generally hew to what IRL air combat missions usually do, but with the systems involved abstracted to the simplest it can get, and generally mission lengths that dont drag on too long, under 25 minutes i'd say. this lends itself to that "pick up and play" that makes replaying each game so easy and welcoming.fictional designs are also welcome, as long as they actually look cool
>>539173648>Realistic military hardwareExtremely important, I don't mind the concept of original planes but rarely are they actually cooler than the real thing, if real planes aren't an option for one reason or another I'd say something similar to Ace Combat 3's futuristic variants work well, even their weirder adaptions of real planes look alright but as soon as you get to the PA originals everything looks like shit. >Would an AC game that only had like 3 base plane 'types', and many options or upgrades for them be good enough for you?No, Ace Combat's gameplay is too simple for it to work. You need to be at at least War Thunder "realistic" level for it to work and a heavier emphasis on horizontal progression than what you have in 7 or X. Even if all the systems are in place with that little variety I'd expect for the upgrades to at least change how the plane looks too, if I got better maneuverability I'd expect TV engines, slats or something along those lines, if I want to reduce my radar signature I expect internal weapon bays or at least a stealthier looking desing, IRST if I need to increase my standard missile range, etc.
I no longer dream about planes.
>>539106179Yes actually, that game was retarded but it had some neat ideas.
she picked the A-10 for it....
she is not gonna use the a-10 for it..
the lighthouse beckons us
>>539105747Ace Combat 04 through Zero structured their main menus to look like or be reminiscent of terminal software from the 80s and 90s. I would say instead of out-of-plane gameplay segments, lean more heavily into the software theme. Add stuff like:>Digital newspapers >emails communication from important characters (like PS2/PSX era Armored Core games)>"intelligence reports" on SP weapons and aircraft that give more detailed, precise stat numbers compared to what we see in the selection screen (i.e. speed, mobility, stability, etc...) and maybe a five-view drawing of the plane/weapon>relief maps of the terrain for the next mission>a digital Strangereal globe not using satellite imagery, but using lines to represent borders, maybe showing radar of civilian flight traffic, military movements, global weather, etc... something interesting to look at that changes on a per-mission basis>And of course, all the other menu features from previous games: Assault records, medals, timelines, and all that good stuffI think stuff like this would give the player fun reasons to linger on the main menu before a mission, and serves 99% of the purpose of what the out-of-plane gameplay would. If this stuff is archived so that you can see previously unlocked things at any point, this would also let the player revisit and re-contextualize previous lore materials as the campaign progresses and as he does his 2nd, 3rd, 4th play-throughs. Maybe some of the textual stuff is only unlocked on Ace difficulty.
>>539173648>Would an AC game that only had like 3 base plane 'types', and many options or upgrades for them be good enough for youThat would only work if the game had sim characteristics like modeling each plane's unique weapon controls and radars and whatnot, and Ace Combat is not about thatSo no, give me a fuckhuge selection of simple planes instead
>>539173648>Realistic military hardware (or 'legally distinct' planes that might as well be the real planes)Non-negotiable. Even in AC3, two thirds of the plane list were still real fighters and demonstrators with a COFFIN bolted on top of the canopy.>Would an AC game that only had like 3 base plane 'types', and many options or upgrades for them be good enough for youNo. Not because I'm against the idea, but because Project Aces has been trying to make plane customisation work since ACX and Innocent Aces, and has repeatedly failed since to add more depth to the gameplay through those mechanics. Not like this post will stop them from trying again.>what ARE some of the most important things that make an Ace Combat gameThe music, the story, the overall aesthetic, and the briefings.

