You can cheese him without ever using a tool. If you sit in the maggot water under the ledge at the very edge of the room, virtually none of his attacks can hit you. The only one is when he occasionally randomly pops out of the water right under you, but you can swim to dodge it and then lodge yourself back into the corner. If you just wait to punish his suck attack with a quick hit, he will literally never touch you for the entire fight. It’s laughably easy.

I beat the boss on 4th try so I was wildly unpracticed at the route and it took just over a minute (add a few seconds to climb up from the bench) - this is with failing a jump and checking the map halfway through as I went in a different direction
there's practically no difficulty here, it's not even remotely as annoying as, say, entire coral gauntlet just to get to the boss

>Hunter
7/10 good default crest, both upgrades bump it up to 8
>Reaper
6.5/10 great range, hitboxes can be a bit wonky, takes some getting used to, a bit slow for me personally
>Wanderer
10/10 no notes
>Beast
4/10 for now, I haven't used it enough, the pogo is unreliable at best and the lack of a real heal was too intimidating. In subsequent playthroughs I'll give it a better shot.
>Architect
8.5/10 tools are broken, 3 tools and the ability to craft more on the fly is super broken, drilling is very fun
>Witch
7/10 I really love the moveset, especially the pogo, I didn't use it much this playthrough, so might change my opinion later
>Shaman
9/10 why did we have to get it so late, I had already beaten every boss before the final one by the time I found it NG+ mode when
>>
>>538889264
It's a fairly long climb, and one that sends you all the way back to the start if you screw up, which is easy to do with the random-ass mosquitos around. It's involved and unforgiving.
>but you can do it fast!
That doesn't matter. The speed of a runback is only a small part of how hard or bad a runback is.

>>538889652
You gotta platform quickly. It's a test of your needle dash, and pf how well you've internalized the platforming mechanics in this game. Can you judge what you need to do as soon as you see it? If not, you're gonna have a bad time.
Bring the wall-clinging charm, it helps. The speedy dash one helps considerably less, it's mostly a vertical race. Bring the longer, stronger heal one too to make the little silk you get go further. The treck from the first bench to the second is probably the hardest stretch, so don't give up.
>>
>>538890168
What's your problem with it? It has the best down slash in the game and the most useful binding.

>>538890394
Is shaman really that good? I got annoyed with the binding. It's probably bad on purpose because of everything else but it's probably the best for movement since you get double distance with a pogo.
>>
>>538889756
Both reaper and beast are the two meme crests
Widow is trivialized by being near/on a wall, almost nothing can touch you there. Kind of a shame as it’s a fun boss otherwise
>>
why the fuck does the high halls gauntlet have so many waves

>>
>>538888387
It gets better at mid game when you have access to more tools and tool slots so you can spam their final phases to death. Early game bosses do (did?) feel like they have a little too much health though.

>>
>>538890945
Beast is better than reaper, because it has an actual niche. Reaper is just "why" tier
>>
>>538890871
Reaper has a normal heal so it’s better than beast but you attack at the speed of a dead cripple and the extra range doesn’t matter
wanderer is strictly better, and by a very significant margin - same moveset but much faster, ie more damage, more silk, more everything
>but short range
doesn’t matter. I don’t even use longclaw that’s how little it matters in practice (somewhat surprising desu, but then longclaw is a shitty 10% buff so)
>>
>>538891073
It's only risky if you don't know positioning.

Architect too big fan of the attacks, and tools are my favorite part of the game
>>
>>538891558
Yeah but it's boring.
>>
>>538891356
This isn’t dark souls where a slow sword does 3x the damage, you’re just being slow for absolutely no gain. The only “benefit” of reaper is its special silk generation after binding but honestly it’s kind of garbage
reaper actively makes the game harder, it’s a noob trap for people who can’t deal with hunter pogo and never tried wanderer because they think the range disadvantage matters
>>
>>538891356
What do you MEAN required? Why would it be required if the fucking strikes deal the same damage as any other crest?? That's just fucking stupid. Why would I use a wanderer with significantly less DPS?
>>
>>538891743
that is factual indeed
>>
I'm trying to use architect and i keep accidentally reloading my tools instead of healing it's killed me multiple times now
>>
>>538891265
>you attack at the speed of a dead cripple
You massively overstate it's slowness.
>and the extra range doesn’t matter
And massively understate it's range.

>>538891283
I love witch, but I'm not about to pretend the heal isn't risky. You can make it work, but it's fucking hard use, and only gets harder as you get further in the game and the bosses get faster.
>>
>>538891283
Yeah sure, if you "git gud" then the crest choice barely matters at all.
>>
>>538891697
I like tools but the cost to use them sucks. I stopped using architect after losing all my beast shards.

>>538891781
It has larger range and knock back making it safe when other crests would be unsafe. Which is why it's used over other things.
>>
>>538891781
The range disadvantage DOES matter but only in the sense that you have to account for it.

I think the real detriment of the Wanderer crest is only one red slot.
>>
Played through most of the game with reaper but beat the final boss with shaman despite never using a single silk skill during the fight

Shaman has the most fun moveset in the whole game followed up by architect which sadly gets overshadowed by its tool spam (i might do a 2nd playthrough and build architect for attacks only the drill htis are incredible)
>>
>>538891558
Beast compares actually. Outperforms even. Just put on a weighted bracelet and facetank shit. If you don't need to pogo a lot it can be amazing. I solved several bosses with it
>>
what do you even get by beating Groal?

Item for the true end, an alternate entrance to Putrified Ducts.
>>
>>538891946
>>538891932
Switch to wanderer NOW and go play with it for half an hour. I guarantee you won’t go back to reaper. It does more damage, it lets you avoid more damage, it gives you more silk, it even gives you a lot unintender parries for free since you mash attack so quickly. The only downside is that it’s so brainlessly strong you probably won’t switch to anything else because it feels horrible to go to a slower crest after gettibg used to a fast one, and all crests are slow compared to wanderer.

I can accept people shilling weird stuff like architect or witch cause they clearly have a niche, but people saying reaper is good are objectively wrong. It has absolutely no upsides over other crests as best I can tell.
>>
>>538892264
I only started noticing how "slow" reaper was when i swapped to it in the final boss fight just to see how my "main style" would work
I was committed to beating it with only shamans base kit & reaper really did feel a bit too clunky but thats probably cuz i built up like an hour of muscle memory on shaman before that
Reaper staggers stuff so much faster than any other style & the range + passive makes healing so much easier

the only style I would genuinely consider bad is Beast because it has no room for customization outside of your 1 blue slot in vesticrest

Reaper's biggest strengths is pogo attack and dash attack.

Maps are there so you explore the zone first before knowing everything about it instantly, which would spoil a lot of exploration
compass needing a charm slot is inexcusable tho

The one thing I think Reaper is better for is for doing upward attacks. The extra range helps there. I always misstime my up attacks with Wanderer. I either miss or overcompensate and ram my face in some bugs asshole.

Wanderer slaps in every other situation though. But Reaper attacks makes cool whoosh noises I guess.

I always refer to Super Metroid, as I think that game is the God of all 2D exploration games and is the shining standard every other game should be compared to.

In Super Metroid, you could find the map station and reveal a huge portion of the map. However, you could still explore manually and just explore room by room, completing the map little by little.

Silksong just outright disables your map key when you're in a zone where you have not yet located Map Cunt. And you've got to pay for maps too, which makes it even more annoying if you find her and haven't got the correct number of anal beads.

Oh. Yeah, that’s fair. None of his moves are hard to dodge, except maybe a bad combo of shots and followup dash, but he’s SO fucking fast.
I think the big difference between Hollow Knight bosses is that speed. In HK, once you figure a boss out, you typically find a pretty gentle rhythm. In Silksong, even when you know a boss inside and out, they’re still zipping around faster than you can think.
>>
>>538908417
i think he's fair but sometimes he'll fly sideways while a conch is bouncing around and it's so fast you have to pick the correct angle to jump in like a second which is pretty demanding

>>538907220
Dice are actually pretty good for gauntlets like the Forum and Weighted Belt may not be as good as Steady Body was in the original but it's still good. Climbing grip helps in a lot of platforming segments. Magnet Brooch and Shard Pendant are perfectly fine when you don't need anything else.

>Silk, a higher being, establishes Pharloom
>it’s an industrial theocratic shithole where everyone and everything is devoted to Silk
>local bugs brought under her sway, bugs from elsewhere brought here by force, Silk’s silk implanted in them all to make devotion to her genetic and inheritable, and uplifts some spiders to become the Weavers, her favored servants
>Weavers come to hate this shit, secretly try and fail to break free, and eventually just flee the kingdom outright, some of them making it to Hallownest, leading to Hornet’s birth

I’m pretty sure I’ve got all that right, but what I’m not clear on at all is how the kingdom then falls to ruin. Why has Silk taken direct control of everything? Why is she sending out parties to retrieve weavers? What is The Haunting?

If I’m missing crucial plot shit that comes latter then just say that, don’t spoil me.

From what I understand Silk is a desperate posessive god who views the Weavers as her children/property and she seems genuinely sad to have been abandoned. The Bellheart bug says that the memories he touched were strange and sad which lines up with her silkheart lines (Better a child spun mad than none), I think its kind of a slight twist on how Radiance took to being abandoned. Instead of immense rage, there is immense sorrow. She seems to have sought out Hornet for the purpose of having a Weaver child once more. The confusing part of this for me is I thought Widow was a Weaver, just tortured and twisted through experimentation, and Silk didnt give a fuck about her.

>I’m not clear on at all is how the kingdom then falls to ruin.
Silk drove her most skilled servants away, and she starts taking direct control of the kingdom as a way to cope. Maybe being childless has something to do with why she drove those people away, I don't know. But the main point is that even though she's controlling them, she doesn't actually know any of the things that the controlled bugs did so all she can do is puppet their corpses in an increasingly decaying palace. So she has her little toys putting on a display, parading around the Choral Chambers like nothing's wrong, like a massive dollhouse. Meanwhile the only things keeping that little world running are a knackered old bug, a rusting architect, and an ancient, bedridden conductor.
>>
>>538933045
I feel like the story makes more sense if Grand Mother Silk can't endlessly create silk, only manipulate it. This would explain:
1.) Why the Citadel's denizens experimenting on themselves with silk is so plot-critical
2.) Why the Whiteward doesn't just sew silk into bugs, but extract it out of the bugs that they kill. The Whiteward is directly above Greymoor, where other bugs are tasked with collecting and spooling the dregs of silk, ensuring nothing goes to waste.
3.) The necessity of capturing and "staking to service" anyone who is even part weaver and able to produce silk. Not only does weavers' silk allow the Citadel to continue its decadent way of life (already borne on the backs of the lower castes), it allows GMS to sustain Lace's life.

>>538934565

>>
>>538934687
GMS is desperate to have children of her own, spawning the Weavers from regular spiders, as well as handcrafting Lace to fill that role. GMS might have other reasons for capturing bugs with Weaver heritage, but the main reason is very clearly that she wants to have a child to call her own.

>>538934749

The key is to just not move until you have to. Matador him and pogo when he charges. Try to bait his platform destructions on one side of the arena so you don't have to deal with gaps. Whenever you jump, if possible, try to land as close to where you were as you can. Let the hits gradually roll in. The difficulty is that you need to conserve silk to keep oneshotting the adds so you can't really heal nor use tools. It's a game of patience and consistency. If you can oneshot the adds, he only does like 2 things. If you can't oneshot the adds, come back later.

