I practice shen mid a lot and when I go mid as shen I generally take aftershock since I'm vs ranged AP.My ultimate goal on 1st back is to get a tiamat and a ruby crystal, but that doesn't always happen. Tiamat is good but only in conjunction with a ruby crystal on the same buy. If you get just a tiamat as shen mid then you have low survivability during a period which is supposed to be your strong point.The reason you want tiamat is because it allows you a 3rd way to kill minions, which can catch your opponent off guard and / or allow you to last hit without being punished for it.One minion I might hit repeatedly with normal auto attacks so that it goes down lower HP than he thought before he could punish me. Another minion I might press Q and kill it higher HP than he thought I could with a normal auto. And then finally, sometimes you can use the tiamat active to last hit a minion thats slightly far away to prevent yourself from being harassed. All 3 of these are important to know while you block / absorb damage with ki barrier. Absorbing damage is important with the ki barrier passive; If you have second wind and then absorb a gangplank Q with low hp for example with ki barrier, you will take very little damage and begin to actually heal off your opponents harass.Heres a webm where I move backwards a little bit after seeing a fight starting out. The purpose of shen mid is to push the lane repeatedly and force the mid laner to not leave. Then when shen ult is up you ult out and keep them there pushing the wave. Mid laners are not used to creep wave manipulation, and a common tactic is for them to push the wave mid and try to collapse bot. You can hold the minions as shen in the opposite direction they are running before the turret however, and they will be forced to run back to stop you from denying them CS. If you have shen ult you either force them to engage with your shen ult back, or run back mid and take a creep score loss for no reason. It's win / win.
