it doesn't sing, sadly

>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as A Hat in Time, Animal Well, Baba Is You, Balatro, Battle Brothers, Cave Story, Celeste, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkest Dungeon, Darkwood, Dead Cells, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Hades, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hotline Miami, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Loop Hero, Machinarium, Monster Train, Noita, Nuclear Throne, OFF, OneShot, Rain World, Shovel Knight, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, The Witness, Void Stranger, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle, roguelite, shmup, 4x / RTS / city-builders, and RPGMaker games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

Yeah, that's siralim ultimate. A few people here have played it. It's extremely autistic, like the kind of autism where it's unplayable if you aren't aware of 1000 or more monster traits for your build. There's basically no story, it's just grind. The patch added stuff to the endgame and a bunch of game modes (including easy and hard mode) that require making a new save to play and added new currency to replace the current way cosmetics and rare monsters work. Personally I got stuck at realm 180 and gave up.

Sandbox games where you can recruit allies to build an army to create your own government and overthrow other governments like mount and blade? Is Kenshi similar to that?
>>

God, Horizon's Gate is such a great game. And it has grown an amazing modding scene since its launch days. 70 hours in and feels like I have tons left to explore. I can hardly put it down every night before going to bed.

>>
>>538133862

>>
>>538131040
Not really. The scale is completely different. While in warband youre supposed to throw hundreds of peasants in the meatgrinder, in kenshi you're supposed to actually gear your dudes and not let them die. Your average squad isn't going to have more than a dozen members. Without mods, it'd be pointless too since you engage most enemies 1v1. Exceptions being giant enemies and ranged combat, which also kinda breaks the game.
>create your own government
Sure, though it's pretty pointless aside from rp'ing.
>overthrow other governments
Not really. At most you can kill or capture specific NPCs which will result in a specific city being taken over by another faction.

silkosng wastes so much of your time, I'm not running to the judge again
also who thought adding a sekiro-style resource only needed to replenish already limited tools was a good idea
>>
>>538150054
I am in act 2 and all the new stuff they added are just garbage
The ammo mechanic is very, very bad. It turns difficult fights into pure tedium because every time you die you lose ammo and the game is extremely stingy with giving you ammo. You need to kill like 20 enemies WITHOUT using any ammo to get back resources for 1 full rotation and that is annoying.
The bosses are reasonable but in act 2 some gauntlets get really crazy. If the Judge is like a 7-8/10 difficulty then a gauntlet I faced is like 20/10. It keeps going and going and the basic trash mob combos create insane amount of RNG so you will get hit.
I'm probably halfway or 2/3 through act 2 but honestly Silksong has been disappointing. The main issue with the game is the economy sucks big cocks.
The cost of benches and fast travels alone is already sucking you dry. Then there are sidequests that suck your money, key items that cost crazy amount and so on.
I've been going on farming binges and it still isn't enough. The ammo part sucks big time. I run around with 1000 rosaries and a few checkpoints later I'm down to 0. And I'm constantly out of ammo because enemies drop very little amount of it while quests cost too much.
The worst bits: quest rewards give peanut. Finding a secret room with a chest gives peanut. LMAO 50 rosaries from a big chest? 1 encounter is like 40-50 and constant farming is not enough. So many exploration reward is just these chests with no reward.
>>
>>538153387
Slow down. Concentrate on dodging the bosses for a second and look at their patterns. As for grinding, it exists but as someone who loves Dawn of Sorrow, Silksong's is more than tolerable

>Got into a room containing nothing (yet?)
Got the wall-jump, made it into the room normally, and now suddenly that room allows access to another area. It could have been a cool sequence breaking moment but so far no attempts have been rewarded, looks like Team Cherry want to be in completer control this time. Most I've gotten is an early extra mask but going from 5 to 6 makes no difference when there are so many double damage attacks, you still die in 3 hits. And one extra silk spool which makes no difference. Every other avenue I've tried is properly locked.

Off the top of my head, here are a few games id recommend thay would be safe for a normalfag as far as themes and general gameplay goes;
There is no game:wrong dimension
Stanley Parable
Spiritfarer: farewell edition
Silence
Röki
Pikuniku
Naiad
Moral Dilemma: the interview
Jusant
The Invincible
Hand of Doom
Firewatch
Caravan Sandwitch
Beholder 2

Nost of them arent exactly adventure games in the traditional sense, but id be damned if she doesnt have a good time playing most of them. Still id recommend you look them up and get your own idea of how they are, as you're the best positioned to know wether she'll like them or not.
>>

>Have exactly enough money to buy the map.
All is forgiven. Anyone else think the game suffers from having too much going on? I can name basically every HK npc, the world felt 'lonely' so each character stood out more. Silksong is more densely packed, there is more to see but the areas and characters are forgettable in comparison. Undeniable improvement gamekeeper wise though, the platforming and basic enemies have more variety and depth.

Hey /indie/. Finally managed to beat Cave Story on Hard Mode. It removes Missiles and all health upgrades (except for the one +5 you get from Jenka's dog near the end of the game), effectively making most of the game a no-hit run without your highest DPS weapon.

Doing this leaves me with a surreal feeling of accomplishment. Growing up I could never beat Hell and Ballos on Hard Mode in the DSi version. Recently dug up my 3DS, loaded up some custom firmware, and did a few runs of Cave Story for old times' sake. Finally I did a Hard Mode run, got filtered hard for a while by the Core since I always go for the Spur vice the Machine Gun, and after countless attempts landed that golden run where it all lined up. Hell, for the final boss I even set the 3DS version to the 4:3 aspect ratio and the DSi control scheme to pay honor to that retarded kid who could never seal the deal all those years ago.

Didn't really know who else to tell this besides you fags. Don't really know who else would appreciate and empathize with this sort of dumb shit about a 21-year-old indie platforming title. Thanks for reading my blog, and best of luck with your games.

What is Kenshi anyway? I've heard so much about this game but also fucking nothing at the same time. It's on sale right now.
>>
>>538167854
Since the last time I played they've added a special mode where you can get a large variety of effects that are typically upside + downside, though the severity of the upside and downside tend to vary. That middle one means my guys are going to age one year every single in game day which might make play completely impossible, but I took it as I'm intensely curious how much exactly it reduces medicine tolerance by. Depending on how much by and how difficult it's going to be for me to urgently grab some life and morrow pills or something, this is either going to be insanely OP or completely unworkable.

Either way I might restart as I didn't get offered the main modifier I heard about which was the main reason I got the urge to return to the game, but for now it's good to experiment and figure out how to play again.

My irk that's regularly seen in many titles over the years:
Auto-saving consumption of consumables. This results in vicious loop where if you have trouble in defeating the boss, you become LESS and LESS powerful, leading to even more trouble than before. "Poor get poorer" situation.
I'll take "no auto-saving whatsoever" over "auto-saving on death".

It's fun, would recommend, the only reason I stopped playing originally is because I'd run out of new things to learn. This new Heavenly Chaos mode adds a lot of interesting new stuff, the modifier I'm most interested in is one that starts me off with a bunch of rare materials (special boss drops for stronger qi gathering in a cultivation room) with the tradeoff that all the sects other than the DLC sect start at -700 rep with you, so you're getting attacked fairly hard from like day three.

As it is I really need to get my shit into gear, literally my entire sect is going to be dead to old age by the end of the year if I don't pick up the pace and get my hands on life extending medicine or something. It's basically day 5 and I've not done shit hardly, oh god oh fuck.

+4, there's an extra immortal option that gives you up to four extra random disciples but they each have problems with them, it's still work taking them for the extra hands, and the last one I invited back to my sect as a labourer and unlike pic related they didn't get stuck behind a mountain and die.

Oh right, also I forgot to mention that it's a canyon map rather than a plains one. I've done plains every time and I want a change, plus part of my strategy is I'm hoping to dig up lots of caskets from the mountains and get the Heaven Stealing law early.

Managed to cobble together an array to finish off playing today, the downside to a canyon map is there's not 500 spirit trees everywhere so I've had to scrape together everything on the entire map to pay for this ghetto array. At least it's something.

>the increased aging thing doesn't also speed up trib timer, right?
No, it just means that by the end of the first year, my 20 year olds will be 100 years old, or more likely dead of old age around early winter if I don't hurry the fuck up and find some sort of a supply of life pills or something.

>fucked up that it applies to outers too
Yep, but honestly it would be absurdly broken as fuck if it didn't. Even if it doesn't reduce the resistances by that much it sounds incredible to me already, lowering them all by just about 10% per item would already make it way, way easier to start eating sun pills pre-core, you could make incredible cultivators with a tiny fraction of the effort and the only catch is that you'd have to force feed every outer you want to keep (preferably) a refined Morrow pill or something.
I also get the feeling that it will be a bigger drop than 10% per item, I'm looking forward to it.