Do every single quest on the boards for all 3 towns. Note: for the Bellhart quests, this requires donating at least 1 relic and doing at least 1 delivery quest for the twins, otherwise they won't appear. If you own a house in Bellhart and have killed the Far Fields beastfly, and have the Fixer's little statue, you're on the right track.
Do at least one Bellhart delivery quest
Get the flea circus to move to Pale Lake.
Complete the map merchant's quest, which means finding her in every location and doing the follow up.

So does this imply that The Abyss is under everything in the world? Was that a thing I didn't catch from the first game, or is this new?
>>
>>538941685
Why is there a weavernest anyway?
>>

I don't think anything in the first game implied that directly, but The Abyss is the absolute lowest part of the world, so it tracks that it could be under everything, which also fits with the Radiance being the sun and being the highest point contrasting The Abyss as its Ancient Enemy as the lowest point of the world.

I guess that would explain why Hornet immediately knew where to go.
Refresh my memory, by the way, because it's been awhile. The Void is an incredibly powerful force with no will of it's own, right? It acts, it eats, but it doesn't think at all. The Pale King used it to make the Knights in HK, who did end up having will, but they've all either died or returned to the Void by now and presumably ceased to be after Ghost led the Void to the Radiance. And then there's that shit where something something Godhome accidentally ended up giving the Void a controlling sentience as a whole, but who the hell knows how canon that is. Am I getting this right?

I think the Abyss/Void has/had some form of sentience or will, but it's either very scattered or was scattered at some point, as Radiance calls it an enemy, which implies that there was conflict between them, and presumably The Radiance didn't just fight an ocean of blackness for kicks. It's possible she did win in the past and scattered its will, which is why it's kept at bay by the lighthouse

I think Bilewater would be a better recieved area if the muck resistance charm didnt exist. That way it doesnt feel as though the area is intentionally unfair because you had to seek out a cheat for it first. Is there any point of Cross-Stitch? The duration is too short, it can't be used against any attacks that can't be parried with a normal attack, it uses up Silk even if it didn't trigger counterattack. Better to just parry normally, no Silk use, it will damage the enemy if you fail to time it right, etc. Only positives and no negatives, unlike Cross-Stitch.

the closest bench is the one you have to swim through maggot water, activate one or two traps, and then breakable wall into a room filled with cocoons with dead pilgrims, which itself has a breakable wall into a previous section with an item in one of the cocoons

for 1st phase Delver's Drill helps a lot if you're using a crest with 2 red slots. Reaper is probably ideal for having both 2 reds and an easy pogo. I don't know what that was the goal because all it's done is sour my opinion on the game really hard and made me lose respect for them. But that's clearly what they were aiming for.
>>
silk hearts are pretty underwhelming for how rare and important the game treats them
>>
>>538989292
What gauntlet? You beat the drill fly rematch, walk into the tower, collect your tool, and leave.
>>
>>538989640
you can't do that in cogworks? why?
>>
>>538989640
Tried it. You're right. Refilled my health though thankfully.
So yeah, floated down like a balloon filed with boron.
Thanks guys.

getting the melody at the top sets your checkpoint up there, same with getting a new crest or silk skill

A lot of the side content in this game is so unfun it makes me wonder why even bother. Deep deep docks? Fucking cringe. Bilewater and putrid ducts? Fucking cringe. Mount fay and Sands of Karak? Fucking cringe. The one and only thing fun thing I've found off the intended progression path thus far is First Sinner. Everything else has been complete fucking dogshit. They really delayed the game for 4 years to fill it with the worst nonsense they could think of

Ending spoilers.