>>539222386>>539212368>>539177881>>539176860How much does it have to make sense that the game is using realistic aircraft in-universe? If you had a sci-fi story where you were fighting invaders from another planet, and the invaders showed up in an interplanetary blimp and then deployed sukhois would that be too immersion breaking or does that not matter so much?Like Project Wingman is like 500 years in the future and you fly around in an F4 - do you find that problematic?
>>539245326>Like Project Wingman is like 500 years in the future and you fly around in an F4 - do you find that problematic? We're playing these games to fly iconic fighter jets. The problem here lies in the scenario, not the gameplay premise.
>>539246067But I'm asking if that IS a problem for you, or if you don't care and are happy to fly an f4 against the advanced alien forces or whatever? Like O don't think I care, the gameplay would be the same and I'm here for cool fighter planes, but I could imagine some people would care.
>>539245326>the invaders showed up in an interplanetary blimp and then deployed sukhois would that be too immersion breakingYes, but it only applies to them for being aliens with no connection to us and I'd even forgive it if it was an alienfied variant of a plane with a flimsy excuse of them stealing a design that seems to work well in our atmosphere. On the other hand if the human Saturn Defense Force used F-15 shaped spaceships capable of space flight and equipped with lasers instead of a gun with the only reson given being someone thought it'd look cool I'd find it odd but tolerable.
>>539245326>Like Project Wingman is like 500 years in the futureDoes it? I didn't knowThen again I barely had any fucking clue what the story was to begin with
>>539173648>>539245326>>539246695Are you making a game anon?
>>539252734Not really right now. I've built some AC clone mechanics in UE4 a while back, nothing worth writing home about, but fun to fly around in. And as an unrelated thing, for years I've had a sci-fi plot device in mind that afaik is pretty original and would make for cool set pieces and I just realized that the plot device would fit really well into AC style levels as a set piece that also offers some interesting level ideas that would tie into gameplay in a cool way that's not just like a tunnel run. I'm not sure if it's technically even possible to do what I'd want to do though in a game engine, so I've just been pondering what would be realistically able to set things up in a universe that made sense for the kind of tech level I'd need while still fitting into a vague AC-like framework. If I ever did get any of this off the ground I could prototype out the minimum stuff and unknowns and always just pay people to help expand the plane selection if anything seemed promising since it does seem like it's pretty important to people (honestly I almost always just RP as whatever the canon plane for the protag is as soon as it's available so plane selection isn't really that important to me), I always intended to do that for any music and at least some of the art and just using placeholder stuff until things had started to come together pretty substantially.

>>539272196>codexI didn't even realize PW had a codex. Given the writing style of the dialogue, I'm almost fearful to read it. Don't get me wrong, I loved the game and thought the overall story was good, but the dialogue writing and delivery was... not particularly good, to say the least. Like all of the cheese/anime style of AC5 with almost none of the charm. It's further hurt by the shoehorning of pop culture references. It's entirely possible I'm just jaded and cynical, but "Oh Dust Mother, not the bees!" is physically painful to hear every time.
>>539289341I don't mine the art style I have a couple of other plane games that look the same just with no spazzing out like this one does.>Every map is procedurally generated Ughh, a lot of people don't seem to understand what they are doing with this and end in so so to shit areaWhat kills any fun with the game from what I see is how your plane is consistently spazzing out. Otherwise looks like a descent enough time waster of a plane game. IF the plane spazzing is removed or fixed.

you Ace Combat connoisseurs sure know many flight games. Can you recommend any where i am able to customize my plane (in similar fashion as racing games like need for speed and such)? or maybe even build it from scratch.
>>539335490Like this? Its from the After Burner psp game which was a very crappy game to play try it if you want but be warned its bad.
>>539335490SimplePlanes comes to mind.Ace Combat 7 and X also allow some customization, although very little of it is visual
>>539335490Sky Odyssey is the only game I know that has such system, without going into plane creation stuff like Flyout.3 starting planes have nice customization options with different wings, tails, fuselages, propellers and other stuff including custom colour options for liveries. The game itself is great and in my opinion anyone who enjoys flight games should play it.

