Polux trees destroy pollution as in when a tile gets polluted the tree will clear that tile of pollution so it becomes normal. They have a radius they do this in and the process is not fast. In vanilla supposedly you need slightly more than one polux tree per toxic generator. Having lots of mechs will rapidly overwhelm three polux trees by themselves.

the truth is, the way storage is done in rimworld is not very good. fifty wood, which is enough to build an entire room, takes up less space than two bowler hats. there's no fix without admitting that it's broken - it's broken because rimworld items have no concept of volume.

What I meant was that nothing in the mod does anything that should be able to cause performance issues. Many kinds of filth including animal filth are already flagged to disappear in rain and after a period of time in the base game. The mod just adds those flags to other filth types.
It's not impossible for it to be a bad mod interaction, but chances are that it's completely unrelated to that mod and your performance fluctuated due to the adding/removing/shuffling of other mods.
TPS alone isn't really a good metric for mod performance in the first place, if there are issues it's better to check performance analyzer to pinpoint what is eating your ticks.
And FPS is pretty much irrelevant.
That's getting off topic though, if everything is working and you're happy with it then all is well, I just wanted to point it out so you don't get halfway through a run only to find out the problem had only temporarily disappeared.

Which adaptive mods are you using? The only adaptive storage I find I have issues with is the Adpative Primitive Storage cellars because they limit their usage to one pawn at a time and all other haul jobs to them are blocked until the one haul job is completed.

Pretty much all the mod performance information comes out of Dub's discord so you might want to check there.
Also, performance shouldn't change much between game versions unless the mod got a big update or overhaul.
Even the ones you mentioned, last I checked VVE barely had any code and mostly relies on vehicle framework, and psycasts expanded wasn't that bad for performance and it was the add-on mods that were really bad.

this is my current base, I plan to make a full square, and for now I have:
