I'm replaying Shadow of Chernobyl and am genuinely surprised how well-done faction dynamics and identity are, compared to Stalker 2. What the fuck happened? I vividly remember the concept art & design docs S2 having distinct visual designs for the factions, where there was a "scale" of haw lawless or law-abiding certain factions were. It's like none of this made its way into retail.

yeah, the concepts have changed. desu i think that there are too many factions in stalker 2. the corps are redundant, spark doesn't feel natural, duty could as well not exist anymore... and nu-gsc wanted to introduce even more, and perhaps will in the dlcs. this whole factionsauce seem artificial, soc really did it the best, where duty and freedom were just groups consisting of like, 50 people each, and the only proper faction that had actual power was the monolith. all the rest were unaffiliated loners, gangs of bandits, isolated squads of mercs, and the government forces and scientists.

It could be politicized, same with the military being pulled out and replaced by the "UN". There was already a political subtext attached to this. One of Ukraine's top selling, top noticed games. Russians were paying people to review bomb the game on release. It's as much another part of their war as anything else. That's why GSC removed the Soviet icons, (lion, CNPP, propaganda posters, etc) despite wanting to show a Zone "untouched by time". But think about it: Duty being the heavy militaristic faction, and Freedom being the cool, freedom fighter guys. Too black and white.

In bringing back 99% of characters and making like 10 of them have their own factions, they really ruined S2 with their nostalgiabait.

What about the ideals of said factions? What the fuck are Degytarev's forces for? Just to block off the city? Why need a separate faction? Loners aren't a faction, just separate stalker groups. Have them be loners.

I knew Stalker 2 was doomed the second i found out it was coming to consoles. There has never been a better indicator that a game would be enshittified, doubly so when previous titles had only been on PC.
Forget the abysmal hardware requirements, optimization, bugs and whatnot else, at a fundamental level the game is just shit.
It's as if 2 was made by someone who had played SOC once it first came out and then tried to make a game like it from memory + adjustment for the modern audience.

I've put a few hours into R3 but got annoyed at the annoying microstutter. It seems to happen almost every time you run far enough to spawn/despawn things. Does vanilla SoC have this issue? Finished Spatial Anomaly recently, breddy good all around, even if it is more like a stalker-themed quest than a full stalker game.
Now I am trying to play through CS because I never did, but put arsenal overhaul on it because it would be insufferable for me otherwise. They really fucked up the guns in that one despite shooting being 90% of the game.

Duty definitely had a bunch of cut content, but otherwise it's just the passage of time. Freedom took over the bar, the barrier doesn't exist anymore so there's nothing to defend there, and they're just the bar guys. Duty got cucked hard, first by the details of the founding being discovered in COP and then by Ward stealing their jobs, so they're just fucking about in the concrete factory that used to be near Jupiter before Jupiter moved away.
Time passed, even the zone moves on. It makes sense when you consider what's happened elsewhere. Like how the ecologists split up and now you've got SIRCAA, Malachite, and ostensibly Spark before "Scar" turned them into ecoterrorists. Nothing stays the same forever.

Also So far there have been 2 weapons added, performance is better, the AI is better but not full on A-Life, mutant HP got nerfed so they are not as spongy, some weapons and armors got buffed and repair prices ogt nerfed a it and artifacts got rebalanced as well. Engine update is coming at the end of this year or at the most early 2026 apparently.
Honestly the game has been getting constant updates that better the game. Yeah they basically launched a game on early access but they have been working on it and getting it there.

well yes and no. Stalker not replicating real life is good. The zone in stalker always had levels inspired by Kyiv and other places outside of the real life zone. If you really look at SoC, then you'll actually see that it was very loose but quite soulful. It also had the Alcântara Space Center, which is in fucking Brazil of all places, edited into the map (north west of the CNPP), iirc. CoP only really set the trend with trying to be closer to the real life thing

The Encyclopaedia tab had a "folklore" section with a bunch of local stories. They were initially supposed to be told by NPCs at campfires, you can even find recorded audio for them in the game files. Unfortunately, that feature never made it into the release version, but you can still read them in your PDA. I think, you get them when looting bodies, similarly to stash info.

I did follow the wiki somewhat, tried to do parts of the game blind and left dark valley at least once mid quest which may have bugged something in the first place. They never gave me the 40k payment option, bandits never shot Ivanhoe (I did, repeatedly) and now the pacifist bridge has been burnt and every bandit has been shot dead.

From here on out I'll stop trying to go for some pretty completionist playthrough, if something breaks I'll just shoot it and move on.

Unreal is easier to use since new developers are familiar with it. If GSC used XRay, they'd have to train every newbie (95%) on how to use the engine first. Not to mention, XRay 2.0 was never fully finished. On top of teaching how to use it, it had to be finished too, since S2 2011 never came out...

Can it into giant seamless worlds, though? Even Exodus had fairly big, but still pretty limited CoP-style maps that you moved between using the train. The game world being a single huge map with no level transitions was a big marketing point for Stalker 2 and an idea they initially tried to implement in SoC, but had to ditch at some point. And X-Ray is known to perform very poorly on such big maps.

These places were a big thing in the original games, if anything they're the most atmospheric and spooky of all yet we just fly past them at best.

Hey /sg/, I'm kinda bored so I decided to try and code a lightweight simulation system (offline A-life if you will). Who knows, maybe one day the tools are there and I'll be able to squeeze it into S2.

Think of the system as a grid - the one in the picture is 40x24, but that's just for reference. The real system would require a roughly 800x500 grid to split the Zone into 10 meter squares. Squads spawn on the grid and can move, idle, fight other squads and loot bodies. They also gain exp as they survive and rank up. Higher ranks = higher chances of survival in combat.

What else do you think should exist in such a system? When you think about a hypothetical A-Life 2.0 - what do you expect it to do?

It still doesn't break immersion, if you follow the story it will make a lot of sense for the action and intensity to ramp up. You got people trying to figure out a way past the brain scorcher, monolith resurgence at the army warehouses, military planning to reinvade the power plant and all of that happening right after CS ended which was a shitshow at the NPP
Once you turn the schorcher off it makes perfect sense for shit to go down and you'll use the chaos as cover to infiltrate the sarcophagus.
The only thing I kinda disliked is that you turn out to be the unique hero character that solves everything and becomes a legend. They should have made strelok die at the power plant and not uncover the entire zone secret

I feel that it's relatively easy for FPS games which exclusively focus on the 'shooter' part to age well. Even CoD2 plays very well in 2025. Once you've got the shooting mechanics and the campaign for them done well, the only potential cutoff point becomes the graphics.