>>539338721>Sky Odyssey So what is it? An air racing game or some kind?>Planes go from a biplane to the F-117 sure why not
>>539335490There's Flyout but it's a steep learning curve with a lot of things to tweak and it might or might not be abandonware, and once you've built the plane there's nothing really to do with it other than flying around a procedurally generated Earth-sized map

I think if they ever remade/remastered 5, this would be a cool secret alternate ending, even if not canon.
I've finally been getting around to playing Project Wingman lately. I haven't finished it yet, but it's pretty good. It does large scale battles well (Actually 6 did those pretty well too, but I forgot until just now), especially this mission around 10-ish where it's just the big constant dogfight with tons of planes. And there have been a couple of levels with really nice weather effects where it's all dark and stormy beneath the clouds and calm and sunny above them. But I mostly came to mention that I have the same reaction every time in any of these kinds games where you have to fight some ace squadron. WeeeeeeeeThe basic controls aren't totally in place but the core is there minus some nuance. AC has a sort of constant local-nose-up combined with a variable nose-down that changes depending on how horizontal you are, and that's not in right now.It has inertia (hard to tell right now) but no camera lag makes it look a little boring right now.

>more time has passed between the release of ac7 and now than between its announcement and its release>still no concrete news on the new game>PW released a campaign with no extra aircraft and also went radio silentis the arcade flight genre just cursed
>>539920210I don't understand why they don't put out more side-story content. They could release random stories built on the fucking AC5 engine just with slightly different dialog and stories and I'd still pay like 20 or 30 bucks if they did one a year. Like the framework is all there, the games have been perfect since the mid 2000's. It wouldn't fill the void of major mainline entries but so what.
Would suck if AC7 was too successful and is making them greatly scope creep AC8
>>539931838AC7 IS the most successful game of the series. It stands for reasons that Bamco has high expectations for the series from then on.
>>539937206I hope they don't get Capcom-tier delusions about sales figures now. DMC damn near died because they were expecting Call of Duty-tier numbers after the success of DMC3 and DMC4 going multi-platform for the first time, and the series got put on ice when DMC4 ended up disappointing everyone.
>>539931838I just want two things: co-op multiplayer modes, and VR support for the main campaign.
>>539928312i think your vastly underestimating the amount of work needed to produce an acceptable AA videogame and overestimating the size of the audience that would buy short 5 mission campaigns for 30 dollars
What AC games do you replay the most?I've probably played 5 and zero, and maybe 6 the most of any of them, and idk if it's just because I don't have as much time as when I was a kid but while I liked 7 I never had too much of a desire to replay 7.

>>539968870For me it's 7, not the one I like the most but until recently (read: sometime the last couple of years) emulation always had something fucked with it, PCSX2 2.0 or whatever it's called is amazing so now I try to go through all of them together when I can.
>>5399688707 I don’t enjoy as much. I’m always stressing about trying to s rank with an average aircraft. Whereas the ps2 games I can s rank more easily. 7 is just stressful in general.

>>539968870I've now played/replayed through all the mainline old games besides 2, 6, and AH.I think Zero and 4 are the most replayable, 5 was kind of painful on repeat. Half the missions are ass and dialogue option is really pointless. 3 was really cool to experience but I don't feel the need to play it again any time soon.X was surprisingly fun, and had a completionist side with the parts and fictionals that I ended up enjoying a lot.I started the series with 7 and have replayed it maybe 10 times and will probably play it again once I finish the others.

