Archaon charging with Swords of Chaos + their ability is great. Massive speed, and much more speed during charge. Archaon's able to immediately go to the target unhindered while the Knights clear way. People rag on the Swords of Chaos but I think they're actually good, they're consistently getting great value, and much more than other Knights. They are however much more of a 'glass cannon' of sorts compared to all other types of Knights. I find they die/get damaged much easier, but deal much more damage. Need more management than even lances.

I have like 2k hours across Total Warhammer games and simply had enough of it. No updates/dlcs CA creates, make want to play TWW anymore. I'm just not in a mood for it anymore at all. Tried to play few campaigns recently, but got bored. Their shitty updates breaking my modlist time and time again annoys me greatly and a prospect of rebuilding it every time I want to play even further dissuades me from starting next campaigns.
The only other TW I like is Med2 which I already played for a similar amount of time before I got steam version even. I hate antiquity and don't care for their diversity quotas 3k and soigun titles

I used to be an active poster here, but I haven't posted here regularly in like 2 years. I assume that many others feel similar. New Total War titles are needed.
Announce 40k and Med3 already for fucks sake.

So I went insane and purchased all 3 games with all of their DLCs.
My question is, I would like to play every game in order at least once, and try every race in their debut game at least for one or two campaigns.

I would say at this point... there is no reason to play Warhammer I. The Warhammer II Vortex campaign has a lot of story content that isn't in Warhammer III. Warhammer III has the huge 'grand campaign' Immortal Empires that most people play, and its own story campaign (Realm of Chaos).

Many would probably disagree with me, but I would actually say that WH2 is worth playing a couple times for the Vortex campaign, which is very different from the map in WH3. Basically a lot of the lands the west (not-Atlantis, not-Africa, not-South America, not-North America) are very squished and kinda underwhelming. Its wroth trying out.
But if you want to play anything in the old world, yeah, 3 is the best choice.

They cant be corrupted but they can be manipulated. Take a look at Mazdamundi for example, hes extremely racist and aggressive to everything in Lustria that isnt an Old Ones creation, exhibiting things like willing to genocide to keep Lustria from being changed and always dealing with magic. That doesnt mean he cant be manipulated but the race as a whole technically has no emotions, so its not like temptation is an issue in the first place and Khorne would have taken advantage of his seeming bloodlust for anything not meant to be in Lustria according to The Great Plan and Tzeentch would have tempted him through how close he is to magic.

I finally got total warhammer 3, just finished empire campaign on very hard and I gotta say out of all the three games I enjoy this version the least. The map just looks like shit and theres too much random garbage around, not comfy at all. Stress inducing slop, the ui looks like shit too , why isnt there a fucking quest tab like in 2

Coast are this weird thing where it's actually a horde faction but you still get to build up provinces if you want to. It's not optimal or particularly beneficial, but you can if you want.
If it has one of the special settlements it's worth developing, otherwise you build the T1 eco building in the capital (if that) and move on.

What I usually do is conquer islands only. Feels thematic. Of course, as Harkon you also kinda have to secure the Vampire Coast, but it's not too difficult when you get the full province with garrisons and full corruption.

I can't think of anything recruited by the Cult of Sotek building chain that isn't outclassed by something in the Great Beasts building chain. And typically there's only room for one or the other. I usually just build Cult of Sotek buildings in provinces I don't actually plan on recruiting in for the global post-battle loot.

Dread saurians are better than people make them out to be when microed right, but it is true that they lack the versatility you get from the beasts chain. And ancient salamanders aren't as good in melee as the other ranged dinos but they work better as artillery imo because of the firing arc and explosion damage and high speed, plus if you want to you can combine them with solar engines or something but I prefer to just group a few ancient salamanders together

Mazdamundi campaign is going great so far, didnt expect to make this much progress but ive made my way to Skulltaker, revived Gor-Rok who died to him and Ive basically cornered the last of his army in Harkons area, also Skrolks about to declare war on me I can feel it. Rn I have a NAP with Rakarth while I finish off Skulltaker then eventually go to war with the Skaven. When are they making Saurus Warriors and the building related to it a T1 building? Its really dumb how I need a T3 settlement to field shielded Saurus Warriors and Temple Guards feel really lackluster for being a supposed T4. Its pretty disappointing given Im playing Mazdamundi only to see that Temple Guards are actually worse than Saurus Warriors with shields when you have all the tech tree + red line buffs. Kroxigors are fun, albeit surprisingly squishy, youd think theyd be tankier given theyre huge fucking crocodiles but they get the job done. been using this as my second army to deal wirh Skulltaker and having a blast especially since this Kroxigor general has cunning so hes tankier and can hold the line incredibly well. I was also using Red Crested Skinks and they seem fun too albeit way less tanky and meant for flanking. >>538227965

If you really care about how the individual armies have changed over the years, if you care on the evolution of the battle maps and the world map, then yeah start with TWW1 and climb up, while also making sure to play the newest factions every time you play a new title.
Immortal Empires is not that good,
the modded TOW campaign is better.
Just remember, some factions have been reworked so much you might have to re-learn some of their unit comps and tech trees.
The Empire first of them all.

WH1 is definitely worth playing because you can only get that old world feel from there (or mods). The end-game crisis in WH1 is so far unsurpassed. And also just the opportunity to experience some of the factions in their pre-powercreep stage is worth it (for example Vampire Counts).
WH2 is also worth it. The Vortex map is actually a really fun map to play on (the main Vortex quest sucks though but you can ignore it and some factions don't even engage in the Vortex quest such as Vampire Coast).
WH2 is buggy though. One of the most game-breaking bugs is that AI Tomb Kings factions will inexplicably stop recruiting armies so they suddenly become punching bags, even Settra's faction which can completely take the fun out of a campaign if you're playing something like Repanse.

This. WH1 is still worth playing. Lightning-fast turn times and best overarching campaign. You have clear early-, mid- and endgame (consolidate, take out the mid-big-bad like Vcounts for Empire, then prepare for endgame), every major Lord gets tons of quest battles and there's sense in making alliances instead of just blobbing (since you cant occupy mountainous climate as humans and vice versa). WH1 also still has balance more akin to tabletops: Armor-piercing is rare so armored units are very valuable and more difficult to stop, theres asymmetric balance instead of nearly everyone getting ranged ap + elite infantry + couple SEMs, and the mini-campaign that comes with WH1 (Athel-Loren expanded) is great fun. Of course WH3 is superior in many other ways, but there are still some things that are unique to WH1 that make it worth playing.

Yes and not only that there's no immortality skill point for generic lords. On the flipside this gives purpose to specialized assassin heroes and bodyguard retinue. I always run with as many banshees as I can recruit and have them assassinate all enemy heroes that have the assassinate hero action (the wound hero action can't perma your generic lords).

They're the worst one now that Kangs got buffed, and even then I think pre-rework Kangs were still stronger than the Coast by turn 25. Nothing works right. Treasure maps are shit, undercities are shit, settlements are shit, heroes are shit and you can't get enough caps, lords are average, coastal setllements are ok but compete with pirate undercities, techs are mostly shit, upgrading your settlements doesn't help. They're still stuck in WH2 where they still were the worst. Bit of both. Witch Elves have their own rampage potion which is great, but even better is Hellebron has the single most fun innate ability in the game. The units that 1v1 chaos warriors as such do get held-up, but when breaks in the line appear (which will be quick) then you use those units to wrap around to the ass of the warriors and it's gg no re.

I absolutely detest the warband recruitment mechanic of WoC and its vassal system, it's the sole reason I barely play them, awful, just awful. The warband upgrades are good though and should be implemented game-wide to all factions, like upgrading a lower spearmanni to halberd, it's crazy when you think about it that you can't upgrade a saurus warriors to a saurus warriors (shields) and you have to entirely disband and re-recruit basically the same unit.

If you have 2-3 adjacent provinces with high corruption, you can instantly recruit a decent army already, and then upgrade it further later. And this is not counting gifted units. In dark fortress territory this is even stronger, but ultimately unnecessary since by the time you get T4-5 buildings you already have so many recruitment/xp buffs anyways, and you can spread corruption so quickly.
The vassals are just there to protect your dark fortresses and give you allied units, they are hardcoded to be defensive. You just need to vassalize/subjugate whenever given the chance, and raze everything you conquer, and give your vassals xp from the dilemmas since you don't need xp anyways. Your vassals as one whole will colonize everything and snowball as the player would, but only if you let them.

He doesn't need to blunderbussy to reliably miss at range. At this point in the game every lord of note is riding something, and they'll usually try to beat on him if he's alone. The trick is to kite them away from their army, let them get very close, then turn on fire at will and pop enchanted ballistics to ammo dump into them. Once they're down Petey can roll around their infantry casting Wind of Trenchgun.

This was a lot easier than I expected it to be, I did one time play an Oxyotl campaign in early WH3 to near completion but I feel like that's cheating to compare it to other Ligger campaigns (and in this case, Mazdamundi's), he's the only one to have a cool and slightly more balanced teleportation system compared to the newer bullshit ones CA has added. Early game fucking sucks but they give you decent enough troops to deal with it early on and while economy never really gets good until you have like 20+ settlements going, I feel like the major issue Im having is that I don't really have time to stop and recruit their big monsters on account of being railroaded into conflicts, the campaign felt like I was constantly having to deal with big threats that just had a shit ton of armies (Yuan Bo then Markus then Skulltaker then Skrolk) where I just had no time to recruit their big monsters. Also Temple Guards either need buffs or to be brought down to and T1/T2 for Saurus Warriors + a buff to the red line and tech tree for Temple Guards, its really sad how cool they look but the only ones worth grabbing are really the blessed variant and the RoR, even then they're outperformed by the Blessed variants of Saurus Warriors. Still had my fun but if I revisit the liggers I want to pick a campaign thats a bit more comfortable than Mazdamundi, playing him is fun as hell however.

I think theres a cool system that was just outright abandoned, I remember when Daniel was first revealed and his mechanics people were not only looking forward to it but the idea being used as like a gear system for other Lords in the game. At the end of the day his mechanic ends being the worst one because theres nothing interesting about the body parts. You use whats optimal and it makes you a worse version of better LLs at the end of the day that has to specialize when other LLs can do what he does but better with less effort. Its also lame that the fall back is "just use mods" because CA has shown at times they can fix things up but if GW mandated theyre not allowed to touch the faction like they did with VCoast, then thats just extremely gay.

Sounds good in practice but in reality this scenario never materializes and even if it does it doesn't warrant taking the unit over something that will win you the battle harder instead.
The main 2 reasons why chasing fleeing units doesn't really happen is because the enemy will fight to the death until they're almost wiped out no matter what the player does or doesn't do and the other reason is AR is 1000 times more effective at destroying everything in the enemy stack than any chaser can hope to achieve.

The AI will easily run out food, so their armies will starve, recruit shit stacks, sometimes completely of slaves, and generally be kinda cowardly.
I realize recommending an overhaul out of the gate might seem weird but I would HIGHLY encourage you to pick up Divide et Impera right away.
There is a bunch of submods as well, like disabling pirate factions, which I recommend grabbing.

The generic beatsticks are fine, they have good campaign and cav buffs, I think arch lector is best with master engineer being comparably more applicable and just better than the huntsman general though you'll probably get more use out of the engineer around mid to end game

I thought I hated playing with the WoC but I have come around and I'm enjoying them a lot, playing with Be'lakor and it's actually a very fun campaign. Very rough start if you try to take on Bretonia first, better go after Norsca and get some dark fortresses first. And I got around the warband recruit system, kinda.
Love the portals, makes you feel like a cartoon villain who just causes havoc, opens a portal and takes refuge in his dark fortress to plan his next evil move.

The race is very fun but a lot of the campaigns feel pretty railroaded because you essentially have to go where the Dark Fortresses are which is Chaos Wastes and Norsca. Fun to play once but a little repetitive. Vassal mechanics are also dogwater and just feel like something you bother with only because normal settlements are mostly utterly worthless to you and/or because your faction effects give you bonuses for it.

Is vampire counts going to get anything new any time soon?
I play them almost exclusively, and I was playing with someone who plays dwarves, and they seem to have a lot more mechanics.
Vampires have raise dead, which is synonymous with global recruitment. Blood kisses which "just" gives you access to powerful lords. But no unique diplomatic mechanics, no unique economic mechanics, no unique item mechanics, vlad has a whole two quests and all they do is give him two pieces of (admittedly quite nice) gear. No access to the funky settlement-in-a-settlement stuff. It just feels very anemic. The faction is just paint the map with raise dead.

So I'm playing Chaos Dwarfs, Drazhaoth specifically. Is it me or are Infernal Castellan useless aside from their campaign bonus? I don't really see why I'd put these niggas in my army aside from moving further on the map. They don't get a lot of kills, they don't do a ton of damage and they don't really have a battlefield niche.

Rush the Restock ability for extra ammo for your arty.
They still aren't great but between that and the campaign boost they're worth taking IMO, the other lords and heros also get a lot of mobility to murder backlines so it's nice to have something to encourage the frontline.