>Pale king
>Served and built his kingdom for everyone and helped many, using his power to establish a prosperous nation
>When calamity struck in the form of a vengeful god trying to take the minds of the citizens, he makes use of his kin with reckless abandon to try and hope one of them becomes a perfect cage to contain it
>Silk
>Builds a kingdom built on lies, blind servitude, and being run almost akin to a hivemind. Everyone suffers, unless you're at the top of the system and even then, you must devote your very soul to it, and not waver
>Loses all her weavers when they escape, kingdom starts to decay with almost no one helping manage it, sends parties to capture any they find the location of to force their servitude again until their death, delaying the death of the place
>Is perfectly willing to sacrifice the entire thing to try and save her one child, not even born naturally, than to let her die in any capacity

In the end, Hallownest crumbled completely, with the vessel never managing to fully contain it, until the knight puts a real end to Radiance, but Phaloom still has a chance to form a society in the remnants, and maybe maintain some of it's history, especially with Lace having survived, even if she resented her mother. So who truly won in the end?

From a moral perspective who made was the worst though?

Steel Soul mode has an exclusive boss. I think I'm gonna install the no-permadeath mod, I can't do 100% on perma, I have a life

>>538991843
Just pause and exit to menu if you're about to die, or are one hit from death, and try again.

does volt filament stack with pollip pouch?

Volt affects silk skills, pollip tools. So they both work.

Is there stuff you can miss in act 3?

oh I thought boss affected tools
thanks for the clarification

I'm 10 hours into the game so far, and it's fucking easy, are people nowadays retarded?

the knight

Can also copy the save folder and make a back-up occasionally just to be safe. 3 or 4 hearts is the same as 1 heart when a weak or strong enemy knocks you off into a 2-heart hazard.

Silk is easily the worst of the two because the worst thing PK did was mass infantcide, and even then at least PK thought that all the vessels were unthinking void filled biological constructs that couldn't think or feel. (Considering that's what his plan entirely hinged on) And even then I'm sure he didn't feel too good about it because he kept screeching to himself the biggest cope line i've ever heard.
Silk was a tyrant and until the very end she acted purely in her own desires at the expense of her kingdom.
Silk will be seen as the "OwO SO SADGE POOR GRANDMOMMY!!!" by the community because female.
Hallownest got the shittier deal because it's crisis basically wiped out the entire kingdom. Pharloom has at least two major settlements with plenty of pilgrims by the end of the true ending.
Though you could argue that Hallownest's infected went back to normal after Radiance got raped by Lord Of Shades.

Has enough time passed that we can discuss that Act 3 kinda sucks ass compared to 1 and 2?
>>
>>538998315
Equip a fast crest and get him low. Practice dodging the spears in the second phase until you can hold your own for a bit and then either defeat him naturally or blitz him down with tools to finish out the fight.

>>538999905
check next to the bench on the citadel hot spring and the right-side of the dancer's arena

I give up guys, the only other side scroller ive played is the original game, they clearly made this game for long time platformer fans. it takes me multiple attempts just to get past rooms, tried fixing the broken bench in sinners road, i simply cant do it

>Sister Splint in S
She's a fundamentally good boss that was exactly as difficult as she needed to be. I think I have a higher opinion of her because of how I ended up fighting her. I wandered into Shellwood extremely early without sprint or float and too poor to afford a bench, and I beat her first try. It was tense.
>Bell Beast, Skull Tyrant, and Moss Mother in C
I'm not a fan of extremely basic bosses and minibosses that have 2 or 3 attacks with virtually no random variables, but I also don't dislike them. They're exactly what they need to be.
>Groal and Savage Beastfly in B
Groal is a challenging fight and the only thing I dislike about him is that he pops up when he dives into the much, making it inconsistent whether it's safe to pogo him or not. The runback is whatever, I thought it was funny. Savage Beastfly is easily the boss that filtered me the hardest on my first playthrough, but I like him a lot now that I understand his tempo. He's a basic miniboss, but he has that unpredictable, aggressive edge that others like Skull Tyrant, etc. lack.
