It took me 200 hours to complete Umineko. I picked up this massive visual novel because Ryukishi, the writer of Umineko is also the writer of the upcoming Silent Hill F. At first, I thought I could finish Umineko and still have enough time to get through Higurashi before SHF, but honestly, I don’t think I can commit another two months to a VN right now or ever for that matter.Umineko is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to rate. It feels like there are two versions of the story, like Schrödinger’s cats. In one, I see Umineko as one of the most ambitious and thematically rich works I’ve ever read; deconstructing murder mysteries, layered with incredible subtext and philosophy that you rarely find anywhere else. In the other, I see its flaws: the horrendous pacing, self-indulgent writing, needlessly long expositions, and the way it hammers the reader with obvious points, repeating the same ideas and reusing the same tricks for each murder mystery.Finishing Umineko left me both ten times more excited for Silent Hill F and ten times more cautious. On one hand, Ryukishi’s high-concept storytelling is unlike anything else in the industry. On the other, his tendency to push philosophy to extremes can really test your patience. If I didn't find the final episode to be so mind numbingly boring, I would've called it a masterpiece even with its plethora of flaws, but that final episode puts a dent on my feelings. It's still good and some of its sections are truly great but it had the potential to be a life changing experience.

This partly explains the repetiveness; but I believe R07 also just wrote the same thing multiple times in a streak of productiveness, then ended up with multiple variants and didn't feel like editing it. Still it certainly had its moments even though I found the parts with allegories (in a literal, Dante-sque sense) exhausting and way too long and padded.