Movement buff alone is a good enough reason to always have one but you are correct, they aren't that good in battle beyond gaining the ability later on to replenish ammo for your other ranged units.
They get two specializations. The close range one is okay but it is a niche that the rest of your army doesn't have trouble filling already.
The sniper specialization is better for doing chip damage to enemy single entities and lords since Chorfs don't have any good assassins other than Gorduz.

Black Library gives its authors a surprising amount of creative freedom, so any disconnect or inconsistencies can probably be explained by that.
Since you mention the nagash books, I will use Arkhan as an example. In the End Times main lore books, Arkhan is completely loyal to Nagash, and looks forward to serving him after he conquers the world.
But in the ET novels, Arkhan sorta dislikes Nagash, or is at least tired of him, and is only serving Nagash so that his master will allow him to die.
Pic related is from the main lorebook, but you won't find Novel Arkhan thinking like this.
The romance between Arkhan and Neferata is also, AFAIK, a Black Library invention.
Warhammer Fantasy, like 40k, is kind of a patched together setting, and though Games Workshop can be autisticly anal about some things, they are surprisingly lax about others.

They're your generalist anti-large beatstick. Chorfs actually lack anti-large melee options, which really isn't a problem because large entities die to gunlines anyways. Their stats are decent but their usefulness falls off as the campaign goes on.
If you aren't fighting ogres then I usually just stick it on the flank to protect my artillery from random cav charges.
At the very least they have lower upkeep than actual Bull Centaur units. I wind up just using them as agents later in the campaign.

Bretonnia is entirely free (Repanse is probably the most fun in 2) and pretty fun even though they kinda got powercrept out of relevance by WH3. High Elves have some of their better stuff DLC locked (e.g. Archmage lords and Sisters of Avelorn doomstacks) but Alith Anar and Imrik are both FLC, centered around base game or FLC units anyway so you don't need Sisters quite as much, and are super fun. The only faction from them you really need DLC to make properly shine imo is Skaven (Ikit/Clan Skryre's units are basically a must for them), you're not gimping yourself too hard without it for most of the WH1/2 armies otherwise.

Surprisingly no. The Necrarchs and Strigoi got books but not the fucking Blood Dragons for some reason, altough he he does appear in the Neferata and Master of Death books. They're by Reynolds, and have their moments (there's a scene with Neferata and Arkhan I quite like) but I prefer the ultra loyal Arkhan, so I ultimately didnt finish them.

I need them for army movement and growth, but they don't seem very useful in battles.
For that matter neither do wights or necromancers. Vampires just seem to overshadow both by being pretty good flying melee heroes with life leech and the black sun spell.

they made alcadizzar drink the false elixir of life but he was immune and that caused the expulsion of vampires from nehekhara, and not the fact that the necromancy being discovered and was an affront the gods
they made neferata pine after alcadizzar, which doesnt make any sense because of similar circumstances of the above, and not vashaesh which the prior story from the aforementioned rpg book, and he is the progentior of the von carstein bloodline
theres probably more, but you get the idea, all of this was relatively nebulous canon because of the 7th, but by 8th it was all retconned by tomb kings throwing down a timeline

The unholy lodestone one is great and should probably be in every army though it's better as a mount, the healing stacks with a mortis engine. The basic one is fine in a shit army if you don't have access to the better one, it'll do more than another unit of skeletons.

The biggest chore I find for chorfs is just that you have no replenishment hero aside of Gorduz. But yeah what I like about the bulltaurs (and the hero) is that they are tanky as fuck cavalry. This was many patches ago but I consistently could send them off to the flanks and they would just about never die to enemy cavalry unless they were getting double whammied by ranged.

I saw Louen Leoncoeur at a blacksmith in Couronne yesterday.

I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for fiefs or anything.

He said, "Oh, like you’re doing now?" I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "huh? huh? huh?" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the store with like fifteen identical longswords in his hands without paying.

The peasant girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like "M'Lord, you need to pay for those first." At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the swords and weigh it on her scale, he stopped her and told her to weigh them each individually "to prevent any magical infetterence," and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she weighed each sword and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

After paying for the swords he proceeded to leave the store and throw all of them in the garbage. Haven't seen him since.

I think RTW2 is where it tips over because general skills and army traditions really let you push the ranged rape on certain army comps
On DEI you even have hybrid troops like shielded spearmen that carry bows, you can make very viable armies that are basically all either hybrid or dedicated archers
And horse archer armies with Parthia or the steppe tribes, forget about it
