Uma Edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3400 units, 1100 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them. It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Sure, but there isn't much use since it's attack is in the gutter and it never gets xp. A burning pearl helps, but if it ever gets limped you're still sitting at a 10 attack that never improves.

Though, if it's smart enough to cast it in combat, it can fist the ever loving shit out of things with alt1's Iron Fist spell for obscene damage. Love the idea of someone trying to rush Machaka early thinking it's an easy kill only for their giants to get one tapped every turn by the fist of the north star.
Or maybe go for sheer number of attacks hoping one lands via gloves of the gladiator or something (they do almost 50 damage a hit)

Leave a few troops in a place and pray, mostly.
Items are random, you'll occasionally be able to buy one or find one on a random unit. The guildmaster's adventurers often spawn with items, but you can't control them or take them away from them, unfortunately.

Pretty much. Trying to hold onto anything not near your existing forces, or near somewhere that spawns undead/demons/deer is suffering, and you kinda just gotta march back on over there.
I tend to leave a token force at valuable mines and such if I can.

Certain classes get freespawn and prefer certain resources over others. Dwarves and Kobolds only care about greater mines, and should only bother with towns and cities if they're close to said mines. Dryad and Druids love ancient forests, which for most other classes are the biggest source of rampaging deer. Troll king can eventually capture ancient forests and start freespawning some mindless units, thus annoying everyone else. Or if you really hate nature, play scourge lord and eventually the whole world will be a giant desert. Not all classes are made equal, and half the fun is discovering what cool thing your dudes can do.

I like guildmaster because my favourite part in RTS is always to build my empire, so Guildmaster is exactly my jam, roleplay and gameplay wise.

It's another 'my long line of infantry all clumped at the top right allowing a couple indies to slip back and kill the mage' episode.

but Divinitus would greatly help early age humans compete with all the crazy heavy armor and cavalry spam of later ages.
Plus I think its just a fun mod to throw in, since it makes a lot of chassi more special (except Sacred Tiger of the West and Solar Disk who still suck and Demon Macaw gets nerfed to buff all American nations)

The new chassis in Div seem to be the most broken, like holy shit Lord of floods is the most brainless expander ever, give him hard skin and he can faceroll everything. he also lets you tank misfortune and not even suffer that much.
as far as existing chassis who got a nice buff, i love the cerberus chassis in divinitus, that random tartarian spawn happens way more often than you think it would.

I feel like its balanced a bit too much in the roguelike direction in that way. The game feels like its wasting your time in the early game because you have to defend your home from ants and deer untill you have some semblence of defenders.

it's a strategy rogueliuke so RNG is much more of a factor. You just do a run and see how well you can do with what you are given. get the AI Suicide Prevention mod to keep[ half your comps from dying out randomly to stray goats. Try mods too, the C'tis mod is pretty good.

Pretty much as soon as expansion was over I started a war with Therodos and poured all my resources into that. I thought I got a good start, but couldn't pin down his bronze colossus tendie. Eventually he completely outplayed me by teleporting it onto an army I meant to push back a horde of ghosts. I lost my cap, god, and pretty much all of my forces, and at that point went AI.

I just had my mages on "Cast Spells", which isprobably why they did nothing. Then again, that last army was set up to clear several hundred ghosts and not just one big guy, so when the big guy teleported in all my melee guys ran forward and the mages sat out of range to do anything useful.

Definitely mistakes made on my part, hopefully fewer mistakes in the next game

when i came up with my bronze colossus build i was testing how weak he is to earth mages casting shatter or how many earth mages it takes to kill him with phoenix pyre and max reinvigoration.
and i noticed that the earth mages dont cast shatter consistently for some reason, even when you script them to cast it five times. they cast other spells. i tested it with the improved spellcasting ai mod and it made no difference.
thats one of the reasons why i use the bronze colossus and not the telkhine god-king.

did he have two main gauches of parrying and bracers of protection, or something?
eyecatcher and boots of quickness and burning pearl, together with thaum2 f2 battle fury, would have helped. and then a lot of chaff to harrass the defense down. just a single hit from the eyecatcher causes an eye loss and tips the scales in your favor to get another hit, and a blind colossus would have a massive -9 penalty to attack, defense and precision. and inanimates can be a bit difficult to heal in dom6, i think. while smashers are great, one hit is not generally sufficient. with eyecatcher, one hit will typically lead to many more from everyone, and make it harder for the target to fight back

Yes to both.
You can burn an extra gem to cast one level higher than normal. However it also costs more fatigue. A lot of gem costing spells you don't have to spam outside of stuff like living X/nature bug spells since most gem stuff is just battlefield enchants you need only one caster to cast.

I rarely bother with indies unless they're filling a niche I don't have. So mostly heavy cavalry or the rarer ones. Light infantry or militia are nice for patrolling.
Indie heavy infantry is just so pointless. Too slow to raise to help in a really desperate situation. Too much of a gold waste if I'm just building army - might as well just build another fort to recruit more troops from.