I like AC's fictional designs more than IRL planes.
>>540193461But this fee would be pennies compared to what they have to pay LM & Boeing
>>540193753A frogposter with a normal, if somewhat uncommon opinion. Don't see that everyday. I feel like AC has the most consistently good looking fictional planes, they're a good balance of being somewhat aerodynamically sound while also doing things solely because it looks cool. What's your favorite AC original anon? Mines the Shinden II
>>540193461What are the implications of having real planes in my game? Should I make planes that are all slightly legally distinct just to be safe?
>>540196247The Nosferatu is my pick.
>>540196535Really good choice, it has some sick liveries too.
>>540196535I miss when you could unlock Nosferatu in AC6 and it would just take out half the enemies in the level with 1 special weapon.
>>540196247Wyvern (original, before the sitty AC7 version), Forneus and Falken even though it makes no sense aerodynamically
>>540196501It's a 'better safe than sorry' type deal, I think. Project Wingman got away with using real life designs by just futzing with the naming.AC has mainly been licensing western designs (with all the weird caveats like fellating the Eurofighter Typhoon in the wall of licensing text whenever you boot up AC7 and whatnot) while it seems that the Russian design bureaus don't really give a shit.A lot of people bring up the AM General vs Activision lawsuit when talking about this, but the catch with that is that 1. Activision is a big boy company with a franchise that sells gangbusters and a well-funded legal team and 2. their victory hinges on 'artistic relevance' in depicting a 'realistic war environment'
>>540199702I bring it up just as an example of legal teams being chickenshit, because they have precedent. Plus Japan has entirely different copyright and IP laws so it's not entirely applicable. I can't see Lockmart trying to sue an indie dev for depicting a Raptor though, seems a little too petty even for a big company. >their victory hinges on 'artistic relevance' in depicting a 'realistic war environment'That's a good point. If a real plane is depicted realistically but instead of America vs China it's Ameria vs Chyena does that count as 'realisitic'?
>>540200448Its not so much the plane its the name which believe it or not is trade marked So if your game has a plane is clearly an F-15 and marked as F-15 Eagle in game they can get you if they want too. If your plane which is clearly an F-15 but marked as FF-30 Hawk your safe.
>>540200448>I can't see Lockmart trying to sue an indie dev for depicting a Raptor though, seems a little too petty even for a big company. I can't see it either, but who knows. I do genuinely see it as a 'better safe than sorry' scenario, in my opinion.>If a real plane is depicted realistically but instead of America vs China it's Ameria vs Chyena does that count as 'realisitic'?The way I personally interpret it is that the judge saw Call of Duty's use of the Humvee as appropriate insofar that it was used to accurately depict the US military itself.I think if you get into fictional worlds or nations, you end up in an area that I don't think is covered or addressed by the lawsuit. But then again, I'm not a lawyer and I have zero law training so this is entirely a layman talking fat gobs of shit for all it matters.

how the hell did you guys play this shit on an actual ps2? the analog triggers on the dualshock 2 need to be pressed down way too hard for full thrust, i'm almost considering getting some knock off controller just for digital buttons
I got the basic tracking reticles set up and working. Also bump.
>>540270461Easy for 2 big reasonsFirst the controllers were new then they worked way better. If your playing with a real PS2 controller then like any piece of equipment the older it gets the more it wears out from use and just age. Before my PS2 died a few years ago all 4 of my controllers were rather worm out. Sticks and buttons don't respond as well due to many thousands of hours of play plus the normal wear and tear of age.2nd is their wasn't anything better that was the best you could get back then so how could me or anyone else bitch about it when again that was the best stuff you could buy nothing better existed. The PS3 was big step up in how the controller felt and handled same with PS4 & PS5 controllers
>>540271645>First the controllers were new then they worked way better. If your playing with a real PS2 controller then like any piece of equipment the older it gets the more it wears out from use and just age.Sure, but I actually spent $135(i know) on a controller still in the package, and I confirmed myself that there were no defects with it, all of the analog buttons progressed smoothly from 0-255, the problem is that Ace Combat doesn't seem to give you max thrust until you're hitting 200+ at least, and you have to be consciously pressing down at all times for that. I guess the big problem here is that I played the PS2 trilogy for the first time on PCSX2 using a Dualsense, so it's hard to get used to the analog thrust.
>>540272080I refer to my 2nd part thenNothing better existed then that was just how it was. Tech improves over time and makes things easier as you have found out first hand.>>540270529All those targets boxes.......

>>540283643The B-36 wasn't the size of a mountain was itA normal sized nuclear powered plane is orders of magnitude more feasible from the logistics and manufacture point of view than the 1201, there was just no way that plane was going to become a reality