It's not even the only modifier, one gives absolutely everyone who joins my sect +10 qi sense but everyone's pretty hungry all of the time, and the other lets me equip additional talismans with the tradeoff of not being able to manually draw them. The great painter mod might completely bypass that downside I'm not sure, and even if it doesn't I can loot T12 talismans of my choosing off of enemy cultivators or just roll the dice repeatedly for what I want and then be able to equip 4 (more?) talismans to everyone.

>i suspect you're gonna be doing a lot of recruitment
Probably. The main way to bypass the whole age problem that I can see is to keep hiring new blood until I solve the need for life pills, the only problem is that the achievement I'm going for is time gated and I only have the first three years to clear it, so I can't fuck around.

>i wonder if it hits other sects too, i know there's that story npc that dies of old age
It honestly might, I could potentially check but forgot to do so earlier.

Meme review aside, it's one of the few true sandbox games around. There's literally no plot, main quest line or whatever. You start with a perfectly ordinary guy and do whatever you want to do. Go be a miner, a pickpocket, a trader, a murderhobo or whatever you feel like. RP to your heart's content, cause that's what the game is about.
It also has a lot of grinding. Your starting dude is weaker than starving bandits, the weakest enemy in the game.

Yeah, that's one thing that definitely dates it. Obscure secrets with obtuse prerequisites sure aren't common any more, with everyone looking for a more organic/in-game way to hint at other paths. While it's technically possible to do that in Cave Story, it's realistically only learned on a second playthrough or some forum online.

I usually don't go lower than 2x2 so it's not that bad, but yes it can get tedious. These arches are the most complicated ones the rest are stuff like making each side of a wall have a different texture and those are fast. I might go back and add more details at some point, but that's a long term project.
I don't use them, but there are mods that make chiseling faster. Even save designs so you don't have to chisel 100 blocks manually.

Jeremy Blaunstein, most pseudo-military terms in metal gear comes from him because the original is just completely dry for example the codec is just called wireless communication. He also translated symphony of the night, which was very rushed and full of typo like "I smell you're blood". The entire intro is completely rewritten and has nothing to do with the original and it full of empty intellectual references. The line "What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets" come from the French book "Antimemoires" by André Malraux, famous writer, politician and liar "Qu'est-ce qu'un homme? Un misérable petit tas de secrets ...", he also changed a lot of things in the translation of shadow heart and silent hill. Some of the changes he made in his translations were a bit questionable like when he changed big boss' impotence into a coma. He was the cast director for a lot of those games.
He clearly wanted to be a writer instead of a translator.

Translating a book or a game is different from translating a tutorial. You're translating the meaning (which may even hold cultural significance) in another language while trying to convey the same emotion.
Like how do you translate a double meaning? an idiom? a joke needs the full cultural context to be understood? You have to be able to write for the audience that is going to read your translation.

It's from a different time, japanese publishers were famously not giving much of a shit about the quality of their overseas exports, they had someone translate the games and then shipped it without double checking.
Let's be honest, MGS and Castlevania wouldn't be as cult if they didn't have these, as the dude definitely wanted to write someone special. They could've gone with the blandest japanese translation where everything is very matter of fact and unfunny, instead we got what cemented Kojima's style in the west even though he didn't write these words.

Kojima hated the translation and he became a control freak because of that.
There's also plenty of changes that were made because the Blaunstein thought the original was "stupid". For example Zanzibarland is translated as Zanzibar the African country because Jeremy thought the original was dumb.
He was definitively not the worst translator of that time period but I wouldn't say he was good at doing his job. At least he didn't throw away the script and rewrite the entire game like the "translator" of skies of arcadia who literally made shit up as he went and created a ton of plot holes.

Quite the opposite actually, it would be insanely easy to launder money via video games, especially nowadays with the international reach and digital distribution. You could pump the sales number up like crazy and none would be the wiser, especially with indies that arent designed with a specific demographic in mind so sales peppered across the world isnt too shocking, and would give a good alibi that make tracking distribution way harder for a foreign or local government.

There is also the method of using in-game currencies and cosmetic items. I wont bother going on about this more than this as you obviously do not understand how that kind of stuff work.

Now you're being so disingenuous I cant believe for a moment you said that in good faith, nor will I bother to argue how your false analogy would never actually happens if you were laundering money as it would make it beyond obvious you're doing just that.