I don't remember the exact mechanics but I do remember thinking that at some point and giving it a try, and holy shit do your mages go down faster without.
Essentially, being older does increase your chances of catching shit, but actual age is just one of the factors. The longer you have the old aged trait, the worse your chances get every additional year you survive.
I might also recall wrong, but doesn't that trait also make units retroactively age slower? So they spawn younger than the recruiting panel says, possibly even young enough not to be old aged.
Really not sure if any of this is correct, but I do know I did regret the fuck out of it when I didn't take it. Old geezers dropping left and right like seagull shit after a hearty dose of laxative infused popcorn

Flames from the sky, level 9 evo. The fire throne let me recruit fire 3 mages. One death empowerment and I could make the flame helmet and the skull of fire to start blasting. Magic variety was a pretty big problem for a while. Ulm was a godsend and forged me a bunch of charcoal shields before I picked up magi from a site in Miclan's territory.

Didn't really feel like I had a real shot at winning the game until the global board was monopolized by me. The throne on the island in the ocean was only worth 1 point so I still needed 5 more thrones to win. That time the globals got wiped was a blessing in disguise. With Agartha's stuff out of the way I was open to cast arcane decree and really lock it down without needing to dispell stuff first. Why did Agartha go ai anyway?

Eventually decided to attack Xib because I needed the throne, they were in conflict with Man and to get rid of the only person who could contest me underwater. The cap battle was very rewarding, enslaving a bunch of high earth/death mages.

Lol at the point there are more squids than skeletons. Brave skeletons though, saw the coming of God and tried in earnest to stop it. Luckily there was a construction discount site for mass producing golems. Looking through the artifact list showed the mobile dome that I assumed did a lot of work. Never showed any messages if it did anything. Mari did some half hearted stuff and only started fighting for real when I retaliated. And to be honest they were pretty scary. Before they gave up there were a couple seraphs running around that were unstoppable.

Actually getting my armies to where they needed to be to win the game was a slog. Most of the time wasted just getting around. To the point that I see this game more lost by Marignon than won by me. Mari had 3 thrones and was pretty much adjacent to the last 2 but never made a move. Despite finishing research quickly. Even if I saw the winning attempt there was no way for me to deny one of their thrones before they won. At least that's how I saw it.

The classic "you need your mages for research, you need your mages for fighting, you barely have mages" problem really bit me hard here. I really had aimed for an early victory, counting on everyone else playing for the late game, but Pythium held out a lot better than expected, Mictlan attacked me, and Xibalba had a doomstack sitting at my border "to fight Man", but well, gotta leave a force there. I could handle it but I just didn't have the skellypower to finish either war quickly, and dedicating mages to battle was right out. I only managed to get one path to 9, not long before the end of the game...
So when all the squids started flowing in, I found myself without much I could do at all. Throwing hordes around also wouldn't bring much, since squid stacks are excellent at snipping the commanders.
I tried to pivot to tartarians and a couple other big spells, but you also managed to Wish my pretender death twice right at the worst possible moment, which slowed me down a lot.
All in all a massive failure all over the place.

I actually won a max research speed game with MA Ermor like a decade ago because everyone trusted friendly trader Ermor and got me swimming in literally thousands of gems in exchange for all kinds of shit, information, protection money, etc. and no one could take down my third Utterdark at 700 gems overcast, but this time I failed horribly.

CoE is nothing like Dominions. CoE is closer to a rougelike and Dominions is a 4X.

If you are interested in the multiplayer at all you gotta get 6, and to be honest the game is by far at its best in multiplayer.
It's perfectly fine to play 4 by yourself if you are just deciding whether to get into it or not though if you have it already or its going for very cheap. Each new game is pretty much the same at its core, newer versions just get new toys to play with, QoL updates, engine revisions and stuff.
Mechanically there is very little overlap between Dom and CoE, but you will see loads of the same assets and lore concepts between the two

Everybody gets bodied at first, but its worth it.
Only 1 person can win and long term games usually have 9+ people, there is no shame in losing. You will learn extremely quick from every loss too.
The only thing you need to be able to do to join a mp game without humiliating yourself is to be good enough with your nation to get approx 15 provinces in the first year of the game, and thats a pretty easy task for most nations, especially if you take a strong monster god to expand with or a big bless.
This place is always looking for an excuse to look smart so asking noob questions is encouraged too.

The moose has at least 38 HP and 23 prot, maybe more HP if it's better than a regular moose.
With Larger (or just casting Enlarge on himself for a gem) and +1 HP bless it's 51 HP, and with one N gem the rider and mount both get 10% regen. Barkskin raises the moose's prot to 26.
That's the same stat profile as an Ashdod Adon with a regen bless and personal ironskin cast on himself, just for the mount.

