I think chatbots just give you something to "do" with them, so it doesn't feel as much like an exercise in futility making all of these characters. You can share them with others and let people have their own adventures with them, it feels way more meaningful and less self-indulgent than just making a bunch of characters and letting them rot. Even if you just use them yourself, that's a goal to work towards and have fun with.
