When there's the question of who would try to revive Rudy or stop him from dying by making a dark world, the obvious answer is Noelle. Which makes sense, his (near-)death would badly affect her and if she knew there was a chance that opening a fountain would bring him back, she'd do it.But what if the Knight "revived" him after Noelle's attempt? I see it like Noelle being in a bad state mentally after getting the news, and combined with whatever led to her knowing dark worlds are real, leading to a Rudy who isn't second sanctuary Gerson levels of off, but still off, even worse if he is partially alive but suffering through the darkness (Noelle's subconscious) that keeps him alive. Eventually that fountain is sealed, but it doesn't feel like Rudy is at peace. Maybe he didn't get the chance to tell Noelle something important before dozing off, or he is still stubbornly hanging on by a thread.In comes the Knight, someone more experienced in making dark worlds and "reviving" people. Even though they either don't know Rudy or haven't seen him in years, it makes a fountain that allows Noelle and Rudy to have one final conversation....and then when the fountain is sealed, Rudy wakes up and it becomes clear that the thing keeping him alive is the darkness that's beginning to greatly affect the light world, the barrier between worlds thinning from all the fountains being opened. Cue Chapter 5 late-game/epilogue that ends with a shot of the bunker and school fountains piercing the light world sky.