Expansion went fairly well for me. At least until my pretender jobbed to a province with like 40 heavy infantry that refused to rout. I thought one of my neighbors would take the opportunity to attack me while my pretender was dead and my bless was offline, but no one did. I don't know whether no one saw it or just didn't care.

I needed to call him back so I built temples in a couple mountain provinces and started recruiting priests. I started next to Lemuria so I figured I would need the priests later anyway.

After calling back my pretender it was time to go ghost busting. Ragha joined in on the fight against Lemuria and together we managed to banish the spooks. Fire weapons bless and solar rays did some impressive work against them. I had some limited success using ninjas with cheap magic weapons to assassinate some of Lemuria's commanders too.

Across the map I think Feminine was fighting Atlantis and R'lyeh, TC fought Vaettiheim, and Man and Ulm had some sort of spat.

The war with Lemuria left me completely broke. I had gained several forts, but didn't have the gold to recruit from them. Getting Lemuria's cap gave me a nice bit of death income at least.

Around this time, I lost a province to a vampire event. I sent my pretender who was decently geared to take it back. He got crit by a vampire, started bleeding, and bled out after the most of vampires had routed. I had so many priests leftover from the war with Lemuria so it wasn't that big of a deal and I managed to call him back in about 2 turns. I did lose a bunch of items including the Shield of the Dawn I had won in the arena which stung a bit. He did redeem himself later by taking a throne by himself after being appropriately geared.

I had been so focused on fighting Lemuria that I neglected site searching and had pretty sad gem income early on. I got the Atlas of Creation after winning one of the arenas which was great both for the site searching and for boosting paths I already had.

TC had beaten Vaettiheim and contacted me about fighting R'lyeh together. I didn't know what to make of this. Why would TC want to fight R'lyeh? Thinking it was some kind of ruse I absentmindedly agreed. Then to my surprise TC actually did attack R'lyeh. I started summoning kappas and forging water breathing items, but quickly realized I didn't have the resources to contest R'lyeh in the water. TC was becoming impatient at my lack of action against the squids and it became clear war with TC was imminent.

War with TC began the turn after I informed him I wouldn't be fighting R'lyeh. The invasion began with golems and cavalry raiding into my territory. Luckily for me Agartha was already fighting TC so at least I wasn't alone. While I was able to repel TCs raids with earth mages and dai oni, I was suffering quite a bit of attrition. My armies that were marching towards TCs territory were being whittled down by wind of death attacks and ritual magic. There was one particular battle were I lost two dai oni because I didn't realize that if a battle goes on too long it reaches twilight which dispels buffs and they got crushed by a bunch of awakened trees.

While TC was slowly being pushed back he still had a bunch of globals up feeding him gems as well as GoH.

Then TC had to go AI for personal reasons and his territory was divided up between me, Agartha, Man, and Atlantis.

At this point I started amassing tengu as I had very good air and nature income and had been trading glamour gems to Feminine for even more. The tengu ended up being pretty nice especially with the +4 attack I got from one of the thrones I claimed. I summoned a couple of the elemental queens of water and air and prepared for whatever was going to happen next. Oh and Ragha ate Piconye.

After AI TC was mostly mopped up Man went AI. So I grabbed as much of Man's territory as I could. I managed to get both of Man's thrones and only needed a few more to end the game.

At this point I had Well of Misery and GoH up and was using my pretender to summon tarts. I felt like I was in a pretty strong position.

I only needed two more thrones to end the game. There was an unclaimed throne in Ragha's territory which I managed to take by magic phasing a bunch of tarts, wights, and a fairy queen into the province.

I ended up pushing R'lyeh off of TCs final throne and taking it with a horde of tengu, ryujin, and whatever else I had in the area.

Agartha didn't want to fight a late game war with me and instead wanted a duel between our pretenders. My pretender predictably jobs one final time attaining maximum deathpower. The final throne is claimed and the game ends.

Ryujin seem pretty nice. I didn't get a chance to do that much with them as I didn't manage to get underwater until pretty late in the game.

The underwater portions of the map were mostly separated into two disconnected lakes. R'lyeh started in one of them. At that point I believe TC owned the other lake so I had no UW forts.

So in a way, Ind has the worst H3s in the game, because only one can become H4 and you'd rather wait for the Archbishop to make him a H5.
Ind's H3s are only useful for Smite and Banish Spam, but the Basalt Queen actually fulfills the role of a traditional H3, while also being an excelent general and capable of eating any would be assassins

Pro tip for people taking Death Explosion in Vanilla: If you go dormant you can keep the DE secret from your neighbors and also enjoy your sacreds not blowing up when they die for 12-15 turns, Having run it both ways many times I prefer going Dormant for the extra points and early game convenience.

Dominions Nexus is the most populated but also by far the faggiest. Would not recommend.
