Per a contract and some mumbo jumbo, the other 12 all are bound to Dante, and he can revive them if they die, but he feels the pain they felt, and they all became much weaker as cost. The bus goes around getting Golden Boughs, little branches with exceptional powers that resonate with each of the sinners, but to get them they usually have to face their inner conflict and traumas from their past. We have Vergilius guiding us, a giganigga, and Charon, the bus driver. The alt word stuff is using mirror worlds, something Yi Sang worked on, but basically people we've seen and walpurgis being some special case, we can use theoretical versions of the sinners as them for periods of time to help in combat. It's all canon.
